Detect magic and universal spells

Rules Questions

Does detect magic give a return of "universal" for school? Or do you just get the aura strength?

The Exchange

Good question, since 'universal' is not truly a school. The way I'd handle it in play would be something like, "The spell/item, though magical, does not seem to belong to any particular school."

I think the lack of a school would give you the answer.

edit:I changed my mind.

This.

Universal or no school, either way the person casting detect magic would be able to figure it was universal spell, so it really is a moot point.

The Exchange

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Cavalier: Well, what kind of magic is it?
Sorceror: ...this doesn't make any sense...
Druid: What?
Sorceror: According to my detection spell, this magic is 'vanilla'.
Druid: You must be doing it wrong. (casts a detection spell) ...Huh. Sure enough, 'Vanilla'.

This made me smile. I never realized how much of a druid I am. . .
