As long as I'm doing Grumpy Old Man complaining.

NobodysHome: You need to be completely ready to go by 10:00 am. Got it?
Family Member: Got it!
NH: This means that we are walking out the door at exactly 10:00 am, so no putting on shoes, no bathroom, no grabbing your backpack. Seriously. We are walking out the door, I'm walking to the car, and I'm driving away.
FM: Got it!

10:00 am sharp:
NH: OK! I'm going!
FM: Wait just a sec! I need to use the bathroom, put on my shoes, and grab my backpack!

Yes, said family members have missed rides because I've responded, "Well, then, I'm not going; you're on your own."

On the bright side, the kids get apologetic rather than angry.
On the dark side, even contemplating trying something like that with GothBard strikes fear into my soul.

But I swear, when you tell someone, "I am going to open the front door and walk out at 10:00 am sharp," they respond, "That's fine, I'll be ready," and then they aren't, I get really upset far beyond how much I should. But it's yet another, "Oh, you told me that was going to happen and it happened? What?" moment.

EDIT: And no matter what Lisamarlene says, I'm not like that with *everything*. It's the usual: The family member has a class, reservation, flight, or other event where punctuality is actually important. Then I try to pad the departure time to plan for the delay in leaving, and I get, "But it only takes 12 minutes to drive to xxx? Why are you planning 20? I'm not going to be ready to leave by then!"
So you plan the 12, because that's what they asked for, then you try to walk out the door at 12 and they're STILL not ready, so you don't leave 'til 9 or 10, they're late, and they complain that YOU got them to their destination late.

No, no *I* didn't.

All the Other Managers: Nope!
NHM: Please let all your reports know to stay off of it until recording is complete.
AtOM: Done!

(Wednesday morning NobodysHome logs on to setup. All of a sudden, after a week and a half of nothing, there are a dozen obvious changes to the environment)
NobodysHome: Hey, xxx! This environment was reserved! Why are you in it?
Perpetrator: Oh! Sorry! I forgot!

And yes, being at Global Megacorporation, he will face no consequences whatsoever for nearly ruining two weeks of setup. (I caught him in time.)

Spoiler:

One of my theories is The Lady is a super-evolved Janet, perhaps gone a bit wrong. The Dabuses are Dareks with their speech replaced by the rebuses (Darek+Rebus=Dabus).

On who is who equivalents, though:
The Good Place folks are a lying but charming jerk on the run from Hell, a rogue construct, an often incomprehensible philosopher, conniving thieving (Arizona) trash, a fallen socialite with a posh accent, and a deranged pyromaniac.

(Michael, Janet, Chidi, Eleanor, Tahani, Jason)

The Nameless One's companions are a lying but charming jerk on the run from Hell, a rogue construct, an often incomprehensible philosopher, conniving thieving (Hiver) trash, a fallen socialite with a posh accent, and a deranged pyromaniac.

(Morte, Nordom, Dakkon, Annah, Grace, Ignus)

Vhailor's a stretch, but he thinks he is Judge Jury and Executioner and Judge Gen is THE Judge.

The Good Place folks are striving to escape the Bad Place. The Nameless One created his situation by trying to escape infernal punishment (which he then has to reverse).

the Good Place:
I hadn't gotten to that part yet, but as my personal ship was always Chidi/Eleanor anyway, so it works for me. It also serves as parallelism for the show structure.

I was kind of interested in the whole monk ascetic Tahani - it felt good for her character, but it obviously didn't work. Still, I just don't feel her in any real romances. They all feel superficial.

Trevor and Jason, though. They just... they get along so well. And Jason seems like he would potentially thrive in a poly relationship. (I don't, however, think Janet would be okay with it, and Jason just seems to really like Trevor instead of being romantic with him. Of course, Jason is bad at romance as a concept most of the time anyway.)

I've always felt Vicky ("the Real Eleanor") was a character who warranted something more. She and Tahani might work out well together, if anyone.

I do like Simone, however, andhope she stays in the show for more than the first three episodes!

Ya know, I think you just helped nail down a concept I've been working on for a Starfinder character (you know, for all those Starfinder campaigns GMs are beating down my door to join*). Don't want to be Janet per se, but I'd been wanting to do some kind of perky android and was thinking Mystic but wasn't sure what devotion... I think if she goes Akashic Record, her goal would be to provide people with whatever information they need.

I'd also tried statting out Janet as a Pathfinder (1e) extraplanar construct. Needs some work tho.

That sounds pretty delightful! What about using an inevitable as a base, for the Constructed traits? (I don't know - you might just want to stick with an actual construct, it's just what occurred to me.)

No, no *I* didn't.

You aren't overreacting. They are underreacting.

Punctuality matters. Staying true to your word matters.

If you let little s!~$ slide as a person, then people think it's okay to get away with bigger stuff. The old addage "give them an inch and they take a mile" is damn near universally true with humanity. This is why the world is full of flakes who overcommit.

The very fact most of you reading this likely disagree with me and think my attitude is too much is proof. I don't think you are a flake, by any means, readers, but our society has belittled inconveniencing others to such a degree it sickens me. (Related - parents who tune out their whining kids in public making others who chose not to have kids for a reason suffer through the negative aspects of your choice to have a child - take them outside, lazy asses.)

It's not that hard to keep your word. Don't say what you don't mean. Don't flippantly make promises. Then when you DO say something, do it.

Frankly, NH, I think you're a cooler dude every time I read your rants.

I'm getting more and more fed up with Strange Aeon's approach to wealth.

Strange Aeons spoilers:
In Book 3, you were supposed to fight, kill, and loot all the government representatives who were trying to shake you down, from faith collectors in Razmiran to government-appointed bounty hunters in Galt. My good-aligned PCs were having serious issues, and figured out clever ways to avoid killing government appointees so as to NOT TICK OFF THE GOVERNMENTS THEY WERE GOING THROUGH. Lawful PCs would have had an even worse time of it.

And the book's entire approach was, "No kill government employees = No loot." If you were clever and avoided confrontation, your total loot for levels 7-10 was 23,000 gold. Total. For 4 PCs. Leaving around 80,000 to rot.

Then in Book 4 you're supposed to investigate a man's house. There are signs he's been taken against his will. So once again, good-aligned or Lawful PCs don't loot, and the total loot from the house is 0. Missing out on another 72,000.

Then some librarians ask you to explore a problem in their library. If you don't LOOT THE LIBRARY OF THE PEOPLE WHO HIRED YOU, you miss out on another 100k.

So, from levels 7-12, the AP makes roughly 250,000 gold in loot dependent on the PCs being willing to rob their hosts. If they're unwilling to do this, over those five level-ups the players get a grand total of 55,000 gold.

So, I'm not a big believer in Wealth by Level. But Poverty for Being A Decent Person is far, far worse.

I was kind of interested in the whole monk ascetic Tahani - it felt good for her character, but it obviously didn't work. Still, I just don't feel her in any real romances. They all feel superficial.
I'm willing to compromise. I'll give up on Tahani + Eleanor if I can have Tahani + Sue Perkins instead.

Jameela Jamil AND Sue Perkins? Now I'M in my Good Place.

For those unfamiliar with Sue, if you want to see Sue Perkins outside of the first 5 or so seasons of Bakeoff, look up a series called Supersizers Go. She and a food critic named Giles Coren live how middle-upper class folk in various points of history live to see how the food/lifestyle affects their health. It is both informative and HI-F&~%IN-LARIOUS.

why do you keep tying good to lawfulness? And fighting to killing? Ugh, paladins... [/ooc]leaves bounty hunters naked, relieved of belongings, tied up, and gift wrapped inside of local house of ill repute[/ooc]

I have yet to see a Scooby Do iteration I liked. Every episode was regurgitated hot garbage IMO.

Gee, is it a greedy ass in a mask? Turns out it was.

Wooow...

More Strange Aeons Spoilers:
For our next trick, a dread wraith hiding in the extra-thick walls, using its reach to attack the PCs without endangering itself...
...except...
...if you actually read the fricking rules on LifeSense, it requires line of effect. So the wraith can't attack with reach without following the standard rules of incorporeality: Either it takes its 50% miss chance to try to hit creatures in adjacent squares, or it emerges. Reach has nothing to do with it.

So... remember my tirades about the APs wanting the rules to work "differently" or to have "exceptions"? This is a prime example of what I'm complaining about. "Well, I want a wraith that can permanently hit the PCs while never emerging from the walls, so there's nothing the PCs can do about it."

I have yet to meet a player who enjoys fighting incorporeal creatures; well-played, they're a massive threat and PITA in the first place. Bending the rules to make them even more of a PITA will bring joy to none.

Good = I will not beat people up just for doing their jobs if I can figure out a way around it. Harming others is bad.

Lawful = The law of the land says they're in the right, so I shouldn't fight them.

I'm not conflating the two concepts; I'm just pointing out that they both lead to the same, "We shouldn't fight if we can avoid it," conclusion.

Beating government employees up, looting them, and leaving them in their skivvies back in their home office is neither good nor lawful, though it frequently feels as if it should be.

I get really frustrated as a GM when "this thing does not work the way you say it should" is pushed through in an adventure, especially if the wrong interpretation of the rules seems required to make the event happen the way it should.

But that said, as frustrating as it may be, usually stuff like that I believe is usually an honest oversight rather than an intentional attempt to bend the rules to make an encounter work differently than it should. After all, even if the writer of the adventure wanted the rules bent, most GMs will end up having to change things or risk player revolt. Often I think such mistakes happen when an element is changed in the adventure but everything isn't updated (e.g., maybe it was originally a different monster or different walls, etc.).

For whatever it's worth, as an occasional freelance editor for Paizo, when I spot rules discrepancies like that, I flag it to be sure the devs take a look. If it is an actual rules problem more often than not they will change it. Unfortunately it sounds like in that case the issue wasn't picked up on. Which is very frustrating, most definitely. I wonder if the AP's forum has suggested alternatives or workarounds?

On my last question to the forum, I was told, "Be a DM, <make a decision>, and move on."

The Strange Aeons forum is the single-most-hostile AP forum I've been on. I've minimized it so I don't have to deal with it, much like the Rules and Advice forums.

Yes, the question was trivial ("This secret door doesn't have a DC listed. What are people using for it?"). But a simple, "I used a 25," would have sufficed. I can't see interpreting, "Be a DM," as anything other than insulting and condescending. "How DARE you ask such a trivial question on a thread dedicated to questions about this book?"

I'm putting in all the workarounds I need; I have many years of homebrew behind me. But if I have to rewrite sections of the AP because they punish good roleplayers, change monsters around because the as-written ones will just upset and frustrate me and my players, and have to learn alternative rulesets because the AP authors didn't like the delivered ones, then... er... why am I paying for an AP instead of just writing my own?

Honestly, Rise of the Runelords and Curse of the Crimson Throne just ran themselves. They were awesome. Serpent's Skull was rough around the edges, but still easy to run. Jade Regent had major issues in several books, but I could at least run the AP. Strange Aeons is the first AP where I've honestly thought, "Maybe I should just give up and homebrew the rest."

It's not Paizo's most shining moment.
