This isn't going to be an easy one to keep afloat for six adventures so I'm really interested in seeing how it will be pulled off. Heck, even if the campaign doesn't end up being my cup of tea...the ancillary material in those books is bound to be first mate...I mean rate.

This... actually kind of disappoints me. I'm not a huge pirate fan, so a pirate-themed AP leaves me a little flat. Not saying it will be bad or anything; given Paizo's overall AP quality, it'll probably wind up being quite good. But much like Legacy of Fire wasn't my thing, this isn't really my thing either. Kudos to all the pirate fans, though. =)

I know what you mean. I'm skipping the carrion crown AP for the same reasons. It sounds good, if that's your thing, but...

On the other hand, I am looking forward to the Pirates, but the Picaresque Tian Jade Regent AP that's coming up is what I'm really looking forward to.

Wait a minute...before everyone gets too hyped up....will the PC's actually get to play bloodthirsty pirates, OR will they be the heroes sent in with a nation or government's fleet to eradicate a pirate menace and clean up a sand-boxed area of a pirate threat???

if it's set up even remotely like Kingmaker, you'll probably be able to go any direction you want with it. hell, i'm running kingmaker right now and the nicest person in the party is the lawful evil inquisitor of Asmodeus.

You landlubbers be silent before we board you! Arrrr. We're the terror of the High Seas. Follow us into the Eye if you dare!

We'll sink your ships, keelhaul your men, take your women as slaves, and make illegal copies of your software!

So it isn't just a figure of speech, pirates are the culprits. And we had to expect this was coming guys, we have an AP with lots of ninjas, followed by one one with lots of pirates. Ninjas and pirates go hand in hand.

Dark Archive

Im not sure how I feel about a pirate themed AP... I'm interested in seeing where Paizo takes it. I was kinda hoping for something with a bit more subtlety, but if done right this may scratch that itch. The biggest question I have in my mind right now, with this being the tenth AP and rounding out the god articles, Norgorber is due for his. Again im wondering how this will fit with a pirate AP... in the more recent APs the god articles have focused on the most prominent ones for the AP. Does this mean good ole Blackfingers will be behind some of the piracy shenanigans?!?!

Hey, I never said I only like "standard western medieval fantasy" - far from it! :)

While I'm not opposed to a pirate AP per se, it is disappointing to have three "themed" APs in a row (horror, asian, pirates). An AP in the vein of runelords or crimson throne would have been very preferable in the sequence.

Aren't all APs themed?

Council of Thieves was already similar to Crimson Throne, so I don't expect them to do another urban/political path that soon. I will admit an Absalom path would be cool in the future though.

I'm fairly certain the designers consider Jade Regent in the vein of runelords, considering it is sort of a sequel.

I for one am glad they are branching out to new areas. I'm sure that staff doesn't want to write the same AP over and over again as well too.

The last APs were not really standard western medieval fantasy fare (unless, of course, one considers Cthulhu-esque fantasy as standard fantasy). I would love to have a well made, standard medival fantasy AP with PRPG-Rules.

This sounds fun. Im rolling up a newspaper and swatting faces if the pirate accent shows its face at my table though. Im hoping less jack sparrow more George R R Martins Iron Isles. Make way for the drowned god! We do not sow.

I'm fairly certain the amount of jack sparrow in the campaign will depend a lot more on the particular play group than on Paizo.

I'll be honest, I've mostly planned on running Kingmaker for my next campaign. Pirates might actually push up to the top choice. Of course, when I start a new campaign will likely be the deciding factor.

Kingmaker has been an absolute joy to run, at least so far anyways. if this pirate AP is even half as well designed as Kingmaker, it'll blow the roof off the house.

Silver Crusade

My 2 cents, ignore or flame to taste.

1. I like the pirates theme, but I'm not a fan of playing the "bad guys.". I'd rather play a navy defending aginst pirates, have a Letter of Marque and Reprisal, or even Steel Falcons fighting slavey.

2. I'm probably in the minority of board posters in not wanting a "no-paladin" AP. I'm interested in seeing how it does.

3. Sandboxy is good.

4. Like the kingdom building rules, plunder rules seem gimmicky to me.

5. I love Paizo's subscription system. I'll restart my subscription with Jade, but Carrion Crown and "Skull & Bones" are .PDF only for me.

6. Paizo needs to do a Name that AP contest.

7. Sahuagin article? Merfolk? Besmara article by Sean is required. Tengu as player characters?

I don't think runelords is at all like jade regent, since one is an asian themed travel across the world and the other is a fairly standard (if extremely well-executed) big bad guy save the world ap.

I like branching out, but not every group wants to jump from kingdom sandbox to jungle travel to horror to asian travel to pirate sandbox. Maybe one or two more "normal" aps thrown somewhere in there.

Mr. Slaad wrote:

I could write a series of adventures just based on the interactions between Cheliax and Andoran. just the slave rescue operation alone screams adventure.

I'm not particularly excited about a pirate themed AP either to be frank. But while I dont particularly care for it I wont begrudge someone else their fun. Also the AP's actually flesh out the world so what ever occurrences are happening on the high seas that prompts this adventure will be a must read.

I know there are people who hate all anime. THIS IS NOT FOR YOU.

For everyone else with an open mind?

The sandboxy/kingmaker referenceds kinda make me wonder if you could start out as privateers hired by Cheliax or a different Inner Sea nation sent to break the Free Captain's hold on the trade routes to Mwangi. Just an idea though.

Have you actually played every AP published so far in order? I don't think Paizo expects anyone to have managed that. Maybe I'm from a different school of adventuring, but Serpent Skull seemed rather "normal" from my perspective.

But if you can't look back at the last 8 Adventure Paths and find one you haven't played but want to, I feel kind of sorry for you. I myself haven't actually played in a single one yet. I didn't discover Paizo until after my current campaign started. We've continued that campaign and have just reached 17th level. I expect to end the game around the end of the year at level 20. At that point there will be 9 APs to choose from and I would be happy to play in any of them.

PS: I'm also rather amazed at how many gamers are expressing distaste for pirates. I understand (if don't agree with) the anti-anime reaction to an asian themed path. But pirates have always been a classic fantasy adventure theme.

Once I believed if you ever wanted to see your dream campaign come to life you would have to run it yourself. But Paizo has taken the campaign I've been designing in my off hours between work/uni/kingmaker prep and done all the hard work for me.

So now instead of running my dream campaign, I get to be a player in it, and that's just gravy :)

Add this in for a dash more sandbox: 2nd and 3rd (and so on) scions from your Kingmaker campaigns characters are the ones sailing the high seas.

Doesn't have to be standard fare Western Medieval Fantasy type and Zaister like. I was actually hoping for a AP based around the Worldwound to be honest. Dropping into Hades or the Abyss to help quell part of the demon invasion sounds like fun.

Yep, not at all my thing either but I know a lot of people have been wanting a pirate-centric AP so I'm happy for them.

Well, while I have not voiced any opinion in the 10 hours or so I have known of this AP.. I can say this:

I like my fantasy "old school".. medieval fantasy, knights in armor against dragons, and so on. What I am seeing in Golarion and the APs is a continuing trend toward more modern elements and tropes. People asking for a Pathfinder Modern.. wait and watch.. it seems to be heading your way in the core.

From the inclusion of the Printing Press in the campaign setting through American Revolution inspired feel of Andoran, and the French Revolution inspired feel of Galt, and on to the Alchemist class and its recent archetypes (very 19th century) and the increased presence of firearms (and the very 19th century American West feel of the names "Gunslinger" and "Grit").. there is a feeling of increasing "modern-ness" in the game. Cannon (which "Pirates" conjures in most minds) will pretty much put the nail in the coffin for me.

So while I have no objection to "Pirates" in general (because they existed long before black powder weapons were common), Pirates with black-powder weapons and the associated trappings brings the game too much into the modern era for my taste... though we have been edging in that direction a little more each year for the last 3 or 4.

To be fair, I have enjoyed some of the recent APs (though I have read them only, and not played them).. Kingmaker is one I love. I think what is different with the Jade Regent and now the Pirate AP is that it is harder for a GM to remove any objectionable elements.. they are right there at the core of the story.

I share many of your concerns. However, to date, Paizo has failed to let me down.

The Alchemist class, while it certainly provides support for the 19th century mad-scientist, isn't limited to that trope. And since the game already has flesh golems, buff spells, and potions -- I've found it fits surprisingly well.

The whole 17th-century anachronistic elements of American and French Revolutions isn't to my taste either. However, it's primarily limited to the art. I was pleasantly surprised at how useful the Andoran companion turned out to be -- I expected to thoroughly dislike it.

I do, however, strongly share your opinions and reservations about the firearms & the "Wild West" introduction of the gunslinger class & grit mechanics. Saying that you "have" to have cannons and muskets to do pirates "right" is rubbish as well. Honestly, despite my love for the setting and the increasing number of Pathfinder subscriptions I'm carrying, I'm watching this closely. If firearms become an everyday weapon like a longsword, I'm done with Golarion. The setting won't be the same regardless of promises made.

If I wanted "traditional" pirates with muskets, cannons, etc. I'd be running campaigns in Freeport (which I also like very much) or Iron Kingdoms (which I liked until the mechs/minatures aspect took over the setting). I picked Golarion b/c I wanted my "(extremely well-done) kitchen-sink fantasy setting" -- with swords, magic, dragons, knights, witches, plate armor, swords & bows -- and NO DAMN FIREARMS.

Dark Archive

Well technically Golarion has always had fire arms, just rare and expensive. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Silver Crusade

Is it really a kitchen sink setting if you don't include everything and the kitchen sink? (for the record guns are part of everything). Really APs are run entirely as home games, don't like cannons and guns just don't include them.

Or maybe you could run Skull and Bones in Freeport! You don't HAVE to run APs in Golarion.

I have no problem with Golarion as a setting including guns in the piratey bits, and the cowboyish bits. I have a gunslinger in Kingmaker as well.

Dark_Mistress wrote:

I haven't panicked (or sharpened my pitchfork) yet :)

I am just saying that I see a trend toward increasing use of modern elements that are undermining my enjoyment of the setting.

Relegating firearms to optional status is fine... but when people say "Pirates", that conjures a specific image. The same argument was used by Paizo to "justify" (not that they needed to) the handling of Ninja and Samurai. It cuts both ways, though.. when someone says "Pirates", the optional black-powder weapons and cannons become a lot less optional due to the popular image (even though there were pirates long before, etc.).

Sinbad movies are arguably a pre-gunpowder pirate story in an Arab-esque setting.. and I'd be quite pleased with that or similar.

So I will wait for more details, but the term "Pirates" coupled with the obligatory "ARRRR"s seems to swing more toward the gunpowdery.

Dark_Mistress wrote:

While this is technically true, just a quick read of the original campaign setting's firearms section vs. the new Inner Sea Guide's shows a relaxation of that constraint. James Jacobs addressed this in another thread stating that the change was to allow GMs the freedom to expand the role of firearms in their campaign if they chose to do so. (Makes sense given the Gunslinger and firearms rules coming with Ult. Combat.)

So while the official answer/stance hasn't changed much, it has nudged slightly in the direction I don't like.

And let's be honest here, when was the last time "rare and expensive" meant anything to a PC above level 4?

And I'd totally be down with a Sinbad-style of pirate AP over a Blackbeard-style of pirate AP. Give me Conan and Belit style pirate goodness any day.

Put me in the "pleased to see a pirate AP" column, me hearties! :)

Agree with these points. I was about to say "I hope Paizo thinks about Good and/or Lawful characters" but now that I consider, I'm sure that they have.

I don't really want to play the Dread Pirate Roberts and
slaughter the innocent, but playing Horatio Hornblower or "Lucky Jack" Aubrey would be great! Love the idea of building your own fleet and your reputation. :)

Maybe I'm just easy to please, but every single AP theme so far has grabbed me. Not that I am equally thrilled and impressed with every one of them, but they are all appealing. In this case, I think they have succeeded in getting me just as excited as I was at the announcement of Kingmaker.

We'll be talking more about the "Skull and Bones" AP in the weeks and months to come, but I can tell you this right now: while you CAN play it as bad guy PCs... that's not what we'll be necessarily assuming. There are countless examples of good guy pirates in popular fiction, and its those characters that we're the most inspired by when it comes to roles for PCs to take on in this AP.

That's a good point and one I hadn't thought of yet. I don't have a problem with most of the other more modern themes but whereas I'm not that interested in a Pirates AP I was still planning to keep my subscription because I'm curious about what they'd do with it. If it turns out that the AP is written to include the widespread use of gunpowder (cannons and muskets) then I'd probably have to rethink that.

Someone mentioned GRRM's Iron Islands earlier. That's the kind of pirate campaign I would probably be able to enjoy but if we're doing Pirates of the Caribbean then, well, no.

Now this is the information my new character is looking forward to.

Faghin the Gebbite Necromancer and his crew of blood skeletons and plague zombies send you many thanks for this opportunity to come out of mothballs and restart his pilgrimage of blood and terror up and down the coasts of southern Golarian.

Now the only real question is will it be Sinbad Pirates or Blackbeard pirates?
That's gonna be the biggest conflict for players now.
