New magic items - spell target you

Rules Questions

Is there any limit on what spells you can put in the X/day or continuous use magic item?

One of my players wants to make a ring that gives him permanent shield. I have no problems with spell completion items, but these spells seem to have that "you" limit for a reason. Any advice?

From what i know there is no limit to the number of charges, though it would be a constant effect of +4 AC and protection from magic missile. I would charge a very high amount for a ring such as that. i'd say at least 35 thousand, as its better then a ring of protection +4 (which is 32k).

The only thing that makes it better is that it blocks magic missiles. Highly situational, if you ask me, unless the DM likes to use that spell way too much. It also prevents the character from benefitting from an actual shield unless they enhance it to have higher than a +4 bonus to AC because the shield spell is actually a shield bonus which only applies to flat-footed AC. Rings of prot are deflection, which applies to flat-footed AND touch AC.

I'd put it on par with the Ring of Prot +4. 32k.

The shield bonus has both benefits and hindrances, though I would rule carefully on this, since it is in effect taking a shield into a non-slot, there is a ring of force shield but it still requires a person to wield it, only adds +2 to ac and costs 8.5k if I am not mistaken. The potential AC for someone not using a shield goes up quite a bit while keeping the benefits from a 2handed weapon. I'd not base the cost on the shield spell but rather on the effect it causes, making it at least as expensive as a ring of protection +4, putting it at 32k, I'd avoid magic missile immunity personally, but if you want I'd probably increases the price by about 4k, effectively a permanent brooch of shielding combined with another item's properties, 4k seems a reasonable estimate to me.

Takes me to 36k at a minimum price I'd charge, while in itself inferior to a deflection bonus a character considering to wear the ring will likely have no shield bonus and deflection bonus is fairly easy to get.

Baseline, it is usually a bad idea to approach a permanent spell as the actual spell when adjucating the price of an item, first look at other comparable items and come to a fair price based on it's effectiveness.

Well, the catch here is that the ring stacks with protection ring as it provides shield bonus, it's a force effect, so it works against ethereal and doesn't require hands to use at all. magic missile protection is just a sweet bonus really.

And the best thing? Spell level 1 x caster level 1 x 2000 gp x 2 duration modifier (1 minute / level).

4000 gp? WTF?

Let's try that with CL 7 you need for 28000 gp... still not there IMO...

No limit, but remember item creation is about power.

So a permanent shield item is going to be more expensive than 16000 (+4 shield AC) + brooch of shielding cost + something for brooch of shielding that never expires.

Which is going to be a clash with the rules lawyer :/

Even the limited use per day should be more expensive here IMO for what it does.

Actually, the rules lawyers should be advocating for higher prices and avoiding the chart (SL x CL x 1800 gp) type stuff, since the rules say to use the chart as a last resort. ;-)

Shall I say selective rules lawyer? Exact written message would be appreciated.
