Anyone seen this little gem from the 80's?

Shadow Lodge

Dance magic dance!

Liberty's Edge

To this day my wife can quote entire sections of this film. I got her the soundtrack one year for her birthday. I like it, but there's no bigger fan than my wife!

Ouch! It bit me!
What'd you expect fairies to do?
I thought they did nice things, like grant wishes.
Huh, shows how much YOU know.

Too many times to count.

Hasn't everyone?

It's been briefly discussed here.

It's my favourite movie. Seen it countless times. Can quote the entire thing. Have read the Tokyopop sequel novels. Own a replica of the Goblin king's ballroom horned mask. Practice contact juggling for fun. Yadda yadda yadda...

This is another childhood favorite. I must also confess, I have had a considerable celebrity crush on Jennifer Connelly from my very first veiwing of this wonderful film. I've been equally creeped out by David Bowie ever since as well.

Dark Archive

Loved this film was actually tempted to replace Naulia from rise of the runelords with David Bowie.

Replace Nualia with Jareth, or with David Bowie himself? Cause, even as talented as the 65 year old singer may be, I can't imagine that he'd be much of a challenge for even a low level group of PCs. Granted, it'd certainly be a memorable encounter. He might succeed in dazzling the PCs with sheer hutzpah and theatricality for awhile. On second thought, that just might be awesome.

Sarah: Generous? What have you done that's generous?

Goblin King: Everything! Everything that you wanted I have done...
You asked that the child be taken - I took him.
You cowered before me, and I was frightening.
I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside-down, and I have done it all for you!
I am exhausted from living up to your expectations of me. Isn't that generous?

I always thought Jareth made a good point. Sarah is quite the ingrate. ;)

Love this movie!

You remind me of the babe...

Shows what you know! After all, Bowie is the Sovereign.

The babe with the power.

I literally just finished watching this movie with my daughter.

What power?

The power of voodoo...

Silver Crusade

ninja'd by Storm Raven. Darn.

Great movie though.

There was one summer in high school in which I watched this movie over a hundred times between the last day of school and the start of the next year. I can recite the whole thing verbatim without the movie even being on to prompt me. It was even several years before I really even had a concept of who David Bowie was (and once I did, I followed him around the country on tour).

So yes. I've seen it, and it remains one of my all-time favorite movies, even if it's got a lot of flaws that I can recognize when judging it objectively.

Maybe you're just taking it for granted that it does.

The Bog of Eternal Stench!

Flaws? For that, I shall make you Prince of the Land of Stench!

The Exchange

I class Labyrinth with Time Bandits and certain other movies that, while technology has kinda left them looking frumpy, brought a lot more imagination to their work than the shiny-to-look-at CGI marvels that have come out in recent years. I'm not a big fan of everything in it (the terrible blue-screen for those head-swapping party animals springs to mind), but it definitely has a lot of charming moments. And I doubt there's a single GM who hasn't been tempted to steal the Escher maze in Jareth's palace for his/her own campaign...

One of the wisest lines in the movie and a quote I've used more times than I care to remember when confronted by an outraged niece or nephew railing against the unfairness of their lives.

I love this movie so much. The most powerful force in my longest running home brew campaign is based on the goblin woman who takes her to the replica of her room. My girls are also huge fans. I expect they will be visiting the labyrinth at some point in their playing the beginner box.

I had a major crush on Jennifer Connily back in the day.

I wish there were more movies that used puppetry, animitronics, and good old 2D animation.

I STILL have a crush on Jennifer Connily.

Or is it that I am still in Lust with Jen?

I loved this movie...it is even entertaining as a adult.

Because of this thread, I just dug up my old copy of the soundtrack and listened to it.

This movie blew me away when I was a kid. I'll take the awesome freaky puppets anyday than the fake looking CGI of today's movies. The movie takes you away to a strange land and wonder, Mr Bowie does excellent as the evil Wizard.

Jennifer Connelly omg, but this movies 'twin' had Mia Sara !!! (Jennifer still has the edge but it's very close...)

Give me the child. Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child that you have stolen. For my will is as strong as yours, and my kingdom is as great...

You have no power over me.

What is your favorite part of the movie?

I want you all to know, that this thread made me stream the movie off of Netflix last night.

I love the old man with the bird hat. That whole scene just cracks me up.

Dal Selpher, I streamed this movie last night on Netflix, too!

I'm sad to report I gave it two stars, I "Didn't Like It."

My Reasons:
I think The Dark Crystal is pure awesomesauce. I've the DVD, but at some point I also watched it on Netflix (there are times it's easier to stream stuff than get up and fire up a DVD ... because like many human beings, I'm pretty lazy at times).

Netflix's algorithms are pretty sharp, so as soon as I "Loved It" on The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth was placed in my "Suggestions for You" (and has been for a long time).

Last night, I was streaming Being Elmo on Netflix (it was in my "Top 10" for me on my iPad), and was pretty emotionally-compromised. I'd already teared up more than once (it's an amazing film), but when the Elmo's puppeteer started talking about Labyrinth, I figured I'd take a break from the movie and watch Labyrinth (since I'd never seen it and needed a break from all that snifflin' and trying not to cry).

As soon as I saw Jennifer Connelly, Dark City exploded in my head, specifically when the character Jennifer is playing is introduced in the movie singing.

I think Dark City is just a work of art, and Jennifer in that movies is as hot as they come.

Seeing Jennifer's character run around the first five minutes Labyrinth trying to act needy and petulant but emotionally-sophisticated and mature ("Emo" before "Emo") flared my temper at the film.

I was already pretty worked up, so even when I tried to like Labyrinth I had trouble.

Maybe I'll watch it again in a few years. I was impressed by some of the set design and construction (the Escher stuff was as well done as anything I've seen on film), but overall I thought the movie stunk.

Of course, YMMV.

Regards,

-- Andy

Tangent! - best Jennifer Connelly movie ever? That would be Requiem For a Dream.

/ after watching, please don't forget to call your Mom and tell her that A.) you love her, and B.) she doesn't need to fit into that old dress.

Silver Crusade

"Has anyone seen it"?? You're kidding, right? ;)

It's the movie that finally got it through my head that Life Isn't Fair. I mean, sure, on some level you know that as a kid, but you hold out this insane HOPE that life is FAIR on some level...and then David Bowie, creepy goblin king, tells you it's NOT.

Oooh.

Wait.

*Goblin* King.

Must write down idea for next off-the-cuff goblin adventure for my Friday night group!!! You guys rock.

My friend used the Goblin King as the basis for a Drow-Goblin nation where goblins stole children from other races and then eventually those children had longer lifespans and came to power.

I have done the very same.

I just hope they don't re-release it in 3D, Bowie's codpiece coming at me would be terrifying.

...C'mon feet!

Yes yes and a thousand times yes. Labyrinth is awesome.

-Also yes, his codpiece would be terrifying. Though I would be one of the first in line to get the movie.
(just so the yes's don't get confused)

I don't even have a 3D TV. But I do have the movie on VHS and DVD and deluxe box set edition that came with mirror mask and dark crystal. DC also being an amazing movie, I'm still indifferent about MM, as much as I enjoy Neil Gaiman, he didn't translate well to screen IMHO. Though a Sandman movie would also be an insta-grab. Even if it were only available for beta (the anti-vhs not the testing phase).

I watched it long ago, even my 12yo kids have seen it a dozen times...

Sir Didymus on Ambrosius ftw!
