If a mithral breastplate is considered light armor, does this mean its base speed is 30 and not 20?

Liberty's Edge

Yes.

Dark Archive

Remember that if you don't have medium armour proficiency, you will still take a -1 penalty to all attacks and skill checks.

Of course, that's what the Armour Expert trait is for.

Mastwork armor reduces the ACP by 1. Mitheral reduces the ACP by 3. Mitheral Breastplate has ACP of 4.

Now here's my question. All mitheral armors are masterwork armors and the 150 gp cost is included in the price. So does mitheral reduce the ACP by 2 but because it's masterwork by default that number is 3 or would mitheral reduce it by 3 and you apply the master work reduction as well.

We've always played that mitheral provides -3 and Master a -4 so you have ACP of 0. Oddly enough I never thought about being no proficient and having ACP 0. So it make me wonder if we have been doing this wrong since the start.

Mithral is always masterwork and it's ACP reduction is baked in with the masterwork reduction.

At least, that's what I've been going with.

Liberty's Edge

Mithral reduces it by 3. That's all. Think of it as overlapping the masterwork bonus.

Mithral weapons and armor are always masterwork so the -1 because of masterwork quality is included in the -3 for being mithral.

As everyone else has said. If you want confirmation, here is a link to mithral full plate of speed from the Core Rulebook. Normal full plate has an AC penalty of -6, masterwork full plate has an AC penalty of -5, and this item made of mithral has an AC penalty of -3.

They should put that a little more clear under Mitheral Armor as it's something we just didn't even consider until I saw this thread. As it's left for you to assume since only the price is said to be rolled in. Having to check the magic item section to see example that show that the MW ACP reduction is rolled in not something I'd think to check.

This thread just go me thinking that if you weren't proficient you wouldn't need to with the mitheral breast plate and that just seem wrong. Of course it seems no one in our games ever takes the mitheral breast plate with out being proficient so we never noticed. We just played it as ACP 0 for skills thought that was great.

The Exchange

No special material counts the masterwork reduction. The link is probably an error in core.

A penalty that big to the other materials would have been spelled out.

Mithral even says it can reduce to 0. Look at adamantine, it says it better.

Take this into account: Assume you have a Masterwork blade, this blade gains a +1 to hit, then you add the magic effect to it, does that blade gain a +2? no it remains as a +1 to hit regardless. there are several aspects that overwrite previous bonuses, no big deal :)
