Ear-piercing Scream... rules unclear

Hello all,

the duration given for the spell is 1 round/lvl.

However, the damage done should be pretty instantaneous, and the text states that a creature failing its save is dazed for 1 round.

So, what does the 1 rd/lvl duration entry mean? Can I scream several times? Is this just an error? Whatever?

I have been unclear on this one too. My witch took it because its a fort save and those are rare for a witch. I think that the spell is 1 rnd just like sound burst. That is how we have been treating it. Having a dazed effect for your level in rounds makes it basically a save or die and I can't see that happening at lvl 1 with a damage kicker. However, it definitely needs an ERATA to clear things up.

I guess it is just a typo.

1 rd. /lv. dazed would be really nasty for a meager level one spell. Daze Monster is level two, works only a single round and has a HD-Limit. Errata would be really nice.

One of my online players has taken this. Right now, I am interpreting it that he can hold it for 1/rd per level, but once he screams that ends it.

I like that interpretation.

In my group we've decided its probably a typo. There is a consensus that this should be "duration: 1 round".

I like this idea though...

Whether the spell as described would more properly have a duration of "instantaneous" or "1 round" would depend on whether the daze effect should be dispellable.

Having it last for multiple rounds would make it one of the best 1st level spells ever. Being able to daze an opponent for 10 rounds at 10th level = insta win. This spell would be a level 1 SoD that gets better with levels and comes with a damage kicker.

I brought this up on the errata page and got a response. The spell lasts one round period. Much more balanced that way.

It looks like it has been fixed to instantaneous

Ear Piercing Scream

School evocation [sonic]; Level bard 1, inquisitor 1, sorcerer/wizard 1, witch 1

Casting Time 1 standard action

Components V, S

Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)

Target one creature

Duration instantaneous; see text

Saving Throw Fortitude partial (see text); Spell Resistance yes

You unleash a powerful scream, inaudible to all but a single target. The target is dazed for 1 round and takes 1d6 points of sonic damage per two caster levels (maximum 5d6). A successful save negates the daze effect and halves the damage.

So it has been fixed. It's instantaneous damage and one round of dazed.
