Rules Questions

The last time I ran I had a player cast fireball against something that was immune to fire. He said he had a feat that allowed him to change it to a different type of energy. I looked through the books and I can't find the feat. Does it really exist or am I just missing it somewhere?

Elemental Spell - APG page 158 to 159.

Dark Archive

Elemental Sorcerers can also do this with their bloodline arcana:

Quote:
Bloodline Arcana: Whenever you cast a spell that deals energy damage, you can change the type of damage to match the type of your bloodline. This also changes the spell's type to match the type of your bloodline.

But that is only to one other type of element. For example, an elemental sorcerer (air) could cast fireball (fire) or fireball (electricity), but not fireball (cold).

I appreciate you might be looking for this after the fact for self edification. But, if a player claims a resource, my point of view is that it is up to him to provide you with the source and text. If he can't, his character doesn't have it. YMMV.

As can Admixture School Wizards for that matter... everyone's doing it these days! ;)

Wait, wait, back up a second there: The player claimed he had this awesome feat, you didn't know it, and you just took his word on it?

Did you know gullible isn't in the English dictionary? ;-P

Before you run off and look up gullible in some dictionary, here's what I say: It's the player's duty to proof his stuff is legit. That means that if he has a feat you don't know, he has to show you where it's from. In my case, that means that I want to see that stuff written down.

I'm not accusing anyone of faking anything (in your case, there are feats that let you change magic into a different element, but you have to pick the element when you get the feat, and if you want more than one element, you have to take the feat several times!), but when in doubt, ask the player, not the boards. If he can't show you the feat, he doesn't have it.

Yeah, the issue doesn't tend to be someone mocking up a feat or resource. Rather, it is, "I heard about a feat that does this, so I took it..." along with assumptions, misunderstandings, errors, failure to realize there is a spell level bump for the meta-magic, missing prerequisites, etc.

Well, there is Energy Substitution and Energy Admixture, but those are D&D 3.x feats. I have yet to find them in Pathfinder, but I do not have all the books...

Admixture School granted ability can do this as well.

Yes, I know what gullible means. This game is among close friends. It's hard to accuse someone of cheating when that person is not only a close friend, but a close friend who has helped you whenever you needed help. And I think he was mistaken, not actively cheating.

He uses PCGen, said that pathfinder rules are loaded, and he found that feat there. I'm not even sure he's even ever looked at the real book since he always uses pcgen.

For what it is worth I don't think he cheated -- at least not on purpose -- I imagine he simply didn't fully understand one of the options he was using. The APG is the advanced player's guide for a reason -- not insulting him but it can be very easy to get confused with it.
