Creating Magic Items Questions

Rules Questions

What I need is a stone, a pipe or even a necklace that automatically casts calm emotion (duration instant) if I become confused. I'm attempting to overcome the one major failing in the Wild Rager Barbarian.

Character is created-no going back. Lvl 4 at the moment.

Questions
1. Can a spell for the purposes of item creation come from a scroll or wand or otherwise not known source. Our party is severly limited on divine caster resources and I cant afford to take up one of our oracle's spells.
1.b. Can multiple casters create an item together?
2. Would this be powerful enough to require Wounderous Item creation feat?
3. Could it be like a pipe-smoked constantly but not taking up slots.
4.What are the slots-i mean im having trouble finding out what you can wear. i know only two rings at a time, and 1 amulet or neckless-except for neckless of fireballs-but what else?

Liberty's Edge

This question seem to be in the wrong section of the forum, as the Beginner Box don't include barbarians, even less the Wild Rager Archetype.
So I will reply on the basis of the rules from the Core Rulebook.

1. yes (but you would need 1 scroll for each day of the crafting process and possibly a use magic device every day).
It would be easier to add +5 to the DC of the crafting process for lacking a spell.
1.b. yes
2. Yes, one of the casters need to have the Wondrous creation feat. No item is so "low power" that it would be possible to craft it without the appropriate creation feat [or special conditions, like it being a wizard bonded object].
3. Very doubtful. Se comments at the end of the post.
4. Read this page of the PRD: Magic Items. There is a list of the body slots. Plenty of ruler relative to your question too.

After replying to your question, a few comments:
a) removing the main drawback of a class or archetype generally is a bad idea.
b) a magic item that automatically cast a spell is not supported by the standard rules. It is something very peculiar and I strongly suggest not to try to "invent" it unless you have a very complete grasp of the rules and of the effects of changing them.
c) a constant Calm emotion effect would remove the barbarian capacity to rage, so the "smoked pipe" idea don't work. Then there is the "little problem" of using a pipe while raging, I have trouble seeing him taking "slow, gentle and steady puffs" (as suggested by a pipe smoking guide I found on the internet) while swinging a greatsword.

Many things

I thought this was a p[ace for newbs. My bad-I've been playing once a week for like 6 months. And I never owned a game book before then.

Ok so maybe the pipe was a bad idea.
The main reason for doing this is so that there is always a chill button.

2. I just goofed-there really is no wY round that unless this is part of a ring or armor or the like
4.I did read that for double the creation fee it can not take up a slot.

a-I dont see how in this case. Wild rage is Good and very bad. GOOD I can rage for as long as I need to-BAD my friends are now targets and sometimes I just stand around looking stupid or else hurt myself. Middle of a battle and surrounded by baddies Im cool-no baddies and I just killed the last one-I fail a save and I start to attack friendlies.I'm doing my best to avoid that.
b-Nearest I can come to this is an intelligent item . As I well know there can be a butt-load of problems with that respect.
What about an item with a command word that any ally can activate?

c-I think you missed the DURATION INTANT part. The reason for that is that it makes him chill just long enough to see straight again. CE suppresses but does not dispell rage and only does so while active. So Flick it on for a second and suddenly I'm right as rain. I can even do it so long as I get 1 turn of acting normally.

Wild rager-as per ultimate combat

Calm emotions

Notice the concentration duration. No longer than casterl lvl per day and all that but I litterally need it for just a second 1-5 times per day. If I need to chill more times than that-I'm not manuevering well enough.

That's the point. The benefit you gain is balanced by the downsides.

You could have an ally just cast the spell on you. Buy them a wand if they don't want to spare the spell slots.

The problem is that this spell is only accesible to oracles clerics and bards, only 1 of which will be in our party and be able to cast the spell. I mean I get the point of the downside - but why the hell wouldn't I try to nix it? The benefit is no longer a benefit when I cant fight anyone but my friends.
Buying the want is one thing-the reason I'm making the item is for ease of use. If I understand it-and Id like clarification- a command word for an item would would require a free action-unless its a use magic item check which would then be a...standard? This is not a random item but rather a created one so there is no secret to how it functions-only what does it need to turn on.

Another fault of the confused state is that you cant activate rage powers-which could be a real issue for times when I need reckless abandon just to hit. Its nice for sweeping mooks, and it doesnt matter for most of a boss fight, but in between...perfect it aint.

Also-Thankyou Liz.

Heres another option-
+5 insight to will save item-like an ioun stone but not one?

Activating a command word magic item is a standard action.

Even if you made a Ring of Calm Emotions, you would only be able to activate it on the 2nd round after confusion 25% of the time (Having rolled 01-25).

I do recognize that-but someone else could use it. Im guessing no one else could trigger it though-right?Not them wearing it-just triggering.

I could always have someone else wear it but that's different solution all together.

You want an item that a ally can activate. Generally no one can activate an item in your possession (thankfully).
So the ally must have the item and "aim" it at you when it is needed. That is a standard action.
A wand is generally the least expensive option for that. The problem is that the DC of the save is easy and you can't voluntary fail it while confused. A wand with a hightened version of the spell will work better, but it will be expensive.

This is another reason for the item investment. Also-it never says I cant...I can see not being able to-except on the round where I'm able to act normally. In that situation, I could clear my own mind, so having someone else do it just makes it easier. Where does it say you can throw the will save. I'd like to see the rule. Im needling for ground but I've yet to read it.

To put something else on the board-it would at this point just be easier to improve my will save as I said above with a non resistance bonus such as insight or luck just so I could have both and then go from there.
Thats a 20k item if it doesnt take a slot. Only 10 if it did. and only five if it was a normal will bonus. Could I lower the price by restricting the type of will save?
