The App would do the math for you, while you just have to play around with the points for each attribute...

I use an excel-sheet for that. Having it on my iPhone or iPad would be awesome!

Attribute calculation is easy. Once you work out the bloody math anyway...

Those are the sales for 2010, not the actual amount of units active using the aforementioned OSes. Those are also global stats, don't know how many units Paizo is selling in China or Africa, but I suspect it doesn't compare to the number of units sold in the US. Then you use the number of units in actual use and not the sales for the last year. One does not count a countries citizens based on the number of newborns, you take all the people in circulation into account. iOS has been around for 3.5 years, Android for only for 2.2 years, the Black Berry for over a decade.

As you can see the sales for 2009 were abysmal compared to what they are now. Android is sprinting to catch up to the competition, it's curious to see if they keep on sprinting. BB OS is getting replaced and to be honest that is looking good as well, especially their new tablet (the first use of their new OS).

Was the 'defect' so big that it was a 'show stopper'? If not, why not release it and bug fix it in a newer release? You can't throw a dragon and hit a 4E iOS app, not so much for Pathfinder. Any hints on what the apps do? That way we might hold of buying apps that might do what we want with a little bit of work.


And here are those of us with Palms WebOS not getting ANY attention whatsoever.... /cry

I suspect that, even though those are global stats, Android and iOS also do not have a significant sales level in many places.

I think the point though should be obvious, that Android basically owns. iOS has a larger install base if you count all previous years sales, but I strongly suspect that by this time next year the total number of Android devices in use will outnumber the total number of iOS devices in use many, many times over. Mark my words :)

Android went from 3.9% of total market to 22.7% in one year. iOS by comparison, counting ALL of their various form factors (iPad, iTouch, iPhone, etc) went from 14.4% to 15.7% share in the same period, dropping from 3rd place to 4th. Android climbed from 6th to 2nd in the same period. I don't know about anyone else, but that's pretty clear to me.

Are you confusing BB OS with Palm's webOS? Because if you meant to say webOS, I can agree with you there that it does look appealing and the TouchPAD is very appealing. I watched the HP show yesterday and I got the impression that it could be a viable competitor in this market.

There is a very good reason why sooner or later the AndroidOS will beat out the iOS, and that is the Android OS is on many platforms, while the iOS is just on 1.

What App developers really have to worry about is all the different versions of Android, what works on one version may not work on another, while iOS developers really only need to worry about 1 version, the current.

I agree that Android OS will probably run right past iOS, but that has more to do with it being cheap (no license fee) and every hardware manufacturer has access to it, then with it being the 'better' OS.

I do think that Android is quickly catching up with iOS in regards to user-friendliness and feature set. But it still has a way to go. Also individual implementations can vary wildly, just because a piece of hardware uses Android doesn't mean it's a great implementation of Android. There are many new Android products out there that are crap because they used a really old version of Android, or the removed everything that makes Android a 'free' platform.

Imho, the only advantage that Android currently has over iOS is that it's not locked down and is based on Open Source software. I have very little issues as a user with the locked down nature of the iPhone/iPad. I have never had a piece of hardware that is as easy to use in daily operation as the iPhone/iPad.

As in regards to using iOS apps, I prefer to use the iPad at the table then the iPhone4, it just has more screen real estate. There's currently nothing that really compares to the iPad in Android country, but I'm sure that's going to change soon.

While some would dismiss me as a rabbit Apple fan, I'm not. I like their smallest iPod, the iPhone(4), and the iPad. I absolutely hate iTunes, I de-installed it asap and only install it for firmware updates once in a blue moon. I have a mac mini, but it primarily runs windows(7), it was the only piece of hardware that I could find that was as small, powerful, low-heat, and low-power (at a reasonable price) I could find. And the MacOS is useful for when a customer asks me a mac specific question (about once a year). MacOS just isn't for me, I have to work on a daily basis in Windows environments, so I see no reason to work in a different OS when there's no advantage to me in it. And I have serious trust issues with their large computer monitors or their repair centers (when we get three 30" monitors in a row with the same issues, we return it and go for HPs ;-).

I was talking about QNX, the stuff that is running on the new Playbook, and will run exclusively from the BB7 onwards.

Don't forget the iOS install base also includes iPod Touch and iPad devices.

Any word on the iphone app yet? Been quiet for the past couple months. Did you guys feed the coder to the goblins?

Last week Vic said they were still awaiting the fixes to the bugs he mentioned in his last post in this thread


Seems that they're on track to have a bad name due to tardiness of an app, rather than a bug on an app. Release it, and then patch it, IMO.


I am just as anxious however I'm not sure a buggy release then patch is the right answer. It would depend on how big of a bug it was I guess. Assuming they never told you anything at all about a release I doubt you would be as upset about it. Erik telling you about the impending app was not something he had to do.

How can you be tardy when you haven't set a release date?

I've kind of gotten the impression from threads like these that Paizo has learned a bit from WotC's DDI problems over the last year or so. They haven't made any official announcements or made any specific promises, but they have been communicating with the community. Plus as an added bonus they aren't repeatedly saying "soon".

I can't really fault them for holding off on the release to make sure that they deliver a quality product, especially since they have no release date to push back.

The latest news is that we've decided to concurrently release an iPad version of the apps, and that is still in development. I'm told it won't be too long before that's done, but until it is, we're in a holding pattern.

This weekend I ran my entire session off of my iPad 2 using the PDF's and Pages. Which means I didn't have to carry a metric assload of books to the LIRR and all the way from 8th ave to Madison Avenue to my game.

I packed most of my props (flip-mat, cards, Combat Pad, etc) into my old laptop bag and was good to go.

I cut and past images from the AP & the Bestiary into Pages so I could show my PC's what the Queen's Physicians, Dr. Davalous and other assorted NPC's looked like.

If I need to consult a map, no flipping through a book or even printed out sheets of paper to find it. already cut and pasted into Pages for quick reference.

It was AWESOME.

I'm awaiting this new app with anxious anticipation. Although if it has an initiative counter I dont think that I could ever give up my Combat Pad. I've grow pretty attached to it over the last few years...

Come on guys, get this out! (I'm "mxyzplk," whose post from more than a year ago is cited in the OP!) Release for the iPad later. A classic mobile app error is waiting till you "have it perfect," you'll wait and release and everyone will find a bunch of bugs week one and you'll be rushing another release to Apple anyway, you may as well get real user burnin to shake kinks out before you're trying to juggle another platform too.

Yes, but depending on what the issues Vic found, if it is in common enough code, and too many people trust it without checking math... Yo have to have a working backbone before putting it out. Remember it is not being developed in-house, so they don't have control over how quickly bugs get fixed.... if they had set it out 2 months ago and the users found what vic was talking about (especially if it was something that effected all users - such as favored class skills/hp not getting added or something) and it took this long to fix them, you'd be just as mad if not more so

Nothing takes this long to fix unless there's something else bad going on - flaky developers, problems with payments (unlikely with Paizo), etc. "Not in house" should certainly not mean "zero control over timeline" unless it's being done free/as a favor instead of a paid project.

Yeah some times you have more control out of house then in house, in house you have to keep your employees generally happy, and not in a state of rebellion. Outside you get to play the villainous role of "Client".

I have stories... being my companies software vendor is enough to give the tarasque the shaken condition.


I just downloaded the first 2 paizo apps Icrit and Ifumble not bad for a start. Any news on what the next one will be and when?

However I'm felling a little underwhelmed. I've never been one for the Crit/Fumble decks. It's an okay starting point as forray into Apps. Now a Harrowing App I woud have jumped all over in heart beat. Likewise a Case App once that deck has run it's print course. An inventory App based on your item cards could be interesting with an XML or better a CSV export. The best equipment tool I ever used was the 3.0 demo character maker by Fluid. The drag and drop element was so smooth it almost felt like Apple did it.

I'll tell you the same thing I told the RPGcalc guy, please incude a sound mute option internal to the app. Sometimes sound is nice, sometimes sound is disruptive, and sometimes I have my iPad running music and sound of it's own.

(And since I don't use critical fumbles/hits, it's not something I really need or want.)

After having expectations for so long for an app, I hope there's more than this coming soon.

The paizo guys did a lot of taming expectations for this at PaizoCon. Maybe that didn't cross over here to the messageboards, but they said, more or less, "Don't expect anything Earth-shattering".

The bottom line here is that we need to support these apps if we want Paizo to continue these forays into the digital realm (although, to an extent, they realize that they need to anyway). Personally, I don't use either deck, but will buy the apps just to support the idea.


Nope, it didn't quite make it all the way to the message boards XD.

I didn't say I didn't buy them :p. I just said I'm underwhelmed. They feel like what they are, a kind of "Hello World".

Seriously though, I think the next target should be a digital Harrow. This has at least the possibility of reaching outside the hard-core hobbyists and into the general public. Fortune telling things always have appeal and Paizo defiantly has a handle on lining up art assets.

I myself like to use the cards during a game session. Adds a little bit especially when using the crit deck. Being priced at 1.99 still cheaper than the actual cards and less to carry around. I believe the apps will get better (fingers crossed for interactive character sheet)

Ok, rather than continue to be negative, let me say what I would prefer.

I would prefer something along the lines of a GameMastery app, which would have all of the cards/map pack sets - and possibly even let you add your own. Or, at least, have the option of making "in-app" purchases to acquire a particular card set or map tile set. You could also have an initiative tracker, monster HP tracker, and so forth.

And another app would be a Pathfinder app that would add features to support the other lines.

For example, you could have an adventure path module/component for each AP that would keep track of monsters fought, treasure found, auto XP calculator, etc.

You could also have an interactive Golarion app that could be an index of where to find things. (Such as, you type in "Absalom" and it would give you a general overview and list an index of products where more information could be found.)

Also, I think that all of the apps should enhance the existing products in some way, not simply repeat them.

I just got an iphone and the first apps I searched for were Pathfinder Apps. So these were my first two app purchases.
Sure I would have preferred some GM tools (NPC & Monster) Apps, even some PC Apps(Char. Gen/Char Sheet) or a rules compendium/reference app, but I'm still happy with these two. The ifumble will get more use than the crit app, but that's just because my group has more fun with fumbles.

Character builder/sheet would be awesome.

The two that are out now look good, though.

Well, I just got my iPhone and the first two apps I purchased were iFumble and iCrit. Simple, but very useful - exactly what I expect in an app. Can't wait to use them in game.

I'd love to see a treasure generator and a random encounter generator in the future!

I saw the apps the day they came out and bought them. I was surprised there was no big announcement about them. I cannot wait for more Paizo apps. I am also waiting for Hero Lab for IPad.

I just picked up the Ifumble app. for what it is, it works great. I would suggest that you inable a way to turn off the sound. As I play music in the background while playing a game I would like to toggle off the sound in the app. I have it on an Ipad. As for the price I would consider dropping the price to $.99.
