Sherlock Holmes type character

Advice

I want to make a Sherlock Holmes type character, but would like to base Perception off Intelligence instead of Wisdom. Any suggestions?

The super genius games Investigator with the Great Detective Archetype is pretty much tailor made to be sherlock holmes and is Int based.

Holmes' perceptions were a combination of wisdom and intelligence.

Wisdom - In Pathfiner is more common sense than anything else. Holmes was just always observant, even when not on a case, because that was his nature.

Intelligence - When looking for clues, Holmes was more interested in what didn't belong. I don't know if there's a trait or a feat for it, but explain to your GM what you want to do and he might be willing to work on homebrewing with you. To be Holmesian, it would be sometihng to the effect of take a knowledge check to see if you can add a bonus to your perception check. To be truly Holmesian the specific knowledge check would depend on the situation making you take ranks in multiple knowledge sets. Holmes spotted things out of the ordinary because he studied a lot of different things.

Anyway to do this without 3rd party materials? I'm not concerned with the character class, just a way to base perception and maybe sense motive off Intelligence instead of Wisdom.

Not that I am aware of, is there a particular reason you dont want to use any 3rd party material?

No, there is not. Holmes would have both a high Wisdom and Intelligence, so there's the rub.

I know there's a trait that allows you to use your WIS for a single non-WIS skill, might want to ask your GM if you can replace WIS for INT.

Often I've heard that STR can replace CHA for intimidate checks as just a fair swap. I side with Jodokai above.

If you have read Sherlock Holmes, than you can see why we say it's wisdom and not intelligence for his perception. Observation has nothing to do with intellect. Even people who are considered sometimes to have some mental health issues, which can hinder their intellect, can still have amazing observation skills and awareness.

Holmes has a high intellect to be used to gather all the clues he observed and make an assessment on ask of thugs as to who the culprit is. His intelligence let's him use what he knows, has seen, to make his amazing predictions.

His wisdom, allows him to know what to look out for, from past experiences, too new insights he gathers from people. Ask of this is stored in his head til he uses his great intellect to figure out what they all have you do with one another.

Inquisitor is Sherlock Holmes. Just give it some int.

It gets Monster Lore.
Monster Lore (Ex): The inquisitor adds her Wisdom
modifier on Knowledge skill checks in addition to her
Intelligence modifier, when making skill checks to
identify the abilities and weaknesses of creatures.

Inquisitor with some int or Bard (with some int).

As for base Perception off Intelligence instead of Wisdom.
Go for Inquisitor and just role play it.

I should have added earlier, most lead fictional characters start out at level 5 or higher. If basing a Pathfinder character on a fictional character you've got to think in terms of how your character will be after they've leveled up a few times. You will never convincingly duplicate a leading fictional character at level 1 unless you're a big fan of Dumb and Dumber.

A bard or some sort of rogue, don't they get an investigator archetype? That might work. Just make sure his Charisma is terrible...didn't Holmes have a lot of trouble with people and social aspects?

Holmes had issues with people of they didn't interest him. He was a bored genius, so he would have issues with people socially because he would seem either blunt, eccentric, bored, rude, awkward most of the time. Only Watson was able to Dr through some of this, which us why Sherlock sometimes kept him around, because Watson knew Holme's M.O. And knew his method of madness.

If you have ever watched HOUSE, the TV series (last season, noooo!!!), then you can see exactly how Holmes would act in different situations. Also the TV shows from bbc our other stations show Holmes being how he is. But I think house gives better example because there is more to draw from 176 episodes, than there is to get from one out a few tv specials.

Either way, the detective archetype, our investigator as mentioned would be perfect for you.

Just make sure high int. and a decently good wisdom, at least a 14.

As Kolokotroni above said, the Super Genius Games Investigator is a great place to start. What I did for my version, was started with a halfling rogue, investigator archetype and then subbed in Investigator abilities for rogue talents, which worked out great! Took Skill: Focus Perception early on, and Crime Scene Analysis and Expert (Investigator Talents), among other rogue talents and investigator abilities, as I leveled up. One of my favorite characters.
Hope it helps.

Inquisitor or alchemist is very fitting. Don't forget your cocaine habit though.

Liberty's Edge

A Great Investigator is very doable as a Bard. Look at the Detective and possibly Archivist Archetypes. He'll likely be a bit more charming than Holmes...but that's not inherently bad.

Inquisitor, as mentioned, can also do this really well. They are built to investigate things after all.

You could also build this with several other character classes (Oracle of Lore, Diviner Wizard or Alchemist with Cosmopolitan to get Perception and Sense Motive as class skills, Lore Warden Fighter with the same, etc.) The key is to max out Perception and Sense Motive, along with a lot of Knowledge skills and (ideally) some Survival for tracking. It requires really high Int and at least decent Wisdom, too.

And if you want to do it fully don't neglect the disguise aspects of Holmes. Perhaps a rogue or a bard with perform (acting) and also perform (violin)?

As an Inquisitor, you will get to use your wisdom for just about everything. This will allow you to do what you want, without suffering MAD, or flavor.

Gnome Detective Bards named Sherlock Gnomes amuse me greatly. Show Yourselves! power might be the single most amusing class ability in the game. It also gains half its level as a bonus to sense motive, among other skills.
