What would a Witch spend his money on?

Advice

I'm crafting up a Human Witch to run through a campaign in which he's the only real Arcane Caster in the group. Granted that a lot of his abilities are essentially costless (Hexes, for example), what would a self respecting Witch spend loot on, what would he claim, and what would he need? I don't exactly have a strong grasp of the economy of spellcasters, since I tend to run skill-monkeys, martials, or clerics.

Pearls of Power are nice. Metamagic Rods are useful, especially Reach and Extend.

Keep scrolls for just in case spells. If you plan to craft, that's another money-sink. You also do need to purchase spells to feed to your spellbook, so don't think you'll be rolling in wealth when compared with the martials.

low levels, scrolls lots of scrolls. You can use these to teach your familiar additional spells and to keep as reserve resource (can have every spell prepared all the time after all).

I also agree that pearls of power are awesome and metamagic rods at mid to high level are great too. There are also big six items (well big 4 for a caster) headband of int, ring of protection, amulet of natural armor and a cloak of resistance.

First, select things that make you better at magic:

  • Learn more spells!
  • Headband of Intellect +2, +4, and eventually +6 is the most important item.
  • Minor Metamagic Rods appropriate to your preferred spells (Reach Spell for Bestow Curse, Elemental Spell if you're an elementalist, Toppling Spell if you use any force spells, Extend Spell if you like Summon Monster. . .)

Next, I'd get cheap disposable items to expand your range of available magic. Primarily scrolls and, if your GM allows, partially full wands.

Lastt, I suggest 2nd tier defensive items. They're less important for the Witch than the melee characters, so go with hand-me-downs and deals:

  • Bracers of Armor
  • Ring of Protection
  • Amulet of Natural Armor
  • Cloak of Resistance
  • Belt of Constitution +2

Get a third eye, and stuff for your familiar. Never have to enter battle again!
PS. unless you are ambushed :P

A witching gown.

Liberty's Edge

Cheap women and booze.

Wart Remover

Get protection items for both you and your familiar. Witches are the #1 target of all intelligent opponents.

what level?

Starting at level 1 and working upward. I know, it's a bit of a range, but I was struck with envy and a touch of ignorance upon looking at the old 3.5 'expected gear/level' tables. Probably capping at 15 to 17, all in the same class if possible, because Grand Hexes are awesome. Essentially, I'm looking for a guideline of where money should go, not a shopping list which I can fulfill immediately.

Get tons of rods. If you have a spell selection that can use a lot of metamagic, they are far more cost-effective than pearls of power. Those should mainly be for things that you must use more than once every day (mage armor comes to mind, extend rod + pearl of power for an entire day).

I find witches get more utility out of rods than wizards. Although once I had a wizard named Rodney...

Apples and gingerbread. Lots of gingerbread.
