Had a very interesting dream last night.

I dreamt I went to visit Vanykrye at his house. I kind of just turned a corner and there his house was. I went to knock on the door, and as he opened it a cat would run out into the street. Vany, his beard in a very interesting and perfectly coiffed fashion, would ask me to get his cat, and I would go out, get the cat and bring it back to him. But every time he opened the door, another cat would get out, and Vany would repeat his request. He would always speak in the same voice, the cats were always different, and on rare occasion I would see his wife, who would wave at me, but not really say much of anything. Not sure how many cats I saved, but it had to be five or six or so.

Coiffed. Ok. Just not how it's usually described.

Also it's only one cat that will teleport through the door and she will absolutely shred you when you pick her up. Whirling dervish.

We're back to Harry Potter with Book 2, and returning to exploring the Library of Ancients in Final Fantasy 5!

By the grace of our glorious queen, you shall not take our land! Rule Britannia!

No Britons around, only Angles, Saxons, and some Danes.

No glorious queen either. Just a bunch of petty kings.

Funny enough, I'm from East Anglia.

I don't think that I manage to reach your region before the end of the free play (which happens tomorrow).

For now I am going to sleep anyway.

I have reached the East Anglia!

Not much to raid around here, though.

Northwic looks rather differently than I remember... Beisdes obvious differences in architecture, lack of later castle, and so on and so on, the land seems... Flatter? Though maybe it is influenced by smaller buildings.

I might have seen the cathedral that I have just climbed to unlock the travel point... Not sure if it is the same or a different one.

Also, damn, it's been eight years (and over seven since I returned).

Ah, it definitely wasn't the cathedral I have seen. The later was built by Normans two or three centuries later.

Sovereign Court

You say flat, I say open plan! ;)

On the plus side they definitely fixed the graphics for Cyberpunk 2077 on the PS 5.

On the other hand, it's still boring as hell.

Say what you want about Far Cry at least they understand you're here to play a video game and not watch several times interactive episodes with bits of action sprinkled in between.

I think I just went through various realities and saved the cats of various yous. It's the only way to explain the different beards and random wife appearing.

Much too expensive for me. Doubly so for a Dark Soul-ish game.

Maybe in a very far future when it will be on some big (75-80% off) sale.

I'll probably get it this weekend if it's still in stock.

Just how childish am I?

It's the start of Week 5 in Impus Major's semester. He's in a Human Sexuality class that assigns more homework than almost any class I've ever seen, math and physics included.

So every night Impus Major gets home, I feed him dinner, then I say, "Impus Major, it's time to do your sex work!"

And somehow, it never gets old...

I'm living someone else's dream job. As briefly as possible:

- We got a new Senior Vice President (SVP), who's a "visionary": He wanted us to stop what we were doing, completely rethink training, and focus on what the students were actually trying to accomplish. Honestly, for a visionary, he's got pretty good vision. My only objection to him is that he's one of those people who sees no difference between training, documentation, and help, and that's seriously problematic. But he admits that he's never run a training department before, so he's willing to listen... to anyone at the VP level or above.

- And there's our blocker. Our VP won't suggest anything different to him. When he asked for a "canonical example" of our "new, aspirational training" our group wasn't even invited to the party "because [we] don't generate enough revenue". We tried anyway. We requested funds for new tools, following the SVP's mandate. The VP blocked all such requests. We built our models anyway. The VP refused to show them to the SVP because we weren't part of the assigned group.

- Since we'd already done so much work, we approached the training division (for some reason at our company they're a separate division, which is about the stupidest thing I've ever seen in a training organization). They flat-out refused everything we'd done, telling us to shut up and keep doing what we'd always done.

- Our attempts to self-publish were blocked.

- At this point, my manager resigned in frustration.

- Since she resigned and she's a decent person, she doesn't want us working on anything outside of our direct mandate. So my job right now is to do standard course updates for all my courses. Typically takes 4-6 weeks. And it isn't due until the end of June.

So I'm sitting around with nothing but mind-numbing work that isn't due for at least 4 months, and getting paid a hefty sum to do that.

Some people would love to be in this position. Me? I'd much rather be doing something useful for my company and intellectually stimulating.

Sounds like you should switch with the other Captain for the spring and summer and then work with us. We actually regularly have tech executives and CEOs that work with us for 4-6 weeks or so while they're on leave so they can get in better shape.

You don't even really need to know anything about plants because I already know more about plants then he does.

And the best part, no pressure for you because as long as you don't sit in your truck for half the day then you'd already be more productive than the other Captain.

Just leave your computer at his place since you're working from home anyway and it doesn't sound like the they'd notice anyway.

Just an idea.

Something tells me salary would be an issue. GothBard and I are moving rapidly towards paying off our debts and retiring to Europe. Which takes a staggering amount of $$$, so we can only move to jobs with salary upticks.

Otherwise I'm sure I could find a couple dozen small companies and schools around here that would love to have me. But once you're working for a $100+ billion tech company, they pay you a salary that makes it incredibly financially difficult to leave the industry. I'm sure it's quite intentional.

This says more about my shopping habits than I care to admit:

GothBard: That explains a lot. I hadn't realized that Amazon bought Whole Foods
NobodysHome: Oh? What does it explain?

GothBard: The advertising strategies and the way the store feels
NobodysHome: Ah. Yeah, that makes sense
I personally never cared for any of those places: Sprouts, Whole Foods, Berkeley Bowl, etc. They were all *SO* full of themselves, and full of customers who were so full of THEMSELVES, that it was always unpleasant to shop there.
"I just want to buy groceries, not make a statement, thanks."
"Then you're in the wrong place. Get out!"

Nope, youd still get your paycheck and he'd still get his paycheck.

He's dumb enough he'd think just sitting around working from home is upgrade enough.

I can do mind-numbing work if the paycheck is right.

I have done that before.

"I'm in Switzerland and I have a spare bedroom and a minivan. I'm willing to drive to the Ukraine border, pick up a family, and let them stay in my house for the duration. Can Global Megacorporation help me set that up?"

Yeah, I have a European co-worker trying to out-NobodysHome NobodysHome. I'm proud of him.

EDIT: For 'Merikans, he's volunteering for a roughly 16-hour drive each way to help out a family he's never met. No idea who he is, but I'm still proud to be working at the same company...

At the moment I am bombarded on facebook by friends and their friends sharing information about auctions, collection, help, offering transportation from the border to various parts of the country (lot of Ukrainians have families who were living around Poland and elsewhere within EU), various kinds of help for refuges, and some even offering living space to Ukrainian refuges as well.

That's the beautiful part, the other Captain LOVES dressing up and acting like other people.

But only if he can make it look sexy (at least in his own head).

Liberty's Edge

For the first time in about a decade or so I had night terrors again and now I'm stuck in the usual kind of brain-chemical hangover that follows them, probably will be burning that off for most of the day.

I guess I'm just glad I don't get them very frequently like I used to back in my teens and early twenties but it was really crushing to find out that they're not gone for good.

Ugh. Sorry to hear that! I know people who have "social anxiety nightmares" where after socializing they can't sleep because they're terrified that they did something wrong, so I know how debilitating such things are.

NobodysHome: It's an amazing opportunity! We'd help everyone in the division, we have the time to do it, and it's really interesting work.
Manager: Now what if I told you that the demo team won't provide any environments for the training?
NH: <Obscenities deleted>

We're willing and able to do good work. We're just handcuffed and prevented from doing so.

Today the client is asking to get admin rights to the SharePoint they're going to migrate... because they're busy building new sites in it.

No! Build your new sites on the domain you're going to actually keep! We could quite honestly move the whole thing by Friday if you would stop jacking around with it!

Sometimes it's hard to sympathize with your fellow employees who have a somewhat legitimate gripe when they whine about being stuck in the Stone Age. Global Megacorporation implemented a, "Your direct deposit must go to a single bank account policy."

Valid complaints:
(1) We use multiple accounts for tax purposes to pay domestic employees
(2) We use multiple accounts to avoid bank fees

Whiney but reasonable complaints:
(3) Now I have to pay my mortgage manually!
(4) We got threatened for having an account inactive for too long, so now we deposit $1 per month into it to make sure it stays active

Are you fricking kidding me complaints:
(5) I have accounts in multiple banks and I don't know how to transfer money between them

This really is beyond the pale.

Impus Major is back in school, on campus full time.

Doesn't matter. As I mentioned, one of his instructors assigned a quiz over the Presidents' Day holiday. Today he got not one, but TWO take-home exams, due tomorrow.

I literally cannot express how much this frustrates/enrages me.

At least 2nd shift didn't lie to me tonight about the laundry. Sometimes he'll tell me that he had "been working on it all night" and "did most of it", and then I'll find that he had done well less than half. Tonight he just said "there's still some laundry for you to do". When I went back to look, there was a bin ready to fold, some sorting that yielded another half load to wash, and less than half a load in the dryer that had finished an hour before 2nd shift started. So, he definitely didn't do any-which annoys me-but at least he didn't lie to me about it. So I guess that's something.

Oh, come on, Steam, taunting me with sales on multiple games at the same time...

And just as Humble Choice gave really worthwhile bundle too!

Three plus two, add five, move six, multiply by four...

Dammit.

Choices, choices.

Maybe I finally get to play through all Mass Effects this time (Humble Choice has the Legendary edition) - I got stuck somewhere in the first one and never came back.

One of my friends recently played through Legendary Edition and was totally taken. I wonder if they made the first game really better than it was when I played...

Hmmm...

Actually, the złoty fell a bit, so I managed to buy all three games I wanted and the humble choice by burning through almost all of my PayPal money. Yesterday was first so I have just got patreon money.

Yeah. So much of saving a few dollars on PayPal.

I could use a few more patrons. A shame I abhor doing proper marketing work.
