What is the point?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Seriously.. whats the point of butterfly knives? You spend an exotic weapon prof to just be able to flip it open?

And the dueling sword.. again, exotic weapon prof just so you can take a second feat for weapon finense. Not really seeing the point here for these two.

I'm sure there is more out there as well.

pure flavor

but flavor isn't really a reason to make something exotic

Sovereign Court

It's one of the disappointments I have with the final Pathfinder rules. They could have easily overhauled the notion of exotic weapons, separating out all of the weapons that are mechanically superior to martial weapons and making them exotic, and then dispersing the rest into simple and martial.

It wouldn't have mucked up backwards compatibility, and it would have given a huge number of flavorful options for players to use.

Instead we're stuck with an incoherent categorization and the loss of vibrant flavor.

you're kidding right? finessable two handed sword with 1d8 19–20/×3 crits?? power attack -1 atk / +3 dmg... make it keen for 17-20/x3... pure DEX no STR fighters will have a field day with this!

In addition, using the Inner Sea Companion book's Aldori Swordlord fighter archetype, you can do this:
========================

The following
benefits only apply when a swordlord is using an Aldori
dueling sword and carrying nothing in his other hand.

Defensive Parry (Ex): At 3rd level, when an Aldori
swordlord makes a full attack with an Aldori dueling
sword, he gains a +1 bonus to AC against melee attacks
until the beginning of his next turn. This bonus increases
by +1 every four levels after 3rd. This ability replaces armor
training 1 and 4.
Disarming Strike (Ex): At 5th level, when an Aldori
swordlord successfully disarms an opponent using an
Aldori dueling sword, the swordlord also deals normal
damage to the target, but without the normal Strength
bonus to damage. This ability replaces weapon training 1.
Steel Net (Ex): At 7th level, an Aldori swordlord can
throw up a blazing wall of steel to defend himself. When
fighting defensively as a full-round action with an Aldori
dueling sword, the swordlord’s penalties on all attacks in
a round are reduced by 2, and the dodge bonus to AC is
increased by 2 for the same round. This ability replaces
armor training 2.
Counterattack (Ex): At 11th level, an Aldori swordlord
can make an attack of opportunity as an immediate action
against an opponent who hits the swordlord with a melee
attack, so long as the attacking creature is within the
swordlord’s reach. This ability replaces armor training 3.

Worth it now? :)

Actually is a 19-20/x2 crit. Errated. Otherwise just having the x3 crit was good enough to make it "exotic" weapon.

Now that archtype does make it worth having, even if you can only be a fighter and use it.

Especially since the (revised) Aldori Dueling Mastery Feat from the Inner Sea World Guide allows you to treat it as a piercing weapon for the purposes of every Duelist PrC ability

errata? where? it's the same as a longsword in damage and crit range, so taking the exotic feat to bring it from x2 to x3 sounds about right... (of course, the finessable aspect of it could make it a bit too good... but if x2 instead of x3, this weapon has nothing on an elven curved blade)

So basically what is needed is some actual stuff for butterfly knives.

Too bad the one class that would have the best flavor with them (rogue) can't get them till level 3.

From the armory erratta

Quote:

Ins ide back cover

In the dueling sword, Aldori row, change the Critical
column entry to “19–20/×2.”
In the falcata row, change the Critical column entry to
“19–20/×3.”

The Exchange

Try bumping all weapons to exotic. Every weapon needs some degree of training to even understand how to use them effectivly in combat.

That was always something that kinda got to me as well.

My fighter who trains all his life on using a whip.. is prof with all martial/simple weapons, sheilds including towers, and all the way up to heavy armor.

But I have to spend more character resources just to be able to use the weapon he spent his entire life training with..

You could always use something akin to the weapon group rules from Unearthed Arcana back in 3.5. The concept makes sense.

Maybe make some weapons cost more proficiency slots if they'd be more difficult? That could help balance, since some of the exotic weapons are quite a bit better (though some decidedly are not)
