Weapon proficiency and Hand of the apprentice

Rules Questions

So we are abort to start a new pathfinder group and I’m the wizard and one of the thing I have been looking at is in my schools (universalist) powers is “Hand of the apprentice” and I have a question about it.

Do I need to have the weapon proficiency to use a another weapon then the once I gain as I make my character or can I have say a long sword that he carries around that’s a heirloom from his grandfather?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but if you're not proficient with a weapon you take -4 to hit. That's all, you can still use it. (Wouldn't recommend using it though, -4 to hit is REALLY bad.)

Non-english speaker?

Yes, English is not my native language.

Il try to elaborate a bit, I’m working on my char and hade this idea about him having a weapon that he was given by his grandfather that he carries and I didn’t want to do the stereo type old Gandalf wizard with a staff.

So I was thinking about having him carry sword instead and even if he was not able to use it in a strait up fight, and after looking over the power I was thinking that I could use it on the sword.
It doesn’t say anything about what weapon I can use for it.

I’m not sure if its allowed to post text out of the main book but here goes.

You cause your melee weapon to fly from your grasp and strike a foe before instantly returning to you. As a standard action, you can make a single attack using a melee weapon at a range of 30 feet. This attack is treated as a ranged attack with a thrown weapon, except that you add your Intelligence modifier on the attack roll instead of your Dexterity modifier (damage still relies onStrength). This ability cannot be used to perform a combat maneuver. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Intelligence modifier.

You can use any melee or thrown weapon. If you are not proficient with the weapon, you will suffer a -4 penalty. I suggest using a simple weapon. What is your character's race?

I’m going to be a human.

You could take a feat to be proficient with your weapon of choice, or take the Heirloom Weapon trait. I suggest the Aklys, as it is easy to retrieve.

Hand of the Apprentice automatically returns the weapon: "You cause your melee weapon to fly from your grasp and strike a foe before instantly returning to you."

Even with proficiency with a sword, would there be a -4 on the attack for using a weapon that doesn't have a range given? Or does the ability eliminate that?

"This attack is treated as a ranged attack with a thrown weapon..." seems to imply that you'll get a -4 unless the weapon has a throwing range.

Also, what about two-handed weapons? Normally they require a full-round action to be thrown. Can a universalist take a feat for proficiency with a Lucerne Hammer and start tossing it around as a standard action? If so, that might make up for a missing spell slot at low levels! :D

Hand of the Apprentice (Su)

EWP has a BAB prereq of +1. a wizard cant take it til 3rd level.

half-orc could fling falchions.

looks like you can use 2 handed weapons. look at the trait Heirloom weapon for early level good weapon options
