Can some one help me on my conversion to Pathfinder?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Okay so I'm thinking about getting the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, notice I said thinking. And I wanted people opinions on the game. You see I'm playing a 4e DnD game and am not really getting a good vibe (not to say I don't like the game cause I do). But I am also working with AD&D 2e and its too rules heavy. So would you guys suggest Pathfinder? (Yes I'm looking for biased answers because I want true fans opinions)

P.S. I never played 3.0 or 3.5

Pathfinder is kind of rules heavy also, but it is fun and allows for a lot of customization. Feel free to come here if you have any questions, and it will probably take a few sessions before you feel comfortable.

Do you know anyone that will help you learn the game or will you be "the guy"?

Been a long, long time since I played 2e, but gut instinct tells me that if you find 2e rules heavy, you're going to find Pathfinder rules heavier.

However, all is not lost.

My recommendation is to wait for the box set to come out and pick up that. It's less that the core rulebook, contains everything you need to play, and is simplified because:

(a) It only covers up through 5th level, which omits the needs for many rules, spells and abilities that only apply at higher levels.
(b) They omitted a few minor rules that don't affect play much yet can be added later with little impact (attacks of opportunity come to mind, for example).

The down side? If you do decide to pick up Pathfinder, you'll still need to pick up the books later. But in reality, levels 1-5 can provide for months of play, so the opportunity cost is relatively low. Heck, it's about the same as an evening at the movies for 3 people.

- I concur with gbone, with a caveat. PRPG definitely has more rules than 2e, but PRPG rules are much more organized. You could also try using the PRD, which is free.

Pathfinder is not rules light. Actually compared to 1st or 2nd, it's definitely rules heavier... very much heavier. On the Ton of Bricks heavier in scale, but so was 3.X. You can pop over to the SRD sites and judge for yourself.

As an alternative if you want a new spin on 2nd edition you could try Kenser and Company's Hackmaster RPG. It's based on 2nd edition with some modifications. If nothing else the books are a hilarious read.

Felorn,

First, off, welcome! Super cool of you to post on here as ask what folks think. Turns out you won't find a savvier bunch of Pathfinder players around.

Secondly, it's all about finding a game that creates an experience that's right for you and your friends. If you guys are having a blast with another system, you might want to keep right on truckin' - if it ain't broke, don't fix it! That said, we're kind of fond of the versatility of the Pathfinder RPG around these parts. But we also understand that if you've never played 3.5 the learning curve can be kind of steep.

If you just want a peak at those rules, you can check out the contents of all of our hardcover rulebooks online, for free, right now - NO sign-up or charges apply - at the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Reference Document.

As you'll probably notice, that's a TON of stuff, but that's not everything you need to play, that's like all the hardcore rules and expanded options and extra material we've put out in our Pathfinder RPG line of rulebooks, the Core Rulebook section of that document has the majority of the reference material you'd need to create characters and prepare a game.

Again, though, we know that's a lot. So, in just a few weeks here we're releasing our Pathfinder RPG Beginner Box. This is the perfect starting place for players interested in learning how to play the Pathfinder RPG without slogging through a whole tome of rules. It's got everything you need to ease you into the game without overwhelming readers with ever possible option or possibility. Folks should think of this as just a starter kit for new roleplayers or youngsters, it's really built to welcome anyone interested in Pathfinder to the game without it feeling like a college course.

The other thing I'd point you at is the TON of free stuff we have on the site. In fact, check out the blog post right here titled Free Stuff on our Website! There you'll find lots of resources and more than a little taste of what Paizo and Pathfinder are all about.

And if/once you're ready to get rolling, let me suggest a few awesome things. First, we've got Pathfinder Module: Crypt of the Everflame, and adventure built for players and GMs just starting off with the Pathfinder RPG and a really exciting start to any new campaign. Then there's also both Master of the Fallen Fortress and We Be Goblins two adventures you can download free PDFs of right now, that start at first level, include pregenerated characters, and are also just blasts to play (in the latter you get to play Goblins!!!). So totally snag those if you get a chance.

Aside from all that, just check out our blog for additional tastes of the rules and the newest from our campaign setting and feel free to ask around here with any questions you might have or advice you might need. Again, aside from having tons of super fans on these boards everyday, the Paizo staff is constantly on here, so you might get one of us answering your questions as often as not.

Thanks for posting, I hope this helps a little bit, and good gaming, whatever system you choose!

I cannot recommend Pathfinder if you're looking for something rules light (or trying to avoid something rules heavy).

I can recommend Pathfinder if you're looking for an engaging setting with great adventures.

What do you want?

Pathfinder is not rules light. In fact in most ways it is more rules heavy then 4E. If that is your primary driving force for you're choice, pathfinder is not for you.

That said there are a lot of definitions of rules heavy. Could you give some examples of things you didnt like? There are also ways to simplify pathfinder, such as using the upcomming begginer box and using a system like E6 to keep things from getting overly complicated. But in the end it really is a matter of what you are specifically looking for.
