Hi, one of my players plays a dwarf druid who really loves riding: by the way he portraits him, this dwarf is a marvelous character.
He wants to ride a horse: can dwarves ride horses, since they are a medium sized race, or do they have to ride ponies just like halflings and gnomes do? Many thanks,
V.

Everyone can mount al kind of creatures, but you may take some penalties.
I.e. A halfling can't fast-mount a horse as a free action (see the Ride skill). Very small creatures or characters mounting too big creatures may have problems with the reach of their weapons.
I'm not sure what does this quote from the Core Rulebook mean
Horse: A horse is suitable as a mount for a human, dwarf,
elf, half-elf, or half-orc. A pony is smaller than a horse and
is a suitable mount for a gnome or halfling.
In any case the best mount for small creature is a riding dog and yes, a dwarf can mount a horse, he just looks funny.

The general rule is that a Medium creature can ride any quadrupedal creature at least one size larger, so a dwarf can ride a horse and gnome can ride a pony.
There's also a rule, back in the 3.0 Arms and Equipment Guide, that a Medium creature can ride any bipedal creature at least two sizes larger, so if the dwarf has a giant minion, he could "ride" on its shoulders.

Of course they can, but I would go with ponies and smaller horses for convieniences because of thier size in relation to the horse ;)
Dude, no! A dwarf's weight would break that poor pony :( Their max load is like 225, and the average (nude) dwarf male weighs over 180 (but possibly over 200). Count in some armor and/or equipment and pretty soon that poor thing can barely move.
As awkward as it is they need to ride a horse for that reason. If you could find an especially strong medium creature maybe, but most likely just use a horse.| KaeYoss |
No. Absolutely not. There are things horses just won't do!
;-)
Seriously: Sure they can. They're medium. And even a halfling could ride a horse. You see humans riding elephants, after all. The mounting/dismounting thing might be a problem, but the enterprising dwarf will have a stepladder, just like Casanunder.
There might be a racial distrust of heights and big critters like horses, but I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

1) Attila the Hun was reputedly a dwarf. Rumor has it that he was a fair horseman.
2) A 'little people' I know rides regularly, her family has a big (!) farm and she pulls herding duty when she's home. She can only mount at certain places, but she grooms the horse and all the rest by herself. Once she's mounted, she's a far better rider than I'll ever be.
3) Sovereign Stone rules for D20 had the Dwarves as a mounted people.

If a dwarven pony has the Advanced template, he should be able to carry a typical dwarf and reasonable amount of gear at just about the break-point between medium and heavy load (STR 17 Medium quadruped, Medium load = 130-259 lb.). It works even better if the breed also gets an equivalent of dwarves' encumbered movement.

Yes, of course a house-ruled uber-pony would work. Though I do like the idea of 'stubby horse' type mount...
