When looking at the city specs for say a large city, it gives the base value for the market place as 10,400 gp. My understanding is that anything less exspensive than that is easily found and readly available. However, it says that their are 4d4 minor items to be found in the city and 3d4 medium items and so on. With a 10,400 gold piece 'max' for easily found items wouldn't that mean that all minor magic item would be avaliable? or does the base value number only corrilate to nonmagic items? Thanks for your help.

I think what you're looking for is here, under the "Purchasing Magic Items" section.

A large city has an 8,000 GP limit, which means that anything worth LESS than that has a 75% chance of being easily found. If that 75% chance roll fails, then the shop is likely temporarily out of stock, or some such.

The random minor, medium and major items are those that are above this limit. If you randomly roll an item worth less than the limit, you should reroll.

These rules are just for magic items, and those that are "particularly expensive, such as full plate, or made of an unusual material, such as an adamantine longsword." Anything else should be generally available or subject to DM discretion.

That's the rules as written anyway. As DM you're well within your rights to limit or expand the availability of items, generally or specifically. Shops may be willing to take special requests, or they may simply be "pawn shops", reselling only what happens to be sold to them by other adventurers.

I´m reading "Large City" (table 15-1, p. 461 Basic Rulebook) at 8000 gm Base value, but thats a minor difference. According to the part entitled "purchasing magic items" on p. 460, there is a flat 75% chance of any item at that cost or lower to be found, and additionally, there are a random number of random items at sale as well, represented by the dice rolls. Is continues that any item costing less base value should be rerolled.
So, in a large city, any item that costs 8000 gp or less has a flat 75% percent chance to be available, and additionally, 4d4 minor items, 3d4 medium items and 2d4 major items, all of those costing more than 8000 gp.
This is quite a lot, and I guess that larger communities need a lot rerolls to determine the random items, especially the lesser ones. I don´t use these numbers as intended, but rather take the rolls as to see what is available at all.

Mundane items are not covered by this, although I take these values as a guildeline - you won´t get a Full Plate armor in a small town or smaller community in my game, and a thorp would be able to provide the most basic equipment only.

I don't understand.

Could you quote 16 minor items that cost more than 8000 gp ?
I noticed that (almost) all minor items cost less than 8000 gp, so you should always reroll, to infinity... no ?

+2 weapons, weapons/armor with certain special abilities, and several rings.

Other than that though, you can get virtually all minor items in a large city.

You're right, i've forgotten that !
Thanks.

As the rules state, up to the maximum allowable cost for the type of community. This isn't just saying that you can only find 1 item at that listed rate. It is possible there are multiple.

And don't forget knowledge (local), Diplomacy.. These could assist in finding a mage to make an item you want or even to find someone who has one that might be able to sell it to you. adversely, if your trying to sell an item, these skills could assist in finding a buyer if without dealing with a shop. Individuals might have more than the listed gold per community. Just another way to get / sell items more quicky.
