What is Gestalt leveling?

as the subject says. I have seen it mentioned but do not know what it is

Gain a level in two different classes at once.

I haven't heard the term before, but going by what the word means, I assume it's a description of the way you advance everything on a character at once.

For example, D20 you level up once you hit a certain experience threshhold. As opposed to other games, where you spend a small portion of xp to increase just one skill, stat, ability, etc.

Essentially a two class character that has all the abilities of both classes for a given level (or the better of the 2 if they both have the same ability). A rules setup was presented in Unearthed Arcana back in 3.5.

Here are the gestalt rules.

Gestalt is a term used to describe a new rule in Unearthed Arcana, which basically allows you to level up in 2 separate classes simutaneously, as if you created fusion between 2 classes, keeping the best attributes and abilities from each.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Here are the rules, if anybody needs them.

EDIT: Ninja'd by someone with fricken horns :P

Thanks guys. Interesting, really makes for high powered games I would imagine.

Those aren't horns. Those are my ears. What's with all the anti-elf racism on these boards?

Anti-elf racism? What about the snobby elves being racist against an honest man looking for some company? :P

(Honestly though, I never considered that might be an elf, the glowing yellow/orange eyes totally threw me)

Its the glowing eyes they make you seem more Demony which means you need horns. Besides we get scared of elves with glowing eyes.

I actually have no idea whether the picture was created as an elf or as a horned demon, but I like using it for an elf with a lot of magical power.

So... an Abyssal or Infernal Bloodline Elf Sorcerer?

Being racist against elves is like being religiously intolerant against priests of Rovagug.

To try and get this thing back on topic...

Yes and no. It does definitely make for much more powerful characters in general, but it's also not quite as simple as just doubling the power of the characters since they're still limited to the same number of actions of any other single character. What it primarily gives characters is MUCH more versatility.

The original picture is of an elf participating in a diabolic ritual, or, more specifically, it looked more like Seoni was being overseen by the elf while the cleric iconic (Kyra?) looked on disapprovingly from the side.

The filename on the picture is PZO9513-PactHallRitual.jpg so it's from book PZO9513. Not sure which book that is though.

Actually it is a picture of a Teifling NPC that is from the Tower of the Last Baron Adventure.

They can also be good for low-powered games. While it depends on the combinations of classes, it can often be used to increase versatility without drastically increasing power. The characters will feel more "heroic" though they still have less "i break reality".

Basically, a lvl 5 gestalt party might be able to tackle stuff a 8th level normal party could, but there's no teleporting and such stuff.

It's also great with small groups, allowing two players to cover all four areas or three players to tackle adventures for 4 to 5 players. They aren't much more powerful but they are much more versatile.

It's good for game that only have 2-3 players, but call for 4-5.
