Hello everyone like i said in the title a couple of friends and i just started playing the game and are all at 2nd level (our DM is also a first timer). I was just wondering on this.
I have a Ranger already which i have a generally good grasp on how to use so for now no questions there.
My questions start with the Druid i just made (In case my ranger dies just a backup PC) i rolled the stats and spected him for having a animal companion and the race i choose was a half ling so i wanted to have the ability to mount said pet so as not to slow down the party. I was going to go with an Ape or Cheetah but our DM isn't sure how that would translate toward riding it. the PC only weighs about 30lbs so i would assume it would be no biggy just need some advice from people who know what they are doing. Thanks in advance!!!

Well, based on the rules for Paladin (and Cavalier in the APG) - both of which gain mounts which are, essentially, animal companions, then what you want to do is certainly possible... Though not with those particular animals.
The general rule of thumb is that your mount must be one size up from you -- so you're somewhat out of luck on the Cheetah, which is also small, like the halfling. (Also, just in general, an ape would make a very poor mount, and you probably need a quadraped for the increased carrying capacity).
Using the cavalier description, they say that a wolf would work (and, to be fair, is somewhat iconic) - however, since you're a druid and have access to the full list of companions, I would also say the large cat (tiger/lion) would work, --- as would some of the additional companions introduced in the Bestiary, like the dinosaurs (Triceratops, wheee!), as well as the Aurochs, Elephant and Rhino.
