It's actually quite serendipitous, Mort. You have a brother in Arizona. I have a brother in Arizona. We could both visit our brothers (I visit mine, and you visit yours. Although I guess I could visit yours while you visit mine, but that could be awkward.) and meet. And you could give me cake then.

I think I'll pass on it, though my brother might like it, as I'm not really much of a fan of David's writing.
I let the lady set the pace for intimate contact for a variety of reasons.
I really really try doing this, but its always been hard.
I'm innately very physical person, or in other words I tend to touch a lot. I touch hands, arms, shoulders on most people, mostly to emphasize emotions, and if it warranted, intimacy.I have experienced though, being carried away and touching waists or faces/necks unsolicited, which I now now is off-limits for some people.
It's hard,at least for me, to get the "signals" for what's alright and what's not. I don't read emotions that well, and as a someone in the high functioning autism, I don't really tend to seen things quite like other people.
I guess I'm saying "I'm trying" though the results have been mixed over the years.
In no way will I let Freehold set the pace.

I too am very tactile, but I always ask first before touching, or at least try to read any signs in evidence. Mistranslations do occur, and apologies- often embarrassed ones- are readily made.

So, the kids finished Detroit: Being Human today.
On the one hand, it was an awesome story. Very deep, with an amazing insight into the nature of humanity. On the other hand, the game "play" was virtually nonexistent; you were just choosing from a set of available responses, and very occasionally playing a few button-mashing games. So I'd call it more of an "interactive book" than a "game".
And I'm afraid $60 for an "interactive book", even one that takes 20-30 hours to finish, is a bit steep.
There was mention earlier of cops and ticket quotas. I had a friend in high school whose dad was a cop. I asked him one day about ticket quotas. He said (paraphrasing here, it's been a long time): "There aren't really any quotas. But you are judged unofficially on a number of things, including tickets given out during traffic duty. If the higher ups think you aren't giving out enough, they will make their displeasure known in a variety of ways. Such as giving you crappy shifts, or the s%!~ty car, or not approving your vacation requests, things like that. So, no real quotas, just enforced unofficial ones."
Now, that was for one small county in Illinois. Can't say it's the same everywhere, but it seems likely to me.

Their salaries from their jobs are paid to the school to cover approx. 2/3 the cost of their tuition, the families pay about 10%, and the rest is from private donors. The idea is that, when they graduate, they not only have the classroom education, but they also have built a starter resume that's a little more impressive than your average high school kid's.
Since one of my biggest complaints about working in private education myself is that, for the most part, it's education for the rich, and it pi$$es me off, I am solidly in favor of this educational model.
And he's excited about being considered for the job.
I sooooooooo hope he gets this one!

Really enjoyed NOVA's Dawn of Humanity, a documentary about that massive fossil find from years ago, where they found zillions of hominid bones in the deep bowels of a byzantine cave. It had a lot of in-the-moment interviews and footage, giving it an almost-reality TV vibe...except of course it is reality.
(Can you tell I'm not a fan of so-called reality tv?)
Also really liking Netflix's Explained, each episode of which is a 20-minute crash course in a topic, ranging from K-Pop to [the search for] extraterrestrial intelligence to the stock market. It's not enought to make anyone an expert of course, but it is surprisingly informative.

Tuesday, 10:00 am: We receive a surprise emergency announcement that we have an environment, and we must perform a thorough test on it before Thursday, when we will be given a second, different environment to test.
Wednesday, 10:00 am: After 8 work hours of frantic scrambling by the entire team (so a full work week if you consider that there are 5 of us), we finish our testing... just in time to be told, "Oh, never mind. We've decided that you don't actually get a choice, and we'll be using environment #2 (the one we haven't tested) instead..."
Yep. Making us scramble for no end purpose. That's my Global Megacorporation!

So, how important is exercise towards your senescence?
NobodysMother walked at least an hour a day, and went to the gym for a 3-hour workout at least twice a week, starting with her retirement at 68, and going on into her early 80s.
So her most recent complaint?
"Yeah, I'm really slowing down. At 82 I could do 12 miles and 2500' vertical easily. Now at 87 I'm only doing 5 miles and 500' vertical."
Hey, Hi! Where are you hiding? My 87-year-old mother wants to outhike you...
First attempt at teaching sword & buckler went OK, although there was a certain amount of confusion amongst the participants. Will have to think about what I can do about that...

I found a note on the windshield of the Celica this afternoon, politely informing me that it was illegal to block any part of the sidewalk, even while in my own driveway. And Albany is going to start aggressively ticketing those who do.
So, since our street is extremely parking-impacted, and this is putting another 10 cars on the street on our block alone, I called the police station and asked, "So, if I can't use my driveway, can I block my driveway?"
And the very pleasant woman answered, "No, that's still a citable offense."
So Albany just decided to add another 10 cars to our already-seriously-impacted parking situation.

Oh, I *understand* that it's illegal, but the cops have always turned a blind eye in neighborhoods like ours because they were built back in the 1920s-1930s when no one conceived of having two cars. Add an apartment complex and a few quads just down the block and parking in the area is virtually nonexistent already.
So why the sudden enforcement? It's definitely a strange turn of events, and if you look at it on its face it's, "I'm going to make my citizens' lives miserable to enforce a set of arbitrary laws based on realities that don't exist here."
Keeping your driveway clear is intended to allow emergency vehicles ready access to your house. Considering that an ambulance could not possibly fit into my driveway in the first place, the reasons for leaving the driveway clear are... unclear, at best.
EDIT: Interestingly enough, *only* the Celica seems to have gotten the note. Is someone sick of seeing it and trying to harass it into nonexistence? If so, good luck to them! I've got two kids to teach to drive a stick shift.

Aiymi update: Been back in the ER for the last couple+ hours. She's failing the basic cognitive tests (what day of the week is it, what month is it, etc) now. I can't keep her conscious long enough for her to eat more than a couple of bites at a time. They're admitting her into the hospital tonight. We still don't have a diagnosis.

LOL. We already did that. Me? Probably expected, I'm 20 years his junior or so and go to the gym regularly. My Dad? 18 years his senior, with a head full of white hairs? =P
Again the person who's job is closest to my Dad? Captain Yesterday. So yes, my Dad clocks 10,000 steps on a regular work day without going to the gym. He's a plant engineer but the more accurate term to describe his job is Mr Fix-it.

Yeah, I know Southwest always advertises its $49 "Wanna get away?" airfares, and by the time you've figured out that that's one-way and BEFORE all the airport fees and whatnot and that $49 ticket is closer to $140 and it's not feeling like all that much of a bargain after all.
Maybe we compromise and meet in Yellowstone after horrific, horror-laden drives. Of course, you'd miss out on NobodysWife because there is no way in Hades I would get her to take that trip, but the kids have never been, and I owe them a father/sons trip in August anyway.
Now, is there a train to Yellowstone...?
EDIT: OK, holy carp; Amtrak has a whole, "Plan your vacation around taking the train to Yellowstone" thing. That could be all kinds of fun...

Yeah we had that experience in Hokkaido, we thought the set was for 2,turned out it was for one. I chalk it up to lost in translation.
The good side was that the servings were that generous, it fed two anyway(with a little top up of rice). Us Asians don't eat as much as you Caucasians.
