Two-handed weapons, and only one hand

Rules Questions

Session this evening ended, my GM and I were disagreeing on a rules question -- he quickly made a ruling and moved on (like a good GM should) but I still want to have the question resolved for next time.

Regarding two-handed weapons; the text referring to using them in a single hand says

My GM ruled that it is as a wrong-sizing rule, and is a -2 penalty. I think that it means that you cannot make attack rolls at all, and is it "ineffective". What do you guys think?

Inappropriately Sized Weapons: A creature can’t make
optimum use of a weapon that isn’t properly sized for it. A
cumulative –2 penalty applies on attack rolls for each size
category of difference between the size of its intended wielder
and the size of its actual wielder. If the creature isn’t proficient
with the weapon, a –4 nonproficiency penalty
also applies.
The measure of how much effort it takes to use a weapon
(whether the weapon is designated as a light, one-handed,
or two-handed weapon for a particular wielder) is altered
by one step for each size category of difference between
the wielder’s size and the size of the creature for which the
weapon was designed. For example, a Small creature would
wield a Medium one-handed weapon as a two-handed
weapon. If a weapon’s designation would be changed to
something other than light, one-handed, or two-handed by
this alteration, the creature can’t wield the weapon at all.

Meaning no you couldn't use a two-handed weapon in one hand.

Unless it's a size smaller than you.

The Gm ruled correctly, and Grick is right it would totally depend on the size of the weapon.

Now if its already a size larger than you, you can not wield it at all.

Was basing my statement off the assumption that the weilder adn the weapon were the same size as in a medium fighter and medium greataxe

Then your GM was correct was merely a -2 and then a -4 on top of that if there was no proficiency...

So if your a fighter and you have weapon focus and greater weapon Focus then you get to negate the -

only if its a size smaller not if its your size.

meaning a mediums creature can use a two handed small weapon in one hand or a one handed large weapon in two hands but not a medium two handed weapon in one hand.

A -2 penalty is a far cry from "not being able to make attack rolls at all". Personally I'd make it a -4 penalty and call it a day. You also lose out on the main reason for using the two handed blade... the 50 percent extra to str bonus for damage.
