The Feral Template

Advice

One of my players is looking at adding the "feral" template to a character he's creating. Is that a Pathfinder or 3.5 template? And if either, what book is it in?

Thanks in advance!

The Feral Creature template is in a 3.X book called Savage Species. If he's asking to play it, than he has at least the template copied down. Ask to see it.

3.5. Savage Species, page 116.

Don't let him.

Under advisement! Thanks!

I suppose if you're fine with d10 hit dice, fast BAB, fast healing, darkvision, +10 land speed, 2 claw attacks, +6 natural armor, Grab, Pounce, Rake, and Rend all for +1 level adjustment, let him.

files this template off in the "If a player asks for it, whack 'em with the CRB" list.

Liberty's Edge

That template is 99% optimization gold.

If your player is going for that and that's your type of game, go for it.

If I remember it correctly, most of the stuff Cheapy just posted is based off of Hit Dice, like the spell-like abilties Half-Fiend/Celestials get.

Just say it's all based off of racial Hit Dice and it's okay.

Unfortunately, IIRC some of the other templates in the same book specifically say "racial HD", while the Feral template doesn't. Plus there's the +4 STR, +2 CON.

I wouldn't let a player touch this template with a 10-ft pole.

The funny thing is he wants to attach it to a Halfling Ranger with the Skirmisher archetype. I'm not the DM on this one, thank goodness.

He doesn't need the Feral template to play a "wild" character if that's what he is going for. If he's going ranger there is an Archtype in UC that let's him take rage powers. The Beast Totem line would be good for this.

Silver Crusade

Tell the GM to take a good, hard look at that template. It's kinda broken all things considered. No one in my group allows it as it's written. At the very least the only people who HAVE allowed increased the CR adjustment on it.

But yeah, definitely have the GM go over that one with a fine tooth comb.

Scarab Sages

Heh, we did a munchkin type game of 3.5 monster playing. War Troll with the Feral Template. Great fun!

that being said, unless you are in a munchkin type game JUST SAY NO!!! :)

I've yet to play in any group where players get to build templated characters. Templates are typically for DMs.

At first level it is overpowered, it counting as your 20th level... it is completely not worth it. It isn't broken, it is the main "problem" with templates, nothing in this game is "balanced" or equal at every level. Static bonuses and abilities will be weighed more heavily at certain level ranges, less so at other ranges. Set the adjustment too high and the template is worthless or close to and never gets use. These are basic design principles, and it surprises me how many people cry "broken" at them.
