I'm going to go out on a limb here...Filipino stick fighting training usually ends up with the teacher getting more bruises (usually on the hands) than the student, since the student has trouble with aim. If I extend that reasoning to Western European sword styles, I'm thinking a liver might get punctured.

The official Canadian web site lists $155 CA as the current work permit fee, so I suspect the fees were legit, especially since we had multinational corporations paying them.
Global Megacorporation is VERY clear in its guidance: "If you need to pay a bribe to conduct business, do not do it."
Whether or not they then wink and nod and do it under the table I have no idea. But since we were doing it all official-like with work order numbers and so forth, I'm going to go ahead and guess it was legit.
Though I know my brother got to spend a night in a Canadian jail cell for some planted evidence. I'll see whether I can get him to re-relate the story to me.

Why some dog breeds get a bad reputation:
So, a guy in our neighborhood has decided to start walking his pit bull mix down our street every day. And of course, being a stereotypical pit bull owner, he doesn't have her on a leash, and when confronted he says, "Oh, she's really gentle! She wouldn't hurt a fly! She doesn't need a leash!"
Yes, Albany, just like most urban areas, does have leash laws requiring dogs to be on leashes outside of designated no-leash areas (of which our street is not one). Calling the police to report an off-leash dog you get the classic, "You know, we have better things to do, sir."
So everyone refuses to acknowledge that there's any issue here at all.
Then, a toddler runs up and smacks the dog in the face. Or a squirrel freaks it out. Or a car backfires. Or a million other things outside of the dog and the owner's control. And the dog bites someone. Being a pit bull mix, the dog causes significant injury.
All the newspapers hear about "another pit bull attack on an innocent person" and the media cycle buzzes with vicious pit bulls, and why haven't we put them all down yet, or made it illegal to own them?
Because one a**hat can't be bothered to put his dog on a leash.
Yeah, he ticks me off. Every day.

that last sounds about right, according to someone i love who lives in Canada.
If you say the 100 bucks to get in is fair and above board, then it is fair and above board.

Knowing my luck, gnaw my leg and get me sued for smacking/kicking in self-defense. Leash all dogs, be it because they are a "fearsome" pit or merely a puntable poodle.

I prefer that dogs be on leashes because even though I like them I am allergic to them and apparently dogs share this quality with cats in that they can't wait to cuddle and jump on the person who is allergic to them and cover them in slobbery kisses.
Or it's just my aura of Disney princess that makes every animal I come across convinced that I am a fun and safe person. One of these things. ;P

You know, no matter how much high schoolers impress you with their intelligence and maturity, you eventually learn that yes, they're still high schoolers. Impus Major is in 1st period Culinary Arts. There is also a 3rd-period class and a 5th-period class.
Impus Major informed me on Monday that his class is now the only class that is allowed to cook any more. The 3rd period class apparently spent a period putting non-stick cooking spray over the entire floor of the classroom. The 5th period class asked for gloves to protect their hands as they did the dishes and had an impromptu water balloon fight with them.
Apparently these were only the latest incidents with those two classes.
So periods 3 and 5 are doing "food safety" training and washing dishes. Period 1 gets to actually cook. And if the cooking takes too long, the teacher makes Periods 3 and 5 do their dishes.
According to Impus Major, he makes a mean coleslaw. I think I'll force him to make some for our next Crimson Throne game.
Which inevitably means... BRAT DAY!!!!
EDIT: And just so's we're clear, this isn't a "1-day" or "1-week" penalty. Periods 3 and 5 are banned from doing any actual cooking for the entire Spring Semester! How hard to you have to work to get banned from cooking in a cooking class?

People abuse the freedom they have been given. It's why Singapore banned chewing gum. People just can't behave.
The sad thing? The class might actually feel happy that way. Some people think it's beneath their dignity to cook, and here has a tradition that wives do the cooking for their husbands. I don't mind overly much as long as he washes up the dishes. I hate washing up.
Lynora, I wish I could get animals to come cuddle up with me, but the best I've managed to get is indifference. Perhaps they sense the glutton I am inside...

Just be open, friendly, and helpful and you can sometimes get through the line even faster than the non-delcarers!
Also, when declaring, don't be a smart%$%. Be exact about what you're carrying, and don't joke.
For example, say "smoke detector" instead of "triggerable device carrying a radioactive substance."
Also, don't do something like say "invasion" in a German or Russian accent.
Amusingly, I said "marshmellows for burning down the White House" to an American customs agent in a fake Canadian accent and got directions to where I could pick up fire supplies.

Depending on the type of sword, they usually use either blunted or wooden weapons. The result is the instructor getting a lot of bruises...

Having dealt with the two, I would honestly prefer the pit to be unleashed. They're less vicious and less likely to attack you.

Then, no matter what move you make, what breath you take, we'll be hearing you.

A summary of my last roleplaying campaign in Savage Worlds...
1) Make a female character.
2) Make her a villain who hates Australia with GM approval.
3) Get a female agent trying to catch you.
4) Seduce said agent.
5) Ignore suspicious look from GM.
6) Turn good to help said agent, costing her a career in the process.
7) Suggest her new uniform feature a blue plaid miniskirt.
8) Get glared at by GM as she finally figured out which movie you hijacked the campaign to reenact.

My games hijack lots of gaming tropes and movie quotes.
An NPC yelled "Leroy Jenkins!" before he charged into bad guys.
Another NPC said he couldn't overtly help the party because it was bad for his public image and he needed to run for elections after.
An NPC was in tears after her prince charming didn't want to dance with her.

Our FACS teacher has vented in staff lounge that she couldn't let her culinary class bake anymore because they managed to ruin everything. Cookies, pastries, cakes...all bricks. Yet they apparently cooked entrees just fine.

I'm a classical fey trickster actually. Straight fights don't interest me much, though my knowledge of forbidden cheese can probably allow me to do them. But I still don't do them like those Real Men do.
But Ahhh to pull pranks on you...it makes me HAPPY!
Lol life is already full of seriousness. Ive been told that I can be very focused about my goals, so much that it scares people, so I try to poke fun at things so as not to get too serious.

Anyone know what happened to Kileanna?
What's a little concerning is that I don't think I've seen her or Dalindra since...around the time of the Catalonia vote fiasco last year.
She's been posting on the art threads and so forth. She told us she'd be taking a break from around here, but her last post is from Sunday, so I think she's fine.

So I can't post this in my Serpent's Skull thread, so I'll just spoiler it here:
The kids, having tipped off the fortress full of enemies, have decided that they're going to go through the roof to rescue the besieged Udarra, whom they've never met.
I can't wait to hear the follow-up. "Well, we wanted to make sure the people outside couldn't hurt her. They can't now."

She pokes in once in a while, I have seen her pop in, around once a week maybe every two weeks, on the following threads.
BEYOND THE ICEWALL (A Dragonlance Reign of Winter Story)
She's a sweet person, so I'm sure she'll respond if you PM her ^^
