Really Frustrating Moderator Habits

Website Feedback

Seriously.

Is there some reason you (moderator-types) can't simply delete the offending threads entirely?

Because nothing (and I do mean nothing) on these boards is as irritating as hopping on to a thread only to find half of it removed and the thread locked.

Can't see WHY the thread is locked, since those posts are removed.
Can't respond to anything LEFT in the thread, because it's locked.

Don't see why I should have to deal with half-deleted, locked threads.

Just remove THE WHOLE THING, huh?

Don't read them?

There are several reasons.

For instance, we like to leave notes when we intervene in a thread, to make it clear what happened and why, and that can't be done when a thread is vanished entirely. It is more helpful if people see that something got out of control than to have it appear that nothing happened in the first place.

Also, even in threads that are largely uncivil, there are some posts with something useful to say, and these deserve to continue to exist. Even if it is impossible to reply directly, they are present in search results and in their user's post histories.

Despite the threads being locked they sometimes contain useful information. Having all of that information unavailable because people lost their tempers does not help anyone.

Keep the thread on the boards allows the conversation to be mined later for use in games, and it shows an example of what not to do.

edit:Changed temples to tempers. lol

Maybe if they were bigger and stood out more they wouldn't lose them so easily. ;P

It would probably help the OP's problem if there was a clear indication that the thread was locked before he clicked on it in the first place, perhaps a symbol of some sort?

This is a good idea. I don't notice they are locked until I decide to reply, and it is annoying when that happens.

If that change is made and if it's easy, I'd appreciate it if one's dot also remained when a thread was locked.

Hmm, a little Padlock at the start and/or end of the thread title would do the trick. That seems to be the standard symbol on other forums anyway.

I'd love to have an indicator that a thread was locked. I'd also like the thread's locking to not affect the "XX new" post count. Several times I've gone "I wonder what happened to that thread?" only to find another page or two of posts, followed by a locking post.

I removed a vulgar post. Be civil people.

I'd like a visible notation on the thread title, so I can avoid the exasperation of opening it, getting involved in the discussion, and then running into the "this thread is locked" message at the end of the thread.

Even a color shift on the title would do it. It doesn't have to be exotic or flashy. Just THERE.

Some of us reskin the colors of the forums so that we don't blind ourselves staring at a white screen in a dimly lit room. I'd much prefer an icon or text label to a color shift that I'll never see.

Silver Crusade

I await the day when one of our mods completely loses their @#$% and starts announcing that they've removed offensive faces and goes on a banhammer run.

PMG does indeed have an actual, physical banhammer. I've seen the pics....

How do I color shift?

You hold your breath for a really long time.

I also want to change the color. White screens awste mor energy, darker colors are more nature friendly.

So, can anybody anwer kelsey´s question?

For those curious how to do this, there are add-ons or apps or whatever that can adjust the actual colors displayed. However, many systems have a setting in their preferences to adjust colors/hue/saturation (this will help if you find white to be a bit too blinding). For Macs, it's under System Preferences -> Displays -> Color. For Windows machines you can adjust this through the Control Panel in Display Properties. Additionally, if you're in a dimly lit room, there's generally a button or control (sometimes it's on the keyboard) to adjust the brightness.

The effects of background color being more energy efficient are negligible. It's more effective to adjust your brightness/display settings.

In Firefox, from the menubar under Tools, select Options. From the Options dialogue box, under the Content menu, select the Colors button to specify a standard background color for all webpages. Be sure to uncheck the "Allow pages to use their own colors..." option.

In Opera, you can opt to use a specific CSS stylesheet for select websites.

(I don't run Chrome, and I never open IE.)

Re-Skinning Color: I use an extension for Chrome/Firefox called Stylish. I keep the settings for this in the Tools category of my wiki in case you ever need it. (I also keep links to such things in my profile.)

Note, if you go straight to Paizo.com you won't see a change. It's only after you enter the store, forums, campaigns, etc. that it will take place. I'd love to just have it do everything at paizo.com, but that ends up botching the PRD. (If someone can figure out a better workaround for that, please let me know.)

Enjoy!
