Hello all, i hope you will not be angry with me for this thread but i really like you know that i have made an iPhone application to create and manage in a complete and automatic sheet your animals companions.
The application is for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad that can have firmware 4.0+ and it is very very complete.
You can check a preview from youtube and from my support Site

Thank you for your attention.

It looks great, but just so you know, I could see many, many grammar mistakes in just the demo youtube video. I take it French is your first language? For example, "Malus" isn't the opposite of "Bonus" in English. Malus is "penalty" in English.

I'm so sorry. i'm italian. anyway, all feats and special qualities/attacks and all you need for your companion is taken from PRD, so you will not have errors there...

I'm sorry for this stuff, i will fix this by the way. ^^

Hey, don't apologize! You can't fix it if no one tells you, after all. By the way, are you sure your app is compatible with the PRD license?

I use only OGC elements, i respect all the OGL points, and i have used full made in house images and logos. So i'm sure of that.

I just bought your app. Good work! I'm the developer of the PFR, d20 Rules and d20 Modern apps. Here are some thoughts of mine regarding Animal Companion:

- The app does the job well. It could use some polish but works overall. If I played a druid character, I would use it.

- Though the app will technically run on an iPad, don't say so until you've made the app universal, because iPad users expect apps to look good, not just magnified.

- According to the OGL, you're not allowed to mention a product or even imply compatibility with a product. Thus you can't spell out "Pathfinder" in the description of the app on iTunes. Paizo came after me (in a very friendly and helpful way) and told me to remove direct mention of the Pathfinder product in the PFR app.

- I think you could charge more for the app. As long as A) there is no app in direct competition with you and B) you can look a customer straight in the face and say "it's a fine app which you will find useful, take it or leave it", then you can easily charge $2. It sucks to sell an app you've worked hard for, and which people find useful, for $1 minus the apple tax.

- Your sales will probably see a huge spike the first couple of weeks, then the curve will flatten out on some number between 1 and 10 per day.

- Making the app universal (both iPad and iPhone/iPod) will probably only cost you eight hours of work and should be worth your while with the boosted sales. The iPad is a better RPG device than the iPhone.

Well, those were two cents from a fellow dev! I wish you luck!

Oooh. Good chance I'll pick up PFR soon, now that I know about it. Sure looks like it beats the website for quick reference and bookmarking...

Do you include developer clarification like d20pfsrd.com does?

Bobson wrote:

Maybe :-) ...I'm not sure what you mean by that "developer clarification"?

But, let's talk about the Animal Companion app in this thread. The PFR app has it's own thread over here.

Since there is a self described "software developer" in this chat, How about a summoned monster app ? I need to keep track of multiple summoned monsters , over several rounds of game play and I am just so damn tiered of hauling around a index card box.
It's even worse when I GM.
BTW I will definitely check out your app, and thanks for your hard work:)

work in progress for that.

I'm waiting for an italian PRD (5clone.it is working on it), but english version will be ready at the end of march. (or may be sooner) And it will be really handsome.

I came across your iphone app and bought it. It has some potential, but i have the following suggestions/issues:

Note that i own an iphone 3GS

- I made a bear and noticed that it had max hitpoints at first level. Is that correct? I thought only player characters got that.

- The first time I made an animal, the app crashed when I went to save it. After that it's been stable.

- Would it be possible to fit the claw and bite damage somewhere on the main combat screen instead of having to click on the buttons to see it? Also, those buttons don't show the STR and other damage bonuses. For example, on my bear is shows bite as "1d4" when it should be "1d4 +2". You actually only see the bonuses when you click on roll. :(

- on the main page, can you put both the animal name and type? For example: "Teddy, Bear" instead of just "Teddy". That way if you are tracking multiple animals it's easier.

You were lucky. ^^ only first d8 is MAX. the second one is rolled. You just got another 8. cool isn't it?

Quote:

I will try this. But maybe you had a lot of things in background, because the app, during the savedata uses 2 MB in RAM (very cheap), and the maximum RAM used is 30 MB. The app Doesn't have any memory leaks, that's why apple has approved that. During beta testing, i stressed so much my iPhone 3g/4 (i have both), and i got no crash with the final and stable version. Anyway i will test more. I think i will try the Database approach in next release, so the savedata will be easyer and faster. Anyway, i hope you will not have problems now...

Working on that. i will do this in next release. I'm here for you to give you the best experience with this application.

In the statistics page you can see the "Animal" in top left area. I'm afraid that if i put name and type then you will have some problem reading it.

If you enjoyd this app, Please leave a review on appstore. Thank you all.

Can you make it where i can input my starting hit points please? My DM isnt going to allow my app to determine my starting animals hit points.

Not that your handsome and intelligent GM won't allow it. I ... I mean HE is playing with straight values for hit points... no rolls.

And, per a post by James Jacobs (linked here), Animal Companions do not automatically get max hp for level 1. They roll 'em.

Would it be possible to be seeing this also available for droids in the future. Im hesitant to buy it as of now for my ipod, but for my phone or galaxy tab i would in a heartbeat, since i keep those on me more than my ipod. Also just adds more options for you to make money.

That makes the app even more wrong. Please fix this hit point problem and i'll give you an excellent rating in itunes.

Thoradin202 wrote:

You know: to have an application on appstore we need to pay apple for the license (this is yearly paid). I need to make money first to have a new license on droid.

If you have an ipod consider to buy it now, because i will have more applications coming out and will be iphone only until i have the money to get the android license too. Sorry for that.

Noted and fixed. Anyway i repeat that the app DOESN'T give the maximum for first level, but only for first of two Hit Dices. Anyway i will change this.

KSAC wrote:

Even more wrong? don't you think to be unfair? what's wrong with the application? you can create a complete animal companion in 30 seconds and you think the application is wrong? :D Seriously, what you want the app to do? maybe some coffee? Anyway, you just need to ask, and i fix. I'm here for you.

I announce that tonight i will work on it, and tomorrow i will propose the update to apple.
I hope to have you happy. ^^ Thanks for your indications.

Cool

By "Even more wrong" I was referring to hit points. Please default to the average (5 for a d8 animal) and it would be great. If you add the total damage bonus to the bite/claw damage popup that would make it perfect.

Well. update done, and sended to apple.

Now ALL dices are rolled for HP, you can set your custom HP (set only dices), Damage bonus displayed on combat screen and on synthetic attack info. ^^

I also corrected all "malus" with "Penalty". Now, let's wait for apple.

Left a 5 star feedback in expectation of these changes.

BTW, now that I have the attention of some iphone pathfinder devs - what I'd love to see next would be an app that tracks a druid's stats in animal form. You enter your attributes (which are saved, of course), you various magic/misc bonuses, you select a wildshape version and an animal and it does the rest.

For example, i input that i'm a 6th level druid, using beast shape II and a dire tiger with a +2 str belt and it give me all my combat stats.

i'm sorry, but this is a real specific app, that would take 3-4 days of hard work. After that this will be downloaded by less than 50 users... By the way i hope to have something better in the future... something like animal companion, but for players not only druids. This will take me a lot of time, and i hope i will have a fair reward. ^^

Thank you for your review. And if you want animal companion doing something else just tell me. i will make it real.

I found a bug last night.

If you choose a big cat, and raise your druid to 4th level, it gives a blank "choose advancement" box. If you select normal, it then gives the large cat the 7th level advancement stats (even though you are only 4th and there shouldnt be any advancement at this level).

It's consistently reproduceable.

Scroll it down, and it will appear. Sometimes it happens. The description is there, but it is not visible. a simple scroll down will fix this problem. (the code is exactly the same of others, so i don't know why it happens... all information are properly displayed so... bha!)

Quote:

Yes. This is a bug in my database.. Human error. Thank you. i fix this, and i send new build to apple... but this mean that i have to re-enter in Queue for apple review. ^^ i'm sorry for the delay that this will cause, but i prefer to fix this now.

KSAC wrote:

Fixed. thank you for bug report.

No problem. I love an author who is willing to make adjustments so quickly. If i find anything else i'll bring it up.

Apple has accepted my upload. Download it from appstore, use it and tell me how it goes.
Thank you for helping me fixing those stuff.

Remember: all uploads are always free if you bought the app before. S no more money will be charged on you.

Downloaded it and tested it during a very boring conference call at work. :)

So far everything looks great. I entered my hitpoints just fine and i like how you calculate all the bonuses based on the raw number. Also, the damage bonuses are showing correctly when I click on the attack button (i.e. bite). Finally the big cat data is correct.

I created about 7-8 animals and couldn't find any problems at all.

Great job!

I only have two suggestions for the next version:

1) Add a "temp" category for damage as you have for attack and AC. That way if I always use something like power attack and i can have it pre-set separate from any magic bonuses. I suspect this would be an easy change on your part.

2) Take advantage of the ipad's extra space. I suspect you could consolidate all the tab views into one single page with bigger screen. However this sounds like a bigger change than #1.

Definitely worth the $2 to anyone playing a class with an animal companion (druid, ranger, oracle, etc). I'll update my review on iTunes accordingly.

Well;
Next version will see Animal Companion as universal APP, i will do something for power attack, i will implement Skill focus and MAYBE, i will include more animal companion taken from the bestiary. ^^

Thank you. We will se this new version when my new application will come out (summoner)

I noticed on the horse the combat section says hoovers. I beleive this should be Hooves. Otherwise the horse attacks with a bite or two vacs( Hoover vac brand name).

LOL. I will fix this. :D

First of all, great app! I was looking for something like this and it's a perfect fit. The only suggestion I have is to allow the user to add custom animal companions and/or allow the user to manually edit the ability scores. I'd like to be able to add in outside bonuses to their ability scores, but I can't seem to find a way to do that. Also, the ability to manually add a feat or skills and maybe have something like a "custom" tag on them.

This app is made for simply use animal companions according to basic RPG d20System. So Yes, i can add the ability to modify your scores, No, i will not add the ability to set up more feats/skills. This will create confusion in this APP, and i want all under control, so users knows that they are following rules without any doubt.

i hope that you will partially enjoy this answer. in next release we will have also the ability to set Temporary ability scores, e when you want you will be able to go back to original ones.

Very nice app. I was inputting my character's dinosaur companion and came across a few problems. 1) When choosing the Weapon Focus feat, you cannot select a specific weapon(talon, bite, claw) and the +1 bonus to hit is added to all attacks. 2) The CMD calculation does not include the +1 bonus from the Dodge feat. 3) His Int(3) lists a bonus of -3 instead of -4. 4) The Int-related skills follow through with the -3, except for Linguistics which has a +3. That is all I see for now. Thanks for all your work on the app. It is really appreciated.

Actually dodge DOESN'T give bonus to CMD

Dodge (Combat)

Your training and reflexes allow you to react swiftly to avoid an opponents' attacks.

Prerequisite: Dex 13.

Benefit: You gain a +1 dodge bonus to your AC. A condition that makes you lose your Dex bonus to AC also makes you lose the benefits of this feat.

fixed all this stuff.

dodge affects cmd. pretty much any ac boost that isn't a shield armor or natural armor bonus affects cmd.

dodge
deflection
sacred
etc.

Ok, i will fix it too.

ALL fixed and sended to apple.
I'm sorry because i'm late, but i was busy with my new project: Summoner. Now sended to apple. (i will open another topic for its presentation).
Thank you for bug reporting. New version has:

Bug fix:
- Fixed problem with Linguistics skill;
- Fixed wrong calculation for negative bonuses with abilities scores;
- Fixed wrong critical calculation;
- Now app adds dodge bonus to CMD;
- Fixed problem with some animal size (for example horse or camel)
New feature:
Now you can choose the attack for "Weapon Focus" and you can take this feat more than one time.

If you had an old animal, the app will fix all bugs without asking, so you will not need to remake your companion.

The first FIVE peoples, who will post a message down here, will have a promotional redeem code to download the app for free. Be quick. :)

Liberty's Edge

I purchased your animal companion app last week, and I must say, it's pretty good! I was able to quickly rebuild my 14th level druid's animal companion without much hassle.

There are some things I wish it did though. I've built my animal companion a +2 belt of physical perfection - right now the only way to include this in his stats in the application is to go in and manually add +1 to his attack and damage, etc. If he gets another spell cast on him in battle, such as haste, I now have to change that +1 to a +2, then back to a +1 after combat.

It would be nice to have a "permanent modifiers" section for things like magic items or spells that are always up, and "temporary modifiers" for things like round per level spells. That, or you could program in every magic item and spell description manually ;)

Anyway, great app, I'm pretty happy with it. It just doesn't work so well at higher level play with different buffs from multiple sources.

I'm looking forward to your future updates, it sounds like you've already thought of the major upgrades that I could use!

Well. I put in for a redeem in the summoner thread, so i feel bad asking for one here. But I will take one for this app too and give it a spin if you don't mind. I promise to give a solid review of the apps when I get try them out.
