Did the author explicitly stated that the wraith in question ignores the miss chance? They might simply assumed that the risk of 50% chance with one re-roll (wraiths have Blind-Fight featnorally) is worth the protection offered by the wall.

Good = I will not beat people up just for doing their jobs if I can figure out a way around it. Harming others is bad.

Lawful = The law of the land says they're in the right, so I shouldn't fight them.

I'm not conflating the two concepts; I'm just pointing out that they both lead to the same, "We shouldn't fight if we can avoid it," conclusion.

Beating government employees up, looting them, and leaving them in their skivvies back in their home office is neither good nor lawful, though it frequently feels as if it should be.

From what you described these are bounty hunters, not police officers. Someone is operating extralegally here, I'm not sure who, though.

They are defeated and trussed securely, not bleeding out.

If the alternative is to let them beat you up for extralegal ends, that is not lawful or good, but stupid. Which is often what lawful and good ends up being.

Tacticslion wrote:
Yeah, we're doing good! Freehold ninja'd my own question! Be safe!

Unless we take a glancing or direct hit, we should be ok here. We're about 140 miles south of Tampa as the crow flies. When it exits the western coast of the state, we'll probably get some erosion and storm surge along the coast and barrier islands. We've gotten a lot of rain in the past couple weeks, so we'll probably get some flooding even away from the coast in the areas with poor drainage/waterflow, alot of it due to the Army Corp of Engineers and land developers mucking up the natural waterflow during the housing boom in the 40s/50s.

American/NOAA models are predicting a central/northern Florida path. The European models are predicting a more southerly course. It's still too soon to know where it's going, although they seem to agree it'll be Cat 4 when it hits.

Wherever it goes, a bunch of people are going to get pounded. The bright spot is Puerto Rico got spared from it.

Weird. I don't have the AP and haven't gone in the forum; I asked simply because I've had help on trouble spots in other modules and APs in the forums that way (I even got corrected stats for a goofed up monster once). I'm sorry that happened to you, that really sucks.

Quote:
I'm putting in all the workarounds I need; I have many years of homebrew behind me. But if I have to rewrite sections of the AP because they punish good roleplayers, change monsters around because the as-written ones will just upset and frustrate me and my players, and have to learn alternative rulesets because the AP authors didn't like the delivered ones, then... er... why am I paying for an AP instead of just writing my own?

I absolutely HATE it when an adventure creates more work for me than less. And I firmly believe adventures should exist to save GMs work, not create it. Anyone that fails to do so is a failure of an adventure IMO. (Don't get me started on chapter 3 of the module Plunder and Peril. Which is frustrating because the IDEA of what they were trying to do with that module was a really good one, but the specific adventure had a lot of flaws that affected its popularity/sales, so they never tried the concept again) I am right on board with you. My only concern is the implication that the designers are doing it on purpose to "change" the rules and/or be frustrating. Normally it involves oversights, often by writers who are focused on the story they want to tell rather than the mechanics (particularly an issue when an adventure designer is more of a fiction writer than a GM), and I am saying that because I know for a fact that when such issues are pointed out during development/production, they are usually resolved. The problem is when they don't get caught. It sounds like there wasn't enough senior dev oversight on the AP--and I wonder if it was being worked on at the time that Paizo had a lot of staff turnover going on. And again, that really, really sucks. And if my clarifying any of this is just making you feel like I'm discounting your entirely justified frustration, then I apologize; please just ignore me.

Again sorry for your frustration, and I hope if you keep running that AP subsequent chapters are better.

Huh. I interpreted any pretentiousness on the show as entirely tongue-in-cheek. Never felt talked down to, personally. But then, I am a giant food history nerd, so basically a food history show that features comedic antics by Sue Perkins is more or less "here's a show we made just for DeathQuaker" so I am likely to forgive its flaws.

Never saw that, unfortunately. Don't get a lot of those kind of things transported over to the U.S. (It's hard enough to find Supersizers, but it at least WAS on Hulu if not still is.) I know she and Mel Giedroyc go way back as professional partners, which is evident in the comedic chemistry they have as presenters on Bake Off.(Noel and Sandi, though obviously lovely people, don't click in the same way.)

Sue's short lived sitcom Heading Out was entertaining, although there was a lot of cringe humor I struggled to get through (though that type of humor is common on Britcoms).

Contrary to NobodysHome conviction about widespread docking stations and external keyboards, not all laptop users use external keyboards. It could be the tape connecting the keyboard to motherboard that is failing...

Interestingly the issue does not seem to reappear for now... Could it be some sort of interference from LotRO with the keyoboard? We'll see.

It could be that some dust got under those specific keys and repeated pressing caused to move the dust out of the way - that would explain why the keys that misbehaved work now.

It gets worse before it gets better, but stick with it. IIRC the next several episodes are frustrating. But personally I liked how everything ultimately ended, but it's a brutal ride. (This is better than season 2, where it was a brutal ride and then I hated the ending.)

Just finished my loot spreadsheet for the next section of Strange Aeons:

Total wealth assuming the PCs loot and sell everything: 143,112.5 gp
Total wealth if the PCs don't steal from their employer: 20,820 gp

I now await Freehold's argument as to why it's perfectly OK for good-aligned PCs to steal from their good-aligned employers.

(Not really. It's tongue-in-cheek. But *SIGH*. The "random NPC walks up and hands you unfathomable amounts of cash" trope is quickly catching up to the, "In this AP, a banshee pops out of nowhere with no foreshadowing and screams at the party" trope. Clearly there is something missing from the description of the situation, but this AP may be so poorly written that that is EXACTLY what happens. I was waiting for more info from NH on that wrinkle, but he hasn't really responded yet.

I think it's a coastal thing. Freehold doesn't bother me at all, because I know it's meant as affectionate tweaking. Yet the guy who basically said, "Man up and be a real GM" really insulted me.

I don't mind Freehold's proddings. Because it lets me give him more spoiler than he wants to read. :-P

Strange Aeons Stuff:

Encounter #1: A Faith Barge. In this case, Freehold is (somewhat) in the right. The PCs and their NPC captain pay the tithe in town, and are then intercepted by a barge claiming that they didn't. *IF* they allow the tithe-takers on board, it's an automatic fight so there's no question, because the tithe-takers are corrupt. But before the tithe-takers come on board, the PCs have over a minute to decide what to do. The captain told the PCs that the tithe-takers probably wouldn't take, "No," for an answer.
The solution that hurts the fewest people is what my group did: Control Water on the barge, and then buh-bye as the barge was stuck motionless for over an hour. I don't know that intentionally sticking around to fight corrupt government tax collectors is necessarily Good or Lawful, but it's certainly not evil.

I just feel that it's more in line with the Good definition of "altruism, respect for life, and a concern for the dignity of sentient beings" to make a choice to NOT beat them stupid. "We can leave without incident, so we should leave without incident," is a perfectly reasonable decision to me.

Encounter #2: A government executioner. The government of Galt convicted a senator of treason and sentenced him to death, then sent an executioner to carry out the sentence. The PCs can either beat up the lawfully-appointed representative of the current government, or they can cast Dimension Door, escape to the ship with the senator, and leave. Or they can just turn the senator in.
I think beating up the executioner because you oppose the death penalty is neither Lawful nor Good.

Encounter #3: The PCs are asked by a group of librarians to please deal with the horrors that have infested the library, and to bring back the body of the head librarian so he can be raised. And yep, even the head librarian's gear is considered "loot".
"Yes, ma'am, we brought him back to you. But his gear was, er, 'missing' somehow."
Not good at all. Not lawful at all.

You're making some weird assumption that the PCs are supposed to allow themselves to get beat up.

They can just leave. They don't have to fight at all. In fact, they're on a river journey so it is tactically advantageous and easier to leave than it is to stay and fight a bunch of pointless thugs.

Yet if they don't fight, they lose out on almost all of the loot in the AP.

EDIT: I was going to go on a big, angry tirade here, but it's FaWtL, so I'll be mellow:
An angry child walks up to a 20th-level paladin and says, "I hate you! You put my father in jail! I'm going to beat you up!"

Stating that the paladin's only two possible choices are to either
(a) Beat up the child and take his things, or
(b) Allow himself to be beat up because 'Lawful Stupid'
is a fundamentally false dichotomy.

My PCs come up with clever ways to escape conflict. I am extremely unfond of writing that punishes them harshly for their ingenuity.

It really doesn't come across as affectionate today, at least to me. But I've been dealing with BS from people with regards to gaming all day so my patience is more than shot.

Yes, I'm a terrible person.

Countdown to fifty: t minus 21 days.

Chickens come home to roost...

WW: Hey! I got my AARP card in the mail yesterday! I just paid them twelve bucks for the first year!
Me: Yeah, I know. (Laughs evilly.)
WW: Just wait; you'll get your card soon.
Me: Yeah, in five more years.
WW: Nope. I had the option to sign up my spouse for free.
Me: [redacted]

Which brings me in to ask the question. What alignment does the SA AP assume that the party holds? CN, CE, or NE? My opinion is that the AP is meant for a party of Chaotic Evil characters.

Paizo APs, unless written for a specific exception (like Wrath of the Righteous leans towards LG, Hell's Vengeance towards LE, etc.), tend to assume the party is CG, or at least CG-friendly.

But as NH has pointed out on many occasions, SA seems to keep assuming the PCs are willing to do non-good acts to make money and keep up with expected wealth. So... I'm guessing any of those three would work nicely, but I guess the default would be CN since it's not explicitly an evil campaign?
