Complete change of topic, but more AP whining:
Last night's Mummy's Mask game was more of the "same old, same old" that's made the entire group decide that these are the last APs we'll ever run.

(1) More traps that aren't traps. "When you walk into this room, something bad happens, but it's not a trap so it has no Perception roll, no CR, and grants you no XP."
Happens over and over and over again in the APs. I think in the Lady's Light alone there were 4-5 such "non-traps", and at the end of Book 4 of Shattered Star there's another, really bad one.

If it's something where, "When the PCs approach, something bad happens to them," then it's a trap. Saying that it isn't so it can't be detected in any way just frustrates the PCs because it disempowers them. "Ha ha! You bought skills! They don't work! Lusr!"

(2) More doors that are impassable for no reason. "It takes the PCs 30 minutes to decipher the hieroglyphs on this door."
"But we speak the language, and I have Comprehend Languages up!"
"It doesn't matter. The Book says it'll take you 30 minutes to decipher the writing."
The sorcerer ended up using 5 Disintegrate spells to remove such doors because the players were so frustrated.

EDIT 2: (3) Monsters that simply appear and get full-round attacks. In the Lady's Light it was babaus, and a seugathi. In Mummy's Mask it was 3 flying archers who got full-round attacks in the surprise round (it was written in that they did), and every attack could paralyze a PC.

Just more, "It doesn't matter what spells you have, skills you bought, or anything else. The book says it doesn't work that way so nothing you do matters."

EDIT: Oh. Mike Shel wrote both of those books. So just one author making us decide to quit using APs.

I shouldn't have taken something so high stress, but I had to have something as soon as possible. My family, all of them, seems to understand.

I miss when I had a quiet job away from people where I could just plug away at my workload and mind my business.

I think the worst part is how much I hate myself for it. Tala's family all think I'm lazy or something. Like I do this on purpose. Like I actually enjoy feeling like I'm having a heart attack. And I even spend the next week just beating myself up and spiraling out of control about the repercussions after.

I'm trying to get a doctor and therapist down here, but Florida is much harder to get medicaid than Ohio. I found a place locally with good reviews, and we applied last week, so here's hoping.

damn. I'm sorry.

My brain keeps trying to read that as Hyperborea. Which may change your intended meaning.

Edit: But to be fair, I don't know that you aren't in a series of REH novellas.

Things I like about Fallout 76.

1. Photo Mode (I can't tell you how many pictures I have of me crouching in bushes, sleeping, or jamming on whatever instrument I find)

2. It has color

3. I'm learning their is very little difference between northern central Wisconsin and Appalachia

4. The thirst and hunger meters, I thought I'd hate them but I find it just immersive enough to not be annoying

5. It's online

6. The premise, I love that you're in a control vault and you're rushing out into the great unknown, I can't tell you how long I wore my party hat on the outside. I admit I can't stand the premise of Fallout 4 and it makes the game boring as f@~#, it's still the only Fallout game I haven't completed.

Jobs violate the rules all the time, man. It costs too much to litigate, so they only get caught when the violations are so easy to prove it's a joke, or tons of money to be made. This ain't a giant casino. There's literally four to a block of these s+!@ty wannabe gambling dens in South FL. I counted over twenty in PSL alone, with more from Vero down to Jensen - and that's just a two county area.

If I had a dollar for every company I've worked at, visited, or had a friend work at that broke a law, I'd be rich enough to not work for long enough to not care. The percentage is close enough to 100 to necessitate quite a few decimal points after that 99. Reporting violations usually results in no further punishment than a small fine, and then while they can't fire you openly for snitching, they CAN make up another excuse.

I'm not a lawyer, but isn't that a gross violation of the ADA? An employer is supposed to provide "reasonable accommodations". It seems like, "Having a sub ready in case VE has a panic attack," is extremely reasonable. Just seems wrong to me.

Mental health is not taken seriously enough down there - speaking if all of the south, rather than FL specifically - for that sort of thing to be considered at all. If VE had some physical issue that would pull him off the floor every 30 min or so, you can bet they'd at least provide him a chair.

But this? They likely think it's just made up mumbo jumbo trying to bilk out if work, because mental health is still treated in much of the US, especially the south, as essentially non-existent unless your disability completely incapacitates you from participating in society at all, like low functioning autism or late stage Alzheimer's.

The descriptions of Tala's family and how they're maligning VE thinking he's doing this on purpose to be lazy is fairly typical and commonplace in that culture, to the point where anyone expressing belief otherwise will probably be dismissed as a crank or an enabler. It's certainly what I heard and was told of such afflictions and those suffering them growing up in Texas: "anyone using mental health as an excuse or reason for not working is a lazy shifty bum who needs some responsibility beaten into them."

Hells, it was to the point that when I was diagnosed with my anxiety disorder my parents warned me never to tell any of the people at their church in TN, or they'd be all up in my case about not being in control of my emotions or not trusting god enough to keep depression and anxiety at bay and having to use medicine and therapy as a crutch or excuse to get out of personal responsibility.

They even had a "series" of "lessons" (read: sermons) on the scriptural view of mental health, and came to the "conclusion" listed above: either you were so mentally disabled you could never function as a sane adult, or you had no "real" issues at all, you were just lazy or avoidant and looking for an excuse, and just needed to learn to be responsible and/or trust god more to overcome your anxiety/depression/mania/etc.

Nothing in between allowed.

I'm spoilering this because of potential offense. If you read this and you are personally offended, PM me and we'll discuss. Politely.

You were warned:
As opposed to the crutch of faith to avoid any personal responsibility. "It's all God's plan." This drives me nuts. When it's happening to someone else, it gets blamed on the person it's happening to due to a lack of faith in their own twisted version of God. Or it's some lack of morality. When it happens to them, it's just all part of God's Divine Plan and not their own fault in any way. Nothing they could do, because God had a plan.

And yes, as Orthos said, even coming down to diseases of all types.

It's Free Will when it suits them, but also Divine Plan when it suits them.

Yeah, the rest of the country frequently mystifies me. I was just informed that at the RNC one of the speakers quite literally said, "If Biden wins, the rest of the country will become just like California, and nobody wants that!"

I guess we're just too liberal to know how miserable we all are or something...

Here is my right leaning perspective on California

Spoiler:

I like California to visit. But recently (well before C-19 recently) even that has been a burden. Seeing many of the admittedly touristy areas overrun with homeless and the appurtenant debris (human waste, drug paraphernalia, etc.) is difficult. The first time I saw someone taking a s+*+ in a flower pot in someone's yard, I was amused. The fourth and fifth time that trip...not as much. Having to watch my step because I wore tevas and was afraid of what I would step in grew tiresome. I understand that it is not everywhere. But it is where I was going for some of the recent trips.

Add in years of poor urban planning under democratic guidance which leads to heightened damage in natural disasters (whether it be fires on one hand or mudslides from too much rain on the other).

Add in egregiously expensive gas with horrific traffic.

Add in 1M dollar 1300 square feet homes on 2500 sq feet lots.

Yeah, no thank you. I may still visit, but now just to visit relatives or for work.

One rebuttal:

So, you're a lawyer. You should know the history here. We are constantly under siege from developers suing because open space laws, fire break requirements, zoning requirements, etc. are all unconstitutional because they interfere with the developers' ability to make money do business in the state. Housing development is a multi-billion-dollar industry here.

I'd be interested in a single reliable source placing the blame of our poor urban planning on "democratic guidance". I've lived here my whole life. It's anti-government developers supported by primarily Republican representatives in the rural districts who insist that laws requiring 100' of cleared space around houses built in the boonies are an undue burden on the homeowner. Both the mudslides and the fires are primarily in long-held Republican districts, but it's not political party; it's political attitude. "I'm nowhere near a city; I can do what I want with my property!"
"What? Natural disaster! The state has a duty to bail me out!"

Moar spoilering

Spoiler:

I understand that the mayor is not fully responsible for city planning, but in my experience (admittedly not in CA), the leanings of the mayor are usually pretty typical of the rest of the city council including urban planning. Using this as a loose proxy.

Pulled from wikipedia (not perfect, but not horrible for historical stuff like party affiliation)
LA republican mayors 93-01, 33-61. Rest democrats
San diego - more republican than democrat
San Fran - 31-64 republican. democrat since.
malibu - under LA generally, nationally vote democratic, can't find party for mayor list
Tahoe - republican as far as I can tell
Manhattan Beach - under LA generally, nationally vote democratic, can't find party for mayor list
santa barbara - can't find party affiliations on mayor list, but I am betting more democrat based on my experience with my relatives there

You mention lawsuits. Yes, they occur. But CA has managed to make CARB stick despite the ENTIRE oil/gas industry efforts to undermine through litigation. My simple minded conclusion - a lack of political will on the part of the city planners (who by proxy appear more democratic than republican) leads to the overdevelopment.

And no, the politicians cannot control the weather, but better city planning and/or fire ordinances would alleviate the impact of such weather on these overdeveloped areas. I have enough civil engineering credits to know that.

I appreciate that this is not the view of a native, but the original inquiry was 'what's wrong with us?' To an outsider, that is what is wrong.

V.E., I'm so sorry. My sister Eve went through the same thing a while back, at her favorite job ever, working for an electric motorcycle company. They ridiculed her because of it and then forced her out because "she couldn't cut it". She felt stabbed in the back. There was no legal recourse for her, either, so she started doing pills for the anxiety to feel better, and then we just lost her for a few years. It was very hard to know there was no way we could help her. In the end, the thing that "saved" her was having her daughter.

Hugs, my friend. There is no easy way through this, but, holy crap, we're here with you.

About to go home. Good night, everyone.

While not the same issue, there are also union issues that have made some people afraid to do things outside their specific job responsibilities.

Umm, that is not your job. The union guy has to do that.
But it was just a light bulb, I think I can do that on my own.
Doesn't matter. Have a two day unpaid suspension.
Umm, you're joking right?
No. Rules is rules. Only an approved union member can change light bulbs.
...

That example may be apocryphal, but I have heard enough similar stories to believe that there is a bit of truth behind them.

Oh, I was doing an onsite at a military contractor that was a tight union shop. The flipboard was on the wrong side of the classroom. I picked it up to move it and the entire class hissed at me that I couldn't do that because it was a union job and I could be fined $800 if the union found out I'd done a union job without permission.

So I asked, "How long will it take a union guy to get here and move the flipboard across the room for me?"
"About 45 minutes."
"You're paying me $1000 an hour. We don't have time for that kind of nonsense."

I moved the flipboard anyway, but it obviously made the employees extremely uncomfortable. So yeah, there are definitely some union rules around that are both ridiculous and extremely aggressively enforced.

(I can agree with, "Employees shall not move any object weighing over xx pounds," because it's a liability issue. But a 2-pound flipboard? No. Just, no.)

I have a friend that had a union job at a power plant. You took that union hand book like it was the Gospel.

I've been playing a lot of Ark: Survival Evolved lately. Minecraft plus Jurassic Park with a twist.

I like it.

My fiance has like 600 hours+ on that game. I played it considerably less but I still like it.

I might have to pick it up during the next sale. How is the single player aspect of it. I don't do multiplayer anymore, so SP is more my style.

she played it multiplayer and 600+ I played it single player for about 40-80 hours and may play it some more later. I had to tinker with the options and setting to speed up the game play a bit too. If you don't it can be grindy. Their is a lot of cool stuff to it though. Rideing around on a Rex or bronto (which you can make a whole base on mind you) is a lot of fun. however I did die like 15 times in a row when I first started it. Survival right in the beginning is very hard. But when you get to start taming megaladons mosasaurus spinosarusus etc it can be pretty fun.
