Wearing Leather Armor while Non-Proficient

I was working on a new character concept earlier today, one about an orphan that was raised in a monastery but ran away to join a circus as an acrobat and strongman. Essentially, his first level would be in monk with all subsequent levels in fighter.

A monk is not proficient in any armor, but I was thinking of putting him in a suit of leather armor anyways. I understand that it'll negate my Wis bonus to AC, as well as my flurry of blows. But what about other penalties? I know that, when you aren't proficient in armor, you take the armor check penalty and apply it to all attack rolls. But what about armor that has no armor check penalty, such as leather armor or padded armor? Other than limiting certain class features of a monk, is it true that you can essentially wear this armor, even non-proficient in its use, without any penalty?

Basically yeah, it *might* take longer to put on or off -- but that is a strictly a, "I'm not even close to saying this is the case but something seems to remind it it maybe the case, and I'm not bothering to look it up or push the issue."

You've got the Dex limit to your AC (as normal) and any movement restrictions or ACP that comes with the armor and the ACP applies to attack rolls.

If you are lucky enough to have armor that doesn't have an ACP, with a dex modifier to AC less than the armor allows and that doesn't affect movement then you are basically getting away wearing armor at no penalty.

That's it. He can wear a -0 ac penalty armor without any real penalty besides losing the monk abilities.

I don't know one way or the other on the donning/removing, but you're correct on the rest.

For instance, a rogue with the Armor Expert trait (reduces ACP of armor worn by 1) might consider investing in a mithral breastplate. Such an item counts as light for all purposes except proficiency (so he doesn't lose Evasion or anything) and would have an ACP of -1, which the Armor Expert trait reduces to 0. Add a masterwork buckler or light shield for even more AC at no penalty.*

*Note, however, that you still need shield proficiency to take something like Improved Shield Bash, so no "true" sword-and-board rogues without proper investment in proficiency.

The only other limitation is the arcane spell failure... so... no? I guess you'd get off without any (additional) penalties.

I don't see where the circus concept requires him to wear leather armor. Especially since as a strongman, your act would be bare-chested. Sounds like he'd be wearing bracers instead.

Isn't it moot when you get the proficiency from fighter?

Conceptually if he is a first level monk running away, why would he wear armor until he got the level in fighter anyway?

Is there some reason you are not just making an unarmed fighter?

Because he wants to keep armor training and that first bonus feat.
