Paladin or Ranger

Advice

Basic team is so far is oracle who can channel, a straight mage, Gunslinger, and a monk. My character concept is something in the likeness of Druss (David Gemmel).

My real question is who would be better a Ranger or a Paladin. I know for the most part it is just personal preference. I am 50/50 either way. I think it would be nice to smite evil, but really is it necessary? we are doing the Second Darkness adventure path so who knows?

I know that there are not any real melee characters in the party so we need a striker from what I can tell, the mage and the Gunslinger will have the ranged opponents screaming so Melee is the prime idea. Also I will be using a great axe no matter which class I pick, I can hear the groans of disapproval but then again, it is all about flavour for me.

Some advice and personal insight from others is greatly welcomed. Thanks

Dark Archive

Probably Pally, holds the line better, which is what that party needs. None hold it better than a pally, with swift action self-healing, great armor, and great "Boss Killing" damage output. And much less likely to fall to saves thanks to that Cha bonus setup. Probably the most survivable character. Wield a luceren hammer and swing for the moon, with combat reflexes for extra attacks.

Thanks for the advice. I was kind of thinking that a Paladin was the better choice anyways. Always nice to know that someone else thinks the same way.

Thanks again

I'd check with your DM and the other players too...

If you have a DM who hates paladins, or a group of Neutral and Evil characters... Paladin may be more trouble than its worth.

Paladin codes are fun to play with... but if the DM actively tries to make you fall, it wouldn't be much fun.

Silver Crusade

From the players guide.

Occasional wandering paladins of Iomedae and Abadar come to the city in hopes of wresting a few souls from darkness and combating the wickedness rampant in the city, but most end up departing in frustration. More then one such holy warrior hase disappeard in Riddleport, as crusades against the city's potent crime lords rarely last long or end well. Palading of Erastil and Sarenrae tend to have a slightly more success in the city, taking a lighter approaches and ingraining themselves among the people by providing education and healing to the frontier city.

The other thing to rember with Paladin. The first thing you do is enter a gambling turnament. The over all AP dose not lend it self well to Paladin. Intresting to play one, but it will be tough.

Grand Lodge

As a paladin you are highly unlikely to have no targets for smite in this path. However, ranger will give you more bang for your buck in the long run, once you tailor your FE choices to the path. The skill bonuses will help a lot, as well as the damage bonuses.

Being a big fan of Mr. Gemmel and exspecially Druss " The Legend" Deathwalker, i beg to differ.

Maybe when he came down the mountains he was a Ranger, Bellis Axe Master-Trait/Fav.enemy human and maybe he picked up a couple of levels Barbarian when he hunted after Rovena, but mostly he´s a Fighter, specialized on the BattleAxe.
He was properly trained for the arena in Marshrapur and saw battle before becoming the champion for Gorben.

Looking at your party, I´d give him at least a chainshirt or medium armor and a shield, maybe even shield focus, to give him max AC.

Second Darkness is a tough AP for Paladins.

Why is that?
