How would you pronounce Eidolon?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Considering our group is having a summoner join our cast of characters I wanted to sort of get a universal acceptable pronunciation for the Eidolons. What do you say the correct pronunciation is?

There can be quite an amount of varying opinions for many common terms in the game. I was shocked when I found out the varying pronunciations of the word drow. It sounds like cow, the end! However, some tend to disagree. Lets not get started with the correct pronunciation of the word melee!!

So how do you pronounce EIDOLON?

Don't know what the official one is.

I always pronounce it EYE-de-lon

Emphasis on Eye, obviously.

EDIT: Hmm, or perhaps I should have said EYE-de-lahn? It's more like the a sound in lawn than the o sound in long.

I go with EE do lon

EYE-doe-lun.

It's a fantasy game. Any pronunciation is valid, IMHO.

Rhymes with "bow"...

And I'm sure everyone's using the preferred (listed first) plural: "eidola".

I pronounce it "idol" (as in, American) - "on". Not quite as much emphasis on the "dol" part as Dictionary.com says to use.

Except bow is both BOH (as in, to tie a) and BAH-uh (as in, to take a). So... not much of a guide.

(For my part, I and mine have always said DRAH-uh.)

Yes, that was the joke... :)

Liberty's Edge

I pronounce drow "drow".

I second the use of that website. I always check there whenever there's a question on game term pronunciation. That's also where I refer people to when they try to correct me when I say beast-ee-air-ee instead of best-ee-air-ee. Both are correct.

For eidolon, I used the dictionary.com pronunciation with the emphasis on the second syllable until I heard Jason Bulmahn pronounce it "idol-on" in a podcast somewhere. I figure if the guy who created it pronounced it that way, I would too.

It's a much older word and has been used before this context.

I tend to pronounce it EYE-doe-lawn, but quickly so it's more like "idle on."

There are so many regional pronunciations anyway so the most important thing is to find one that harmonizes with your natural accent.

That sir, is coolness. Thank you.

I always prefered the Japanese version, personally
Ay duh lawn

I don't know what it is but apparently everyone I game with and myself, mispronounces a lot of rpg names. We say; Maa Jus = Magus , and Ay-Doe-Lawn = Eidolon. Anyone else from new england do this? I guess we are all japanese some here somehow lol.

Excellent! Many choices but I have made the decision and it goes with the idol-on. If Jason Bulmahn says it this way it is good enough for me! Thanks all for the fun, but it is drow as in cow!! Nothing else. I am part drow, trust me I know!

Ahem.

Whether or not Jason says it one way doesn't make it the RIGHT way.

Dictionary.com has the answer, in any event. And in this case, that IS the way Jason says the word.

in our group weronounce it idle-on. mybfriend called his Eric.

The question has been starting brawls for decades now. I don't expect it to change. The overwhelming choice in this region is "rhymes like plow."

Whenever a character at our table pronounces drow as if it rhymes with cow, he refuses to acknowledge it as a word, and has all NPC's ask for clarification, and then correct the pronunciation. He knows how it is supposed to be said but he prefers the other way. He does say Eidolon correctly though, which is nice.

Me learn new fun stuff. Yay!

Funny, I would have stressed the first syllable - but then, my english pronunciation is sometimes off anyways.

I pronounce it ay(short 'a')-duh-lawn', I've heard it this way in anime and video games, and I prefer it.
I pronounce it Drow (cow, plow, (eye)brow), sounds more menacing than 'crow'. Also, according to Races of Faerun, drow is a derivative of dhaeraow, the elven word for traitor.

Kierato is correct. Plus one and all that jive gibberish.

On both counts. All three counts technically.

I always thought it was ( Idol-On ) But i am from New England and don't pronounce very many things right anyway
