So, a very charged and political tirade about dog ownership, but man, am I a wee bit p*ssed right now...

Do not read if you love pit bulls:
Yesterday afternoon, someone brought a pair of pit bulls to Memorial Park (the park across the street from my rental property) and turned 'em loose.

They found my tenants' cat. In its own front yard, under some bushes.

So now my tenants are not only dealing with losing their home of 10 years, but their cat as well, plus the husband may be facing legal or civil charges for discharging a firearm (he shot one of the dogs) within city limits.

I, for one, have never owned a gun, never will own a gun, and am all in favor of stricter gun registration laws, yet I consider this an extremely justified shooting. In my mind, it was only a matter of time before the dogs found a kid instead of "only" a cat.

But gods am I tired of the type of people who buy pit bulls precisely because of their vicious reputation, raise them to be vicious, and then turn them loose in public and act surprised at the results.

Get a beagle. Or a collie. Or a lab. Or a shepherd. Or a corgi. So many wonderful breeds of dog out there... that don't kill other people's pets...

OK. Sorry. I know very well it is not FaWtL-appropriate, and feel free to flag it and get it deleted, but man am I angry right now...

Sing to yourself in an off-key, sotto voce kind of way. That always makes people feel more comfortable about your presence.

Oh, and add a trash bag full of rags to the wagon. That'll help for sure...

Spoilering again:
The owner showed up immediately after the shooting, as did the police, the owner took possession of both dogs, admitted they were his, and a police report was filed.

Honestly, there is a fenced-in dog run in the park, and there have been complaints for many years about dog owners letting their dogs run loose off-leash outside of the designated dog area. Entire City Council meetings have been dedicated to the issue, with the city council basically saying, "Oh, it costs too much to enforce leash laws."
So it's just a classic, "Owner didn't think his dogs were a problem, let them run loose through the neighborhood, they killed someone's cat, the cat's owner killed one of them."

It's just ugly and sad all around, and could have easily been prevented.

OK. Sorry. I know very well it is not FaWtL-appropriate, and feel free to flag it and get it deleted, but man am I angry right now...

This is awful. Simply awful.

Politics part return:
Though I am not necessarily on the same end of the political spectrum, I both agree with you on leash laws and enforcement, and in both recalcitrance and justification in using fire arms.

One of the (many) reasons I am less than enthused by my Eldest's burning desire to own an animal is that *I* have owned an animal, and I know that: a) they are a whole passel of responsibility that mostly gets shifted to the parents (no matter what the kids say), b) the stories never end well, and c) I do not wish to take on that much responsibility - especially while trying to juggle so many other things.

Spoiler two!:
That said, I can't agree enough on people choosing "dangerous" breeds and raising them to be dangerous. This is the height of irresponsible behavior from animal owners.

Of course, then there are the people who choose big, powerful animals and insist, "Oh, they'd never hurt anyone! Ever!" and are still genuinely shocked when their animal hurts someone. Animals are not humans. They may or may not be "people" in a given person's view (that's up to an individual's tastes and beliefs to determine for themselves), and they are worth respecting and treating with kindness (which is, in fact, important, even for our food animals! Cruelty is awful, no matter what!), but they are definitively not human, and you do them a disservice by failing to recognize this.

They do not think like humans, do not understand like humans, and do not emotionally comprehend like humans. I have known wonderful animals - the very same kind of animals "that would never do that" but I was also raised to understand that, no matter how much you love them, and no matter how much you empathize with them (and they with you), they are not human. Maybe a given animal never harms a person. Good for them! That's awesome!

That does not make animals human, and does mean that they can be predicted to behave in the ways humans would.

I love animals. I respect them. I appreciate them, and I love our pets. I loved ours while they were with us.

But respect your daggum animals and recognize them for what they are. Do not show them such ridiculous disregard and treat them like humans - they are not. You need to be the human for yourself, and, more importantly, for everyone else. Don't hurt your animals by trying to force them to be something different.

This may be a peeve of mine, considering kids I've known that have gotten seriously hurt or sick from pet bites and cuts via "harmless" pets.

I am so incredibly sorry for your friends - this time is extremely trying for them, and I will be keeping them in my prayers, as I remember to do so.

Related-but-different:

Your family, on the other hand... I am also sorry for. It's humorous, in it's own way, yes, but I am still sorry. Taxes are super necessary for government, but they suck, nonetheless, and discovering that you made a serious error is never pleasant; much less that you made a serious error while harming a family member. I will pray for them, as I think of it, as well. I hope they take this as a good thing and opportunity for character growth, rather than falling to baser instincts.

And nothing there ('cept maybe your personal views; I don't mind, though), is really "political" so much as, "Hey: there is a local law and people are ignoring it." That's not really politics, at all.

(And CY: yeah, flagging your own posts is a thing. I've done it, and should do it more often, probably. XD)

~sighs~ No wonder I am broke. It is not the $560 that I just shelled out for the four new tire that the wife's car needed. It is the $112 for cat food, dog food, two types of cat litter, dog treats, and crickets. The donations to Pet Smart for helping abandoned animals added to that. That is around every two to four weeks. The cat litter is enough for a month but the dog and cat food is every two weeks. ~sighs~ The joy of having two dogs and six indoor and three outdoor cats. Plus a tree frog and a few fish.

Well, I think we're all agreed on, "Letting your two large dogs run off-leash in a park full of toddlers on Memorial Day is not responsible dog ownership."

It's just sad that certain breeds get reputations, attract bad owners, and end up in a feedback loop. Dobermans had the same problem in the 1970s.

CY posted funny/tragic things about his dog, and I posted very tragic dog story, then decided to remove it because everyone was asleep (or according to Freehold, at some thing called "work", which I just don't believe).

But of course now we have a dozen responses, so when the mods get in in the morning they're going to say, "Oh, good! FaWtL again! Deal with it your own selves!"

Because the mods love us and want us to be happy and feed us grapes and pears, just like red tortoises.

A fantasy trope that bugs me more the older I get: Stories which are premised on a world of magic and monsters, which is inexplicably unknown to the world's population at large.

Examples:

Supernatural's setting is one where a very few human hunters track down and deal with all manner of terrifying magic and monsters, which most people are blithely unaware of.

Buffy's setting is a town with a disturbingly high murder rate -- unnamed NPC characters actually comment on this -- and yet only a very few characters notice the monstrous demons and powerful magics running rampant in town. And oh yeah, the portal to hell that spawns said rampant modes of destruction.

Dr. Strange's corner of the Marvel universe -- correct me if I'm wrong, anyone who's read the comics -- is one where magic is powerful, anything but subtle, and learnable by anyone with the time and patience to study. In fact, the Ancient One compares magic to computer programming in order to allay Dr Strange's initial skepticism about her claims! And yet this corner of the Marvel universe is nestled within a real-world milieu, where Dr Strange's skepticism is entirely justified because colleges don't teach magic, governments don't employ sorcerers to advance and protect themselves, and yes, the general populace is clueless about its existence.

I understand that this sort of thing doesn't bug most people, but I'm curious if anyone's come across a name for this sort of setting conceit. Also, it feels really good to get that off my chest. :D

About the pitbull issue: I don't think they are a bad breed per se. I have met very balanced pitbulls. But if you are going to have a dog with a complexion and characteristics that allow it to cause more harm than the average dog you should be more cautious with it than the average owner.

Most people who have dogs don't know how to raise them to be balanced. They just don't educate them or do it the wrong way. But, as if they were spoiled children, they refuse to see how they really are and let them loose like they were inoffensive puppies.

It's worse when people actually educate them to be aggressive. A large dog can easily kill a person. They are raising a living being to be a weapon. I cannot approve that.

There's even a whole RPG setting (WoD), that falls completely into that premise. The say that with the 5th edition they will fix that. We'll see

All of them have a strong mechanism for hiding themselves too. Vamps do it or older vamps kill em Werewolfs scare the bejeesus out of people so bad they igther have a heart attack block it out or become one of those big foot sighting people. Mages probably do it like the wizards in harry potter.

Did you pick up the 20 anniversary versions of Vamp WW and mage kile?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yup!
Mage is one of my favorite games ever, to storytell or to play. I still haven't tried 20th anniversary editions but I have them.

I really loved Werewolf too, specially the duality between the man and the beast, the spirit and the flesh. My Child of Gaia was probably my most long lived character. She survived all her pack and ended being completely burned (metaphorically) by the horrors of the war. She now lives somewhere in retirement. The fate of a galliard: to live to tell the tale.

I aggree that they have ways to hide themselves but those ways were getting more ineffective as technology started developing more and more. Even with the Technocracy around it was unbelievable that some of the creatures continued being able to hide.
