That’s enough feminine wiles for me. My teacher taught me this.

Love how goofy the dragons look. And he's absolutely right about how well the weirwood trees fit with a Japanese/Shinto environment.

Touching moment last night: The head chef at Rivoli is retiring after many wonderful years, so we've been frequenting the place to sample her last few menus before the "new guy" takes over.

Last night was our final dinner with her as head chef.

So, as always, dinner was wonderful, and we got one of our two favorite waitpeople. (One's a man and one's a woman, so I have no idea what the plural is here.)

After dinner the two of them came to us, arm in arm, and told us, "We'd like you to know that we covered dessert for you tonight, because we really love you, and we love it that you come here and make our nights a bit brighter, and we always look forward to seeing you here. So we know we're getting a new chef, but the two of us are really hoping that you'll keep coming, just for us!"

Just too, too sweet for words!

And of course we declared that we were going to dig through our rusty old trunks and find "proper" clothing to wear so we can be all stuffy and formal for the new chef. :-P

(As most of you know, both Shiro's player and I work in high tech. When I meet with the VP of my division, she merits... a polo shirt. When Shiro's player wore a button-down shirt to work one day (long time no laundry), the president of his division came to his office to personally ask him not to leave. Yeah, formal dress is not something we're used to; I think I have a couple of suits and around a dozen ties around here somewhere...)

I've never worn a suit or tie, I have a sweater around somewhere, even my wedding I wore a Hawaiian shirt (twas 87 degrees, 100% humidity, and an outside wedding)

I bought *ONE* suit at the Men's Wearhouse that's lasted me nearly 30 years now (!!). In my mid-20's, we started having to go to a lot of weddings, so I bought a cheap tux (it's amazing that if you have to wear a tux 7 times in your life it's cheaper to own one. And I was having to wear one to a LOT of weddings.) Finally, when I found myself constantly looking for work as a "gypsy professor" my wife made me buy a nice sports jacket for interviews. (And why are they called "Sports jackets" anyway? They're hot, cumbersome, and you can't raise your arms over your head in them. Hardly "sporty".)

Other than that, my previous job as a technical trainer had me flying all over the U.S. and Canada in a button-down shirt and tie (no jacket), so I know I have a lot of decent shirts and ties. The jackets are the issue.

If we're trying to be silly by dressing nicely, we should really be able to wear something nice. It's impressive how hard that's turning out to be for us...

I envy you guys for being able to get away with that. I hate suits and ties, so much. But my current job requires the men to wear ties (and the dress code for women is even more inconvenient), so there's no escaping that.

Every year I suggest casual Friday, gets a laugh every time (tee shirt, jeans or cargo shorts and steel toe boots are the "dress code"

Tho at the toy store it's tee shirt and dark pants

I don't think I could psychologically handle formal wear :-)

I look fairly OK in a suit, but I can't really wear the one suit I own. Why? Because it's the one I got for my high school prom about a decade ago. Need to figure out a way to get a cheap suit that's a little less dated so I'll have something to wear to a friend's wedding in a couple months.

I swear by the Men's Wearhouse. Don't know if they're in your neck of the woods, but tailored suits on the cheap is golden for those of us who never dress up and are on a budget.

Of course, George Zimmer got ousted for being too nice to the customers, so who knows how they are these days...

Oh, geez. I am *soooo* sorry!

Being a technical trainer was the best job I ever had.
Having to wear a shirt and tie Every. Frickin'. Day. For that job was the worst requirement I ever had.

Just wait -- you'll get into your 40's or 50's, get some years under your belt, and your employer will say, "Please just don't come to work naked or in a clown suit and we'll be happy."

Considering I spend most of my life in Chefwear pants of interesting patterns, they're asking a lot of me to "look decent".

Ah, the wonders of high tech in California...

I still love Shiro's player. Yes, he is technically an "executive at a Fortune 500 company", and I give him all kinds of <smurf> for that already, but the fact that they throw him in the corporate jet to meet with teams around North America and he wears... beat-up jeans and a T-shirt... delights me no end. He WILL NOT dress up for work. Ever. And if they try to make him, he'll leave. And they can't afford that, because he's the only one old enough to remember how all the old systems were built. And they know it. So he gets away with whatever he feels like.

Engineering -- it's where you want to be!

OK, major Photoshop-related issue:

I installed a new brush set, and after I installed it, Photoshop decided to dump all of my brushes into one big folder instead of the folders they were organized into before. I still have all of my brushes, but I can't find the ones I need, given that every time I want to change brushes, I have to dig through hundreds of them. How do I fix this?

Update: found a minor work-around, but it's still annoying as f!%!. Before, to change out my brushes, I could just go to the Brushes tab, click the little arrow, and be presented with a list of my brush sets. Now, I have to go Brushes -> arrow tab -> replace brushes -> load set, which takes about three times as long.

Well! Back home, boys abed for nap, and I'm pretty sleepy.

I have pbp stuff to do, and a few thing to read and review, and a whole host of chores.

So naturally, now's the time to install Bioshock 2!

(Of course, it tells me that it's going to take 13 hours to download... >.>)

Hah, I wish. No, they're very picky about dress code where I work. Employees from the new recruits to the veterans in their 60s-plus are all expected to adhere.

I got into a fight with my boss about wearing a shirt and tie at work. He won.

The days I work in the kitchen, I wear business casual clothes.

A lot of it for us is that as we work primarily with non-profit organizations, many of our clients - in fact, a large majority - are churches and other religious organizations. As a result, the clients have an expectation of what employees at the company will look, dress, and act like, an expectation that the owner and management want to adhere to.

I guess it's a similar situation with me, at least at the main job.

If I had to wear a shirt and tie every day, it might give me some incentive to start taking care of myself instead of looking like I got kicked out of a Nirvana cover band.

About a year ago my company ditched the whole suit and tie thing and we rejoiced. Like CH says If I have an important meeting I am back in the monkey suit, but otherwise it's polo shirts and khaki's except for fridays. Then I am in jeans and a hawaiian shirt

Quick exchange from the end of the podcast I just watched:

L: I gotta piss like a racehorse.
B: So do I.
J: Hey, you made it through the whole podcast.
L: I don't have to piss a lot. I just like to throw my head back and neigh.

Someone recommended that I watch a movie called "Ghost in the Shell," so I ordered it off of Netflix. It's pretty good, and I think it's legit, but it feels like a bootleg. It's dubbed in English, with English subtitles, but the subtitles don't match the dubbing at all. I feel like I'm reading a synopsis of the dialog while the dialog is being said on screen.

There's also some weird localization stuff. The film is obviously set in Japan, and in one scene, a character is referred to (in the subtitles, anyway) as an "American foreigner," but in another scene, another character is talking about "an illegal immigrant that can't even speak English."

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"My last partner got busted workin' as an illegal alien. Couldn't speak English, but he was a lot better than you are."

Was that the discussion between two garbage collectors? I think it was just a reference that the illegal alien couldn't even speak English, not to mention Japanese.
