Cohort XP

Do cohorts gain XP if they're not in the encounter in which the player earns XP?

A cohort does not count as a party member when determining the party's XP. Instead, divide the cohort's level by your level. Multiply this result by the total XP awarded to you, then add that number of experience points to the cohort's total.

By RAW, yes, though your GM might rule otherwise.

I would have to also that it would be up to your GM as to how EXP would work for a cohort that did not attend the battle.

I would probably allow a preset percentage of your chars exp to be spent on your cohort if he is contributing in a way that isn't an abuse of the system.

The rules do not say. However, do your PCs get XP when they don't participate? It ought to be the same for the NPC cohort.
