I'm torn between "yay I get the house to myself for two weeks, I can have a few days of blissful stress reduction from not having to listen to Fox News rhetoric and Trump soundbites" and "this is incredibly stupid, stubborn, and risky, they are not taking the pandemic at all seriously, at best they only risk themselves and me when they get back, at worst they put my brother, SIL, and nieces and their extended family at risk also".

You'd think the first cancellation would have been a clue, but the second was divine intervention.

Drive out there and bring your folks back. Tell them you will let them listen to Trumps Trumps greatest speeches on the way home.

You dont want to lose them to something THIS avoidable.

Just spent the better part of a day yelling at two peoole on my caseload who got this by being incredibly STUPID.

I had that conversation with Mom last night. She mostly agreed (other than insisting that, at 59, she and Dad were no greater at risk than me at 35, all other factors being the same) but Dad has been insistent and when he puts his foot down Mom complies. The fact that she got him to agree to a "three strikes we're out" measure if their flight gets cancelled again is about the only consolation he's willing to give.

Your dad's brain makes me want Nervous Breakdown Peeps Chili.

Gee...

I'm 52 and we've canceled Disneyland in April (well, it's closed), Disneyland in May (may still be closed), and Ashland in June (they just closed). So yeah, we've already canceled ALL of our travel plans through June, and we haven't made any reservations for July yet because we want to see how long this keeps going.

The idea that people are still willingly flying around on commercial flights right now is... baffling...

CHAIR RACES!!!!

(Yes, there's nothing like being a grad student grading 800 finals at 1:00 am on cold pizza and flat beer, and all deciding that it's time to have chair races/jousts all over the 6th floor of the math building.)

FOr the entire week, the wife (the usually long-suffering eternally understanding Mrs Wizard) despite her having entered 'Paranoia stage Defcon 5 & 1/2', has drug me outside for a walk through the neighborhood, (while we chat while playing the 'Harry Potter Wizards Unite' game on our phones)

So yeah, I get the last laugh.

So what did I miss?

My updates:

I'm trying to create a tulpa, but so far I'm not hallucinating it, so it's just an imaginary friend.

Homunculus #2 walked in on Mrs Sunrise and I, so now he and Homunculus #1 have another thing in common.

I expected to be laid off by now for corporate merger reasons, but now I'm being told I may have my job until September or so.

Given that I'm essential personnel in an essential industry, this is probably a good thing even though I was hoping to have a new job by now.

Mrs. Sunrise is super anxious about protecting me from corona, due to my preexisting condition, every time I say "I'm gonna go out to do X" she says "No, I'll do X for you!"

There is probably a way to turn this volunteerism to my benefit and/or amusement...

I probably should be more worried about corona, but I'm still in a "this is sooo surreal..." phase.

I am terribly meh about my nearest store so I prefer going farther to get better groceries. I haven't been in the closest store to me in... I think I was once or twice there last year, maybe.

Came in to work tonight and had an interesting discussion with the general manager. The hotel is "closing" on April 1. Technically, it will still be open, but all reservations are being transferred to our sister property next door. Apparently they're going to go through and prep the hotel like it's being closed, including turning off power to the guest rooms, draining the pool (which they've already done), and various other things. The GM is being furloughed. The AGM was given the option of being laid off or switching to hourly. She choose to be laid off. The managers from next door will be watching over us here. The last housekeeper and the maintenance guy are being laid off. But us desk clerks get to keep working. We have to show up and be here to handle phone calls, try to get a hold of people with reservations to tell them to go next door, and just keep a presence so the place isn't abandoned. He said I should still get my 40 hours, but I'll basically be doing nothing. Even more nothing than I usually do. That will be very boring, but at least I'm still working.

These two years away from my family have shown me how important they are.

For our daughter, because both our families are there, and family support is so helpful in parenting, we are planning on moving back to Florida when we can afford it. We're already searching for jobs and apartments.

The things you do for your kids that you NEVER would have done before...

(Btw for those wondering, she eats like a voracious milk gobbling monster, is healthy as all get out, and looks more like me than her mom with each day.)

And not even in the same order of magnitude (or three) of VE's issues, but I'm at the other end: How much can we afford to give away to keep people afloat right now, and how much do we have to save in case one of our companies goes under?

A good example is the hotel in Ashland. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival just got canceled until September, so the family has decided to cancel the trip. We pre-paid for a nice hotel there. We *can* get our money back, and I don't even think it's morally questionable whether or not we should do it, but it still really hurts to say, "Sorry. We're cancelling our June reservations and yes, we're going to take the refund because we're working on donating to our local businesses to keep them afloat."

There's so much need right now, and so little I can do, it's hard.

The whole concept of paying bail is also mind blowing to me.
What part is confusing? It is designed to make sure that you appear in court for your actual trial. If you do not so appear, then you forfeit the bail. Since it is usually secured by property or a bail bond issued by a bondsman, you have a strong incentive to appear.

I think the confusing part is letting people go in the first place.

Suppose I go out and commit a random murder, because the lockdown is driving me stir crazy. Up until that moment, I've been a fine, upstanding citizen. I have a family and a home in the area. The judge sets my bail at $1 million, and I put up my house as collateral. Well, my brain has already snapped, and the house no longer means anything to me, so I just wander off, never to be seen again, and free to commit another murder if I feel like it.

I think that's her confusion. The judge is trying to make a judgement call, "Is it safe to release this person on bail?", and sometimes they're wrong.

I think what people miss is that for petty crimes, it's quite effective. I shoplifted $500 worth of stuff. Bail is set at $1000. I'd be an idiot to skip bail.

EDIT: The issue is that people accused of violent crimes can frequently make bail. That baffles most people.

Yeah, its like you pay to get (temporarily) out of jail.

Using your example, if you commited that random murder here, we'd keep you in jail untill your trial time. That time is usually then substracted from your sentence.

So you get arrested, it takes one week to get you to trial. Your crime is minor, and you get a fine and 2 months of jail time. Your actual jail time would then be 7 weeks, as the week before your trial is substracted.

When I was a kid (back before even VCRs) I would get so excited when the Saturday morning movie was It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. I think I managed to see it 3-4 times, just because their repertoire was so small. (A bunch of Abbott & Costello movies, a lot of Three Stooges, and then a bit of whatever Zero Mostel happened to be in at the moment, because in all likelihood the programmer was a fan.)

EDIT: And now I am sad. Zero wasn't *in* It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
Still loved his stuff, though!

We, rightly or wrongly, still presume innocence and thus try not to incarcerate our citizens before we at least nominally jump through the hoops to convict them. That said, we will bend all sorts of rules to convict people, pressure them into wrongful confessions, or otherwise work to keep our private industry prison companies at full capacity (with the added benefit that it lowers unemployment numbers).

That said, we will bend all sorts of rules to convict people, pressure them into wrongful confessions, or otherwise work to keep our private industry prison companies at full capacity (with the added benefit that it lowers unemployment numbers).

If you're not guilty, the police dont have the right to hold you that long. Depending on evidence when you get arrested, you can be held either 6 or 9 hours maximum. If they want to hold you longer then that, they have to provide new evidence, at which your incarecation can be extended. This can be done to a maximum of 3 days, and then extended another 3 days.

There are a lot of legal terms I'm not going to subject to a google translate as that will f$!+ it up.

Lets take NHs muder example. He blew it and murdered a random person. Shot him, threw away the gun.
Police suspect him, as people saw someone with his description flee the scene of the crime and he has no aliby. They take him in for questioning and search his house. During this they find clothes with gun powder residue on them.
They present this evidence to a judge, who authorises to extend NH's arrest up to 3 days, since it looks like he might be the perpetrator, but there is no definitive evidence yet.

These two years away from my family have shown me how important they are.

For our daughter, because both our families are there, and family support is so helpful in parenting, we are planning on moving back to Florida when we can afford it. We're already searching for jobs and apartments.

The things you do for your kids that you NEVER would have done before...

(Btw for those wondering, she eats like a voracious milk gobbling monster, is healthy as all get out, and looks more like me than her mom with each day.)

that poor kid!

I think I will go with the simple truth that foreigners are foreign. That's not how our system works.
