Black Fang Size

Beginner Box

I am trying to figure out the size category for Black Fang, I am using the core rules and the adventure together to teach the game. I don't see a real good correlation between the Dragon presented and the ones in the Bestiary. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Ronin

Based on the pawn size I would large. That is what we are using.

Also the large black dragon from heroes and monsters case promotion is reportedly based on the dragon from the beginner's box...

So I would say large as well.

edit: sorry if I'm sounding snotty, not trying to - bad week @ work and its only tuesday

Thanks both, I appreciate it, and nope no snotty tone was detected...but I can understand it has been a bad two weeks at work and it does not appear to be getting better...hang in there!

The Beginner Box generally avoids the concept of creature size, since nearly everything in it is Medium. So instead of making creature size a stat for every monster, the monsters that *aren't* Medium have their size listed in the Special Ability section of their entry. (See page 63 of the GM's Guide for the Black Dragon entry; that confirms he is indeed Large.)

Also, if you're subbing in a Black Dragon from the full Bestiary, be careful! The one in the adventure is actually even less powerful than the one on page 63; unmodified, even the Tiny CR3 Black Dragon from the full Bestiary could be an overwhelming challenge for a 1st-level party of beginning players.

You're both right... the mini you're talking about is indeed Huge... and he is also based on Wayne Reynolds' fabulous Beginner Box cover illustration.

Scarab Sages

Is there any chance of that mini being made available again to the general public?

Any stock we have that's not already spoken for is earmarked for people who begin Pathfinder Battle case subscriptions and start with Heroes & Monsters. If we still have black dragons left after that opportunity expires, we will offer them to the general public.

(That opportunity will expire when *either*: A) we run out out Heroes & Monsters cases, or B) we release the Rise of the Runelords set.)

Scarab Sages

If it ever becomes available again without plunking down almost $300 for it and the case, I'll buy one instantly.
