Round 2 - Archetype Two for One - Swap

RPG Superstar™ 2011 General Discussion

How does one denote swapping one thing (feat, ability, class feature...) for multiple new abilities?

The format currently used doesn't quite address that... or are some things understood?

Say you add a couple of class skills, and a few weapons... yes, yes, they are integral to the concept and never mind the word count for now.

How does one denote that both of those things came at the expense of a feat or Uncanny Dodge?

See the PRD for the existing APG archetypes. For example, in the Beast Master archetype for the Ranger:

PRD wrote:

Animal Companion (Ex): A beast master forms a close bond with an animal companion. This ability functions... This ability replaces hunter's bond.

Improved Empathic Link (Su): The beast master gains an empathic link with all of his... This replaces the 6th-level combat style feat.

Edit: Or am I misunderstanding what you're asking?

He means replacing one ability for multiple minor adjustments.

I think it would work best by incorporating similar abilities under one name.

Quote:
Pants (EX) This ability gives the barbarian a pair of pants. In addition there is a zipper which can be used to close the pants. This ability replaces fast movement.

Now you don't have to worry about class skills or weapon proficiency because those are just listed and you don't say how the class is earning them. It's assumed that they are taken into account with the power of the abilities you are giving and replacing.

That seems like one good way to handle it.

If you decide it needs a cost, some published archetypes include provisions that only remove or diminish existing class abilities without giving new abilities in return, implicitly spreading any credit for those reductions across the archetype's other abilities, since a character must apply all the substitutions for an archetype.

Right, like delaying Wildshape or Divine Bond.

Those druid archtypes confused the heck out of me until it clicked that they were making Wildshape worse so the other abilities could be better.
