I am curious to know about how the IT department is structured at paizo. I ask this because i am an IT guy at a small/medium sized business filling many shoes, including PC tech, network admin, Phone guy, cable dog, moral support for randoms, and system admin. Now, i did work at a large company that had its IT dept broken into smaller sections, the pc tech, network admins, video/audio guys, phone guys, and so on. And to me, it just seemed rather tedius to have it all broken down, because there were some times when the A/V dept was neck deep in projects and the pc techs were twiddleing their thumbs cruising facebook while they waited for work to come in.
I am wondering, how does paizo fall into this? are there set It depts with its own idividual staff, or is it a hoj-poj of randoms with multiple talents doing multiple things?

From what I understand, the Paizo IT Department is Gary Teter and Ross Byers (and an as yet unhired third person). :)
There are actually two tech positions right now. Vic Wertz is also the technical director and is part of the technical folks here.

I'm not sure that we want to go into too much detail about this kind of internal workings at Paizo, but broadly speaking, Vic is the technical director and is in charge of pretty much everything digital around here. I'm the senior software developer and Ross is software developer.
As far as task allocation goes, anybody caught twiddling their thumbs at Paizo will be presumed to be underutilized and either given more tasks to do or replaced with someone with the gumption to go find stuff to do. There are always things to be done around here.

Gary was caught once twiddling his thumbs, well, tentacles and now has to cover both scum and villainy.

So what you're saying is you work REALLY hard not to get caught...

I can answer this one, I think. :)
We don't have a huge IT department, so everybody pretty much chips in where they are needed. If new servers are going in, it isn't unusual to see all three tech guys working on them at one time or another. If a computer isn't working, Vic is usually the first line of defense, but if he is gone (like we are now because of all the snow where we live) then Gary or Ross could pinch hit as needed. In general, this is how much of Paizo is organized. People have tasks, but they are expected to pitch in in other areas as needed. No thumb twiddling allowed! :)

So, I am looking at Lisa's icon and reading " No thumb twiddling allowed!" I think I can see thumb nubbins; Does her icon even have fingers? That aside, if the snow thing gets really tiresome, there is always Florida. Most of the people couldn't make it today at my job because the beach was so nice. >.<

I thought Gary and Ross were just in charge of keeping the hamsters feed. ;)

My husband does IT work for ... a government entity...
Anyway, as a contractor, they have a small set-up, which will probably be like what you're looking for info on, Dewn Mou'tain.
There are 2 Oracle DBA's. Two Unix Admins who fill the shoes of network architecture, security architecture and virtualization architecture, though there is one 'lead' in that catagory. And then the boss - who is the ultimate salesman for his team, and works with vendors to get the right equipment for the right price. As well as 1 project manager to keep everyone on task.
They are looking, IIRC, for a lower-level admin to do more operational work. So that would make their nice 6-"man" team a 7-"man" team that is highly effective and efficient despite ... paperwork, etc.
Hope that helps.
(And I /WISH/ Paizo had the budget to hire my husband. I admit it! I could live further West.)
