Advice

my most recent character has died and ive decided to play a synthesist summoner with the dimensional agility feat chain. having never played a summoner really before it seems like a lot of fun. The only problem is never playing anything like this before i have no clue what items to buy so i turn to you for just a little advice 20 point buy if you needed to know, and we really only have the core books(phb, apg, UM, UC)

Buy alot of Lyre's of Building, and have a Bard make you your own empire.

Depends do you want to play a master summoner, a synthesist, or a normal summoner? If you want to deal good damage I suggest giving some of your items to your eidolon to wear. Such as strength boosting items. you should consider flavoring your character and eidolon by complementing each other in skills. Eidolons can take evolutions that give race bonuses to skills. This can lead to great flavor and will make your summoner useful outside of combat. Summoners excel at buffing and summoning and you should treat them so. remember that your casting stat isn't all that important when it comes to spells. Just make sure that it's at a respectable level to cast the spells. Unless you plan on summoning creatures then i suggest buffing it as high as possible. the two good metamagic rods for you are quicken and extend because of buffing. Remember that you're squishy so taking things that make you invisible or that make you fly are good. Also if your dm tries to convince you that handle animal is required for summon monster or your eidolon direct him to the spell itself. The skill linguistics is pretty good for you as well considering that some monsters you might summon will only know a certain language. Also your eidolon is squishy, get it defensive buffs.

This guide is outdated but it will give you ideas on how to create a summoner, Summoning guide.. A lot of people hate the the archetypes for the summoning class so perhaps going vanilla is best. Also remember if you're going to play a summoner make sure that you have all of your references for monsters and spells ready. You'll piss off your party if you have to look through books to find your stuff. In my personal opinion the half elf race is the best because of the bonus evolution points. If you're not used to pathfinder I suggest also using
PFSRD.

I recently played a synthesist. It was pretty fun, and was regarded by the group as the toughest character we had. He only died due to a few bad rolls when fighting wights. Level drain doesn't care if you have a crap-ton of HP for your level. That said, if you want to go synthesist...

Make sure all your AC increases are listed as natural armor.

Bracers of AC +4 or more (mage armor gives a +4, so no need to get any bracers unless they're as good or better than the mage armor really)

amulet of natural armor

amulet of mighty fists (use the rules for adding abilities to items to combine the might fists and natural armor, or even combine them, then add a second "amulet" of might fists in some other form. You can have one with the +5 max bonus, then one with nothing but special abilities, and no bonus. fire, ice, acid, and electric damage each attack!)

Any gear that boosts stats of course.

You lose the effectiveness of having 2 sets of feats/actions by having a synthesist, but there's no squishy summoner to target to bypass fighting the eidolon either. As you gain more coin, just upgrade each item as you're able / want. If you take the feats to make wondrous items yourself, you can do the work yourself for cheap. OR, if your dm allows, you can take the feat, say all your items came from being made, and then buy the items for half price, giving you even more magical item goodness. :)

Lantern Lodge

Why not try Master Summoner? 1d4+1 Lantern Archons with haste by round 2 seems pretty good.
Better if you got a good buff/bard/cleric in the party to make your summons into death dealing machines.
Note: Scrap Master Summoner ideal if your party does not like a single playing spending more time then them during combat.
