Well look, you're getting lucky already.

NH, PM.

I've a buddy who does electrical trade work, just got his final certifications this last year and has been working on various crews through his union for the last several years even while in school who conveniently enough paid for 100% of his trade school tuition and fees. He DID have to pay out of pocket for most of his personal tools as he didn't want to just rely on the shared equipment from whatever trailer the crew he works on happens to have at a given moment but he didn't mind that too much as he does side work on his own anyhow.

The pay is great, bordering on $40 USD/hour for most jobs with time-and-a-half for overtime (most weeks he ends up needing to put in between 5-15 hours of OT though) but it does require him to travel 30-90 minutes a day depending on the job site and sometimes they end up even putting him up in a hotel if it's a job that's going to last a week or more and is further out than that. He does occasionally have dry spells where there is just no work that he's interested in doing because it's too far away during winter months but he's made more than enough to just NOT work during those times and consider it a vacation. I say go for it, and I highly suggest looking into a good electricians union that can pay for the costs and help find jobs for you as that is apparently the biggest headache involved with the profession according to him and after he joined one he'd pretty much never been out of work for more than a few months, and like I said, that was mostly his own choice.

The pay alone makes it pretty much worth it. It also doesn't hurt to have a clear career path and interesting work. I live in Texas where winter months practically don't exist and unions are pretty rare. I only make about 15$/hr currently as a call center supervisor and pay for actual certified electrical apprentices start at 23$/hr. I'm either planning to move down closer to the valley/border so I can work as an industrial electrician or stay where I'm at and do maintenance or commercial.

I really do want to be a journeyman though so I'll keep studying.

Marvel Movie Timeline #3: Iron Man:
I remember really enjoying this movie when it came out, but this time around I kept hearing Pitch Meeting in the background, "Well, why would BBEG come up with such a convoluted and stupid plan when he could just do xxx?"

And that's about the size of it. It's a fairly solid movie throughout, except the BBEG really makes no sense if you start poking/pondering at all. Similarly, the final defeat of the BBEG is a, "Wait a minute! What just happened and how?" moment.

Didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I did the first time around. So 3 movies in, 23 to go, and Captain Marvel remains the leader. (At least until I hit Thor, I'm sure, since I recall really liking Thor.)

I'm in Houston, and my understanding is that general contractors and pretty much every adjacent field have more work than they can handle. It's just a generally busy time for the area with new housing being built all the time, and there's still work being done to recover from last year's winter storm, and there's STILL work being done to recover from the Hurricane Harvey flooding.

This evening I got my acceptance letter to the North Texas Master Naturalist certification program. I have to do a ton of Professional Development hours every year, so I figured it might as well be something I'm interested in. And my school will pay for it.

About to go home. Good night, everyone.

WW has never seen the real Cowboy Bebop, so of course he wanted to check out the new live-action series to see what all the fuss is about.
Now I'm trying to convince him the show actually has a plot and decent writing.

That sounds really interesting - what will you be studying exactly?

I know NH has problems with Windows Update messing with his WiFi, but I have a different issue. Occasionally, not every time but probably 25% of the time, when Windows updates, it deletes the .exe file for my antivirus program. Fixing it is pretty easy (go to uninstall the program, and it gives an option to "Repair" which fixes it in about 3 minutes), but it is really annoying and I can't think of any reason why it would do that.

Yes, it did just happen again, which is why I said anything.

That's probably the monthly malicious software removal patch. My guess is that something about your antivirus software has been flagged by Microsoft as a bad actor.

They haven't emailed us the syllabus yet. All I know is that the textbook is 781 pages long. The application was *almost* that long.

By my understanding she has to hang out at nude beaches for "a ton of hours every year".

Odd that her school would require that, but whatever floats their boat...

just burst through the door, tie him up, make some coffee for the IV drip, and marathon it.

It's what I would do.

That could make sense. Of course I've been using this software for 10 years or so, and this started happening about 6 months ago. So I wonder what changed?

That's when you pull a Hunter S. Thompson and just assume everyone else is out of place and everything you're doing is perfectly normal.

It would seem former coworker has packed it in for the year, a week earlier than usual. More hours for me I guess.

The final straw of the year for former coworker was having to build a natural stone planter wall around an elevated stamped concrete patio on the lakeshore. Which is apparently a big trigger for him.

I tried giving him advice but he didn't want to listen to any of it and is determined to shut down until it snows, which means I get to finish the walls before building the Stonehenge-esque outside bar. Which means I'll probably be working at least until Christmas, and that doesn't even account for whatever boulder the boss wants me to carve.

Which all sounds just wonderful to me!

Do you get to work alone? I always like being able to work alone on projects within my specialties...as long as it's safe.

Hopefully! If not alone then with one of the college kids I've been training. Either way it won't be so bad, except for the weather which isn't supposed to get above freezing all week (frozen tundra and all, but I expected that so I've been getting in all the base rock and compaction done this week).

It is nice working by myself and I often get to and I actually work quite efficiently by myself so the boss is more than willing to let me. Plus with my expansive knowledge he can send me anywhere to do anything and it'll get done with minimal complications or fuss.

For the record, I get it, it's hard to think in the cold, on a Friday and I have days like that where I know I'm not doing anyone any good. And it's Lannon Stone so it's already not the most attractive stone and he absolutely hates working past the first of December.

And I didn't tell the boss that he was in a mood and I gave him and his guy full credit for the stuff they did yesterday that looks great while also waiting until they left to tear down what they did today so the boss didn't get an angry email because it looked pretty bad.

We'll see if he comes in on Monday or if they're done for the year.

Finished working the first night of concessions at the theater for Hermione's Nutcracker weekend. After the intermission rush was over, I bailed the ice out of the wet bar with my bare hands because they didn't give us a scoop. Now I'm just waiting for final bows so I can take her home.

About to go home. Good night, everyone. And have a good weekend.

I just went running again for the first time since I pulled my hamstring at the beginning of September, because I've been too scared / too busy / too stressed / too lazy / all of the above.
Embarrassingly slow, but at least I got out there and did my miles. And I made it back just before the rain storm started up in earnest.

Well, they're not considered fully vaccinated until two weeks after the second shot.

But then they'll never need to wash their hands again!

Nice work! I lapsed in my exercising the week of Thanksgiving and haven't started back up. I need to get back on that horse.

I wanted to do myself properly bagel-wise today, so I had:

* The bagels
* The smoked salmon
* The dill
* The capers
* What I thought was the sour cream.

But it wasn't sour cream.

It was sour cream flavoured dip, which was mostly bloody mayonnaise.

Gah!!!!

On the flip side, I did do a grand job making cheesy potato fritters for ALL (DE) and the kids this morning (even if I do say so myself), so at least I've had something tasty to eat.

Bagel + Salmon + Dill and I'm on board right, but the rest... I cannot rightly imagine a world where I put capers on ANYTHING, much less sour cream of any sort on a sandwich.

Maybe I should give capers another shot now that Covid completely destroyed and rewrote my sense of smell and taste, now that I think about it, but my last experience with them literally had me gagging so I think I might just take extra precautions before I do so.

So in other news, we are all more-or-less okay, but were in a serious car accident today. A kid who shouldn't have been driving ran a red light and hit us square in the side at full speed. He was entirely fine, but felt horrible about it. I really worry about him and how this will affect his future. Poor guy.

Firedove is coherent and seems to be doing reasonably well, but has a pelvic fracture. The boys are doing relatively well, though Youngest had to get three stitches on his face and the Eldest had to briefly get an IV to get scanned (the scans revealed no real problems).

Our kids currently staying at neighbors and doing well; Firedove is in the hospital for at least the weekend; we will see about surgery or not (it's not currently known). I'm home and told to sleep, but it's difficult. Don't know how available I'll be for a bit as a result. If you're the praying type, please do.

Love you all!
