Damage Reduction

Rules Questions

Point for clarification came up in our new game. Most of us are new to Pathfinder, and D&D type games in general & were seeking clarification on Damage Reduction.

If a monster's DR is listed as 5/-, does that mean that only spells, spell like effects, and energy attacks bypass the DR? You can't use Longsword +1 to bypass it, or is that what's meant by 5/magic?

Thanks!

you are correct

I'll throw one up here just for the halibut . . .

What is it talking about when it says DR 40/epic?

I only ask because I've not been able to locate "epic" for clarification. Does this mean I can only bypass said DR physically with an artifact or something?

Scarab Sages

ATM there isn't an epic book for pathfinder so they are few and far between.... they may exist but I'm not positive.

Epic refers to a weapon enchanted to something greater than +10, or a Epic spell (spells only available after lvl 20). Paizo hasn't produced an epic level handbook yet, but 3.5 had one for reference if you care to check it out.

EDIT: Falls over dead from a knife in the back

Dark Archive

dr/epic can only be overcome by a weapon with a +6 or better enhancement to hit and damage.

currently the only way to get that is to "bane" a +4 or better weapon.

or smite ignores all forms of dr

Scarab Sages

If you're fighting a golem (adamantine.....) then Scarab of Golembane would bypass DR.

I believe the only creature I can recall having that DR 40/epic tag is the Tarrasque, so it probably wouldn't come into play in any game I'm running anytime soon. I was just curious as to its meaning, as I mentioned, because I saw nothing in the rules to clarify that "epic" tag.

I appreciate the clarifications from you all. It helps to give me a clue on the matter. Pathfinder is really my first real foray into 3E rules, as I've been a 2E player for about two decades now, so I'm incredibly unfamiliar with any rules outside of PF, and am still adjusting to PF itself!

Well, welcome to the pathfinder rules forums then :D We'll be happy to either answer any question you might have, or discuss it for forty pages and then flag it for the faq :)
