A well-dressed gentleman was walking down the street and saw an elderly man sitting on the sidewalk with a fishing line in a small puddle of water in the street. "The poor old fool," thought the man. "I'll do something nice for him." So, he invited the old man to join him for a glass of scotch in the pub. The old man accepted, and they went inside. As they sipped their drinks, the gentleman asked politely "Well, old timer, how many did you catch today?" The elderly man smiled and said "Well, sir, you make eight."

I told my wife I was thinking of buying an expensive watch.
"How expensive," she asked.
"Oh, about $25,000" I answered.
"What!" she screeched. "You could buy a car for that!"
"Well that seems excessive." I replied. "I really don't think a watch has any use for a car."

My son's math teacher joined the group chat today and posted a picture of a chalk board with a tiny number 7 written on it. I thought it was a little odd.

Operations: Yeah, but it's fine. It's just easier this way.

Vany, 6 years ago: It's not fine, it's going to be a compliance audit issue, and eventually one person is going to lock it out. They'll want to talk to whoever that account is registered to in order to fix that, and if that person isn't available you're all going to be hosed.

Vany, off and on for the ensuing years: You still haven't gotten that account situation fixed, huh?

Operations, today: Hey, we can't get in to that client's SFTP server!

One of Vany's Techs: Yeah, from the errors you're getting it sounds like that account is locked out. You'll need to call the client to deal with that since it's their system.

Operations: Hey, they're saying they can't talk to me. The account is registered to someone I've never heard of before. They're saying they need to confirm the identity of that person!

(Turns out the account was registered to a former employee of ours who left the company about 8 years ago.)

Operations: Vany, can you or one of your techs talk to them and get this straightened out for us? Please?

Vany: No.

Sheesh.

And if support finally stops, you will still get complaints.

Things that make a dad/former teacher want to commit homicide:

So, not only did Impus Major's math teacher assign a homework assignment due at the end of the week, but she also provided TWO extra credit assignments, also assigned this week and due at the end of the week.

Because worrying about final exams isn't enough. You need an extra-large load of homework for the week as well.

(Impus Major was so stressed he just collapsed last night. I'm so stressed I was up at 3:40 this morning. And that was BEFORE I saw the announcements about the extra assignments.)

Shiro looked up the teacher on one of those "rate your professor" web sites and she has terrible ratings. Hard grader. Excessive homework.

And the real killer: Students responding to the poll on her had a 3.5 GPA in other math classes, and a 2.5 GPA in her math class.

So yeah, she manages to drop students by a full letter grade because of her harsh policies and grading.

And having gone over Impus Major's last two midterms, I can concur. On Midterm 2 he showed 92% understanding, but had a lot of dumb errors. I put on my professor hat, graded as harshly as I could imagine, and gave him a 65%. She gave him a 54%.

On Midterm 3 the problems were rated right or wrong, period. He lost 15% on a calculus test because he accidentally put (8-0)/(16-0) = 1/8. The rest of the page-long problem was correct. So one tiny little algebraic mistake was 1 1/2 letter grades.

He'll pass the class based on homework and extra credit, but just barely. And he understands all the concepts. She just is a "black and white, right or wrong" kind of math teacher.

Exactly the kind you (rightfully) hate.

OK. I'm impressed.

Target run complete.

Customers adhered to masks and social distancing and were not jerks, which is more than you expect from most customers.

Staff was out-and-out friendly.

Obtained a 9-pack of Charmin for $11.99, only a 20% markup over its non-pandemic price.

All in all, Target gets good marks for having the floors clearly marked to enforce social distancing and having everything well organized.

Next... Costco!

(And yes, it's Day 65 of the lockdown and my very first trips to box stores since it started. Which kind of indicates the kind of guy I am: "Buy a ton so you don't have to deal with going to the store for a couple of months, use it up, go restock."

9 rolls of TP won't get me very far, but I'm hoping Costco'll have a 36-pack I can grab. The only reason I bought the 9-pack was in case Costco was bare.

So, y'know those pictures of the Florida beaches flooding with people packed in like sardines as the state re-opens? Apparently, that's Costco in California.

The parking lot was even more full than most weekends. People were wandering aimlessly through the parking lot like post-apocalyptic zombies. I did not go in. I did not roll down my windows. I didn't even unlock my door.

I just drove away...

So,
I paid $$ to get all 11 remaining trees in my backyard cut down, (mostly because wife was afraid they would fall over and take out our or our neighbors house. To be fair, it IS an early start to hurricane season, but anyway)

Not 10 minutes after the guys drove off, I had squirrels on the back fence looking at the stumps and they were all like,
"WhatTheF@#$ did you DO?!?!"
"Well, THERE goes the neighborhood!"

That's Costco everywhere.

You should see the one in Middleton!

I hate Costco.

Edit: I drove by last weekend and they had a line stretching around the block, no social distancing whatsoever.

The kicker is, while they're out of everything I can go to the neighborhood Target and get whatever I need, without a line and without anyone in my personal space (what us old timers used to call social distancing).

How you know I’ve gone irrevocably down the bread-baking rabbit hole:

While baking the husband’s birthday cake this afternoon, I looked down at the bowl and thought “Ugh, this dough is way too runny. It’s like soup! I’ll never be able to knead this. I must have gotten the recipe wrong.” It took me a hot minute to remember that it is not dough, it’s cake batter, and it is supposed to be wet.

2 months ago, bread-baking still intimidated me. A lot changes in quarantine.

She helped aerate and smooth out the concrete and then helped dig out a thirty foot stretch for a walkway (which we dig down a foot).

I even gave her the opportunity to ride with me to dump a load of dirt and she stayed behind to dig.

There are few things that enrage me more than teachers lying to their students about how "real life" is. From algebra teachers saying, "You're going to use this every day for the rest of your life," to English teachers telling you that you can't get a job without being able to write a properly-formatted 5-paragraph essay, teachers constantly lie to kids about what the real world is like.

And the kids know it. And lose all respect for the teacher. At which point the teacher can no longer be effective.

Today's case in point: Impus Major's English teacher went off on a tirade about how in the "real world" you couldn't just ask for a 1-week extension because "that's not how the real world works".

Er... I work in a department with over 150 writers who make in the neighborhood of six figures (some more, some less). If their managers said, "If you can't meet this deadline no matter what, you're fired," we'd be finding 150 new writers because ours would have all quit.

Right now I'm on a 2-week extension for my project. Because I asked for it. It's what happens in the "real world".

If you stick to artificial deadlines and never allow extensions for any reason, you get Windows ME.

THAT'S how the "real world" works.

EDIT: Even at Impus Major's school, two of his teachers asked and got 1-week extensions before they started their online classes. So EVEN THIS TEACHER'S FRICKING JOB ALLOWS IT.
So don't go telling kids it doesn't happen "in the real world". Grr...

Hell, most of the time the extension isn't even asked for. People just blow the deadlines anyway.

What system would you guys use for a gritty, street level supers game? Where the government is hunting the PCs for unknown reasons, and they're constantly on the run and hiding?

Power level is like "rip a car door off with one arm", "run about 100mph" or equivalent, depending on powers.

Not that I could run one with the baby keeping us busy, but I sometimes brainstorm future game ideas and do some writing while I'm watching the vagrant infantite.

Shadowrun, Heroes Unlimited, or Nightbane (or Nightspawn, I forget which name they got sued for using and had to switch).

I've noticed that if you have your shipping set to cheapest possible you'll run into all sorts of glitches that try to break things up into multiple shipments, whereas I've had my shipping set to priority mail for about a year and a half without any glitches.

I'd say that's worth the extra money.

We had good success with 150-point builds in Champions and a generally-accepted, "Don't take powers that would break the feel of the game".

But it was definitely a group of players who loved to play with "theme builds" instead of optimized builds, so you have to trust your group to behave.

Marvel Super Heroes Roleplaying. I believe there were brackets for power levels to determine level of play. You could also disallow certain more powerful "classes", like alien or robot.

I would strongly recommend a mutant "class" game, as that had many built in flaws to balance the power level of the average mutant, which is why so many mutants had to learn 'power stunts' to make their powers more useful, as opposed to other "classes" that simply had a bevy of different powers.

While I find Marvel Super Heroes easy to play, it is a slightly absurd system with some of its rules, especially with respect to physical strength levels, size differences between opponents, and martial art abilities, so be ready for that.
