Spellslinger

Advice

I'm debating between playing a gunslinger (pistolero/mysterious stranger) and a spellslinger. I haven't actually had the opportunity to be a player in many, many years.

What are your thoughts on the spellslinger? Is it worth it? Note that I don't worry about playing god wizards. I go for fun more than power.

In my campaign, we have a spellslinger. He's a mad scientist who enjoys explosions and walks on the beach with mad monkeys.

He is possibly the most hilarious character ever conceived at any of my tables.

I personally think it is a brilliant archetype. It completely nerfs the wizard in regards of potential power - i.e., his flexibility, but it also allows him to enchant his weapons to god-level rather early on - if you go two-weapon fighting and precise shot, he actually becomes frighteningly efficient in ranged combat. The flavour is magnificent too.

I say it is absolutely worth it.

I'm going to suggest something unorthodox; Spellslinger 1/Someotherspellcasting class X. Mage Bullets can be fed from other classes spells, and a mid BAB class like a Cleric, Bard, or Inquisitor has further self buffing options to allow them to be more effective as a combatant than a strait Wizard.

I had a Spellslinger/Cleric who was pretty fun (until she was devoured by a phase spider), and the adaptability she enjoyed from being able to slap down weapon enhancements (like Ghost Touch) as needed was great.

Reviving an old thread here to throw out some props to Krispy - I've been puttering around looking for a way to play a Spellslinger without my head exploding for a couple days now, and that is by far the most intriguing solution I've seen. Well done.

Spellslinger 1/ Archaeologist X here. Great fun.

Not to go way off topic here, but there was another thread involving a cleric or druid's spontaneous casting ability and how it only applied to that classes spells. Since the wording is nearly identical between that and the Spellslinger as far as the interaction between cost and result (i.e. sacrifice spell of x level, gain y result) what is the difference? Or could you have a cleric with spontaneous casting convert Wizard slots into heal spells the same way a Spellslinger can convert cleric spells into gun blasts?
