Mounted stealth

Rules Questions

Hello everybody,

I am playing a Halfling guide. Since his movement is only 20 ft. and the party isn't willing to slow down, he has to resort to a mount to scout.

Are there any rules for using stealth while riding? Assumed there is shrubbery along the trail providing concealment this should be possible.

TIA
Daireere

Well I would mostly have the mount roll it's own stealth check. Maybe the rider can help a bit by selecting which way to go, but it would mainly depend on the mount.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'd use the lower of the mount and rider's rolls, but simplify it to just one die roll for expediency.

This!

Grand Lodge

Both halfling and mount roll for stealth. If either fails, than that's it Shirley. Party needs to be more reasonable.

First you have to teach your mount to walk on its tip toes.

Second, you need this sound effect. tip toe

I would use your stealth and a ride check to make sure your mount does not get any silly ideas.

Thank you for the answers. I think I prefer the tip toe walk :-P

I talked to my GM and she promised me a opportunity to acquire a stealthy mount, so I can use its (= the lower) stealth check.

Good question. Perhaps look into a Drow riding lizard (or similar animal) who is already trained to perform stealthy maneuvers, then teach it a trick to sneak on signal.

I would think the ability to move hidden and quite on a mount depends strictly on he mount and the players ability to guide and control a mount. So a stealth check made by the mount along with a ride check from the rider. As a dm I would probably apply a negative based on how much weight the mount is carrying. Remember the checks given in the mount info assumes the mount is not carrying anything.
