But what is the Effective Character Level of an Imp?
Pathfinder doesn't use Effective Character Level, and for whatever reason WotC didn't find them viable as a Level Adjustable race, so they have no official ECL.
You're on your own on this one.
(For my own part, I believe I statted an Imp as ECL 4th back in a 3.5 Planescape game, but that was also a gestalt game. So perhaps ECL 5 or 6 is more appropriate.)

I stopped using ECL a long time ago, so now I just go with my gut:
An imp's got 3HD by default with a few nice abilities and racial perks, but a CR of 2. I'd assume an ECL of 4; perhaps advancing it with Sorcerer levels? You could drop its HD along with its 1/day, 1/week abilities and build it up to level 6 (Leader's character level -1) with Sorcerer levels.
Whatever balances the game.

Ok I just found out that an Imp has the same CR than a Worg, so I'll just pretend that they work in the same way for the purpose of leadership.
A little Sorcerer Imp that casts magic missiles from my shoulder? Sounds good to me!
Many thanks for the help! :D
Of course, as a Chelaxian Wizard/Diabolist Noble Scion of House Thrune you also have an imp familiar, imp servitor and imp companion to join your imp cohort on your shoulders. You are a Chelaxian Wizard/Diabolist Noble Scion of House Thrune?!

Nope, sorry, never heard of Chelaxian here on Toril. But I did bought the Basterds of Erebus AP and I'm waiting for a kind soul to run the module for me, because I'm already GMing both a home-made campaing and the Night Below module (although we only play Night Below once a year). :)

So I know this is a pretty old thread, but I’ve been thinking about this same idea and haven’t seen anyone else asking about it.
I think it stands that the base Imp should probably be considered 6th level because their Spell Like Abilities are treated as a 6th level caster. As the Imp levels up does that effective caster level go up too? Does it make a difference if the Imp takes levels in a caster class vs non-caster class?
Also, I wanted to hear if anyone had any thoughts on the Imp’s Bloodline powers if they did take an Imp cohort. They are already immune to fire and poison so if you take the Infernal Bloodline the second Bloodline power (for 3rd/9th level) is a waste. I might pitch to the DM the idea of substituting SR at level 3 and then increasing it 9th. Esp since more powerful devils have SR. Thoughts?

Dretch is on the list and it's a CR 2 same as an imp. One is a small demon and the other is a small devil. They are equivalent enough that you could probably use the same rules.
That being said a drench is listed as being an effective level 6. It's my understanding that you could get a dretch (as it appears in the MM) in place of a 6th level cohort. If you're supposed to have a 7th level cohort then you could have a dretch with one level in a class, etc.
Your Imp would be able to use it's innate abilities as per it's total HD. However, if say it took levels in sorcerer it's caster level for sorcerer spells would be equal to it's levels in sorcerer same as a PC. The fact that is has a bunch of HD and extra abilities based on those HD has no bearing when it goes to cast a sorcerer spell.
To put it another way, if I have a 10th level wizard and I take a level in cleric. I don't get to add my wizard levels to my cleric levels to figure out what level I cast my cleric spells at. I get my cleric levels only to determine my caster level for my cleric spells.

Thanks again Kailas! I had a feeling the imp should be considered 6th level as a base.
My question for the caster level wasn't actually about the any class levels. I was actually curious about the spell like abilities an imp can cast. Those are CL 6. I was curious if anyone thought that as the imp gains class levels if the CL for those spell like abilities should go up as is the case with Gnomish Magic. I think it would really only apply to Suggestion since Commune is already at CL 12 and the other half of the spells are constant/at will.
Also, any thoughts on the Bloodline power?

Monster "levels" and class levels just don't play well together. One pretty much never advances the other. The gnome doesn't have monster levels, so it's a very different thing.
Now, if your DM had the time and desire, they could look at advancing your cohort as a monster, which could increase its monster powers. But that'd be up to the DM. Or maybe you could try advancing it yourself, and letting the DM ok what you come up with, but many DMs aren't very familiar with those rules.
