+1 per four caster levels (maximum +5)

This came up in this weeks game session,

Greater Magic Weapon +1 per four caster levels (maximum +5)

I have always taken this as; at 1st level you are +1, 5th +2, 9th +3 etc.

DM took it to mean caster level/4 round down. so levels 1-7 +1, 8-11 +2, 12-15 +3 etc.

Thoughts? Is there a ruling in the books that I missed?

You divide the caster level by 4 to determine what bonus the weapon gets so you are correct.

edit:I misread your GM's interpretation as your interpretation. The GM is correct.

As I understand it, your GM is correct. The spell grants a +1 bonus for every four (complete) levels you have.

Divide caster level by 4, everything always rounds down, DM's right. Although I'd say at caster level 1-3 the bonus is actually 0, as the spell doesn't specify a minimum.

Your way would be written as +1, increases +1 for every additional 4 levels.

Crazy, have been doing that wrong all of 3rd edition and onward.

False... The Spell(Greater Magic Weapon) specifically states that the spell works exactly like Magic Weapon Spell(which always grants a +1 Enhancement Bonus of +1)..

Also.. It is impossible to have this spell at Caster Level 1... since Greater Magic Weapon is either a 3rd or 4th level spell

3rd Level Wizard/Sorcerer Spell (CL 5/6)
4th Level Cleric Spell (CL 7th
3rd level Paladin Spell (CL 10)

CL=Caster Level.. Only Paladins with high CHR can cast 3rd level Spells at 10th Level

I believe the Gm was correct...even though levels 3-7 do not give more enhancement bonuses... the Greater Magic Weapon Spell lasts 1 hour per level... instead of minute per level compared to the first level version.

Only place CL 1-3 would come up would be as a SLA for a critter that functions at its HD.
But I missed that, so GM was even more right, +1 for 1-7. Thanks for correction.

Thats correct!.. I knew there was a way for Greater Weapon Spell to be lower level..(but not for PCs) I forgot about Sla's Thanks..

Also sorry for posting "FALSE" in the beginning of my first post.. re-reading it makes me sound like Sheldon from Bing Bang Theory (which I'm far from not).. should of been "incorrect"

Dark Archive

I don't really buy this thread's interpretation that you only get the +5 at level 20... it would make much more sense that you'd get +5 at levels 17-20. Some of these spells suffer from legacy wording disorder methinks...

Silver Crusade

Yay for Necroes!

Since it doesn't have a Minimum I've always read and played it as 1-7 +1, 8-11 +2, 12-15 +3, 16-19 +4, 20 +5

Rounding: Occasionally the rules ask you to round a result or value. Unless otherwise stated, always round down. For example, if you are asked to take half of 7, the result would be 3.

The spell grants +1 per four caster levels so you divide the Caster Level by four and then round down. That makes the progression…

Caster Level: Bonus
1-3: +0
4-7: +1
8-11: +2
12-15: +3
16-19: +4
20: +5

Note: Normally 5th level is the earliest that you can cast this spell, so caster levels 1-4 would be very unusual.
