Online?
:(
I was looking forward to the new Mechwarrior. So much for that.
Do you mean tabletop or computer, Umbral? If tabletop, have you seen the mechwarior rpg book supplemental "A Time of War". It is the RPG book in the Battletech series released by Catalyst and it has pretty good support.
edit: its here at paizo linkified

Saw this yesterday. It's disappointing.
Mechwarrior 2 and Ghost Bear's Legacy was one of the best PC games ever made. To see it going all mmo-like sucks. I am a fan of the single player campaign modes, I'll definately sit this one out.
On the flipside, Pirahna Games resume of Need for Speed, Duke Nukem, and Transformers doesnt fill me with any confidence either, I'm glad they arent doing a single player campaign.

What's the micro transaction route? I'm a little concerned, as I had bad experiences with mmorpgs. Any idea what the system requirements will be? Also, is this the xbox 360 game that was being touted a few months back?
Micro transactions mean you can use real money to buy stuff for your character or in this case, mech.
So you don't have to go one a bunch of missions for the killer PPC, just 5 bucks and you can put it on your mech.
I am not saying this game will be this way. But seems lately all the free to play MMORPGS use micro transactions.

They're referring to the game as a premium free-to-play game, which sounds like the microtransaction model (really, if it's free-to-play, you sort of have to). Which isn't really a big deal by itself. It rankles a lot of people, but from a rational standpoint it's often a better deal than a subscription model.

Having played a ton of MMOs, both FtP (DDO, LOTRO, Eve) as well as subscription (WoW, DAOC, EQ) I can say that Free-to-Play is the way to go in my mind. For anybody that isn't WoW the micro-transaction route is a much better model than hoping your subscriptions stay high, or that you attract a lot of new people with an upfront monthly fee. Getting them to play for free and then having them spend a couple of dollars for a cool Mech paint job or upgraded gun is the way to go.
A friend of mine is a Catalyst Demo agent and he was talking this game up last night. Apparently their current plan is to start in 3048 and have the game story advance at 1 game day per real day. That sounds pretty good to me, and while I don't know how well it'll be implemented at least they have a plan. The concept art looks good, and from what he was saying this is the game that was made by Tinker and Smith a few months ago that we got teased on, with the rights being purchased and put out by this company.

Time for us to sign on to this nice safe contract with the Free Rasalhague Republic. They're playing big C-Bills and the DCMS and AFFC are actually playing nice for a change. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

My wishlist is for the right balance of PVE and PVP play. I like team focused play against AI just as much as play against other players. In my experience games tend to go all out in one direction or the other.
I know many will be disappointed by the online play but I hope they still offer a good single player experience as some consolation. Give the single player lance mates to play the game alone if they like. I have a hard time believing they would ignore the single player but its happened before.

Anyone playing this currently? My handle is Pan if you want to give me a friend invite would love to meet some more people. PUGs are fun but tired of the 40/60 win fail ratio :)
I play occasionally, but only in PUGs. Haven't had the motivation to check out premades yet. Also, I'm in Europe, so coordinating would be a bit difficult if you're living in the US.
