Can a sorcerer use a wand of cure light wounds?

Rules Questions

It is not on his spell list, can he use the wand?

Which check does he have to do?

Dark Archive

Use Magic Device, DC 20.

In the skill section, page 108. Anyone with UMD can use wands, even if the spell is not on their class list.

Notably, this is the same check for a fighter or a rogue to use the wand as well.

hello im just wondering if there is some convoluted way that a sorcerer can craft a wand of cure ___________ wounds? via a scroll or something.

Multiple people can contribute to the creation of an item. The sorceror could be creating the item and hire a cleric or another capable of casting cure light wounds to complete that step of creation.

Have a Scroll of CLW or a Cleric (or other caster with the spell) Buddy who can supply the spell.

Alternately, craft a Wand of Infernal Healing, which is on their spell list.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Note that all items have prerequisites in their descriptions. These prerequisites must be met for the item to be created. Most of the time, they take the form of spells that must be known by the item's creator (although access through another magic item or spellcaster is allowed). The DC to create a magic item increases by +5 for each prerequisite the caster does not meet. The only exception to this is the requisite item creation feat, which is mandatory. In addition, you cannot create potions, spell-trigger, or spell-completion magic items without meeting their spell prerequisites.

In the case of these types of items, the creator must know or have prepared the spells being put into the item. If you can't cast the spell, you can not make a potion/wand/scroll of the spell.

As kestral287 mentioned, you might wish to make a wand of Infernal Healing.

An Impossible Bloodline Sorcerer can get:

"Spontaneous Generation: At 3rd level, you gain Craft Wondrous Item as a bonus feat. In addition, when you craft a magic item (except a potion, a spell-trigger item, or a spell-completion item), you may ignore one spell prerequisite without increasing the creation DC. You can ignore an additional spell prerequisite at 9th, 15th, and 20th levels."

Ok so that's not Wands, but make another "Spells per Day" or Ablative item instead...

Gloves of First Aid
or
Restorative Ointment

OR you dip a level of Lore Oracle or something for Stabilize/CLW you can easily do
Shawl of Life Keeping

Plus as CHA is the stat for UMD and it is your primary stat, you are golden with just buying a CLW wand for 750g once you have a few ranks in it; it's far cheaper than shelling out for a higher level wand of Cure...

(Plus you can Sleep Mithril Cobras!)

All the items have the "must have spell prepared or known" even for types of items that allow you to omit the spell requirement.

This requirement is also fulfillable with magic items, such as scrolls, and I see nothing that would prevent it from working for wands, as the spell requirement is being fulfilled, not omitted.

But the easy way to make a wand of cure wounds as a sorcerer...
Dip a level of cleric, druid, oracle, bard, witch... and see if the DM will let you cooperatively craft with yourself.

Saved me from having to quote it on my phone, yay!
