Something I Just Thought Of

Round 3: Revised Magus Discussion

I was writing up some NPCs for my AoW campaign, and noticed something with the magus. I have a sixth level magus, with pool strike. Using Spellstrike and Spell Combat, he can cast shocking grasp and make an attack at -2, while spending an arcane pool point, to do weapon damage plus 8d6 electric damage. Am I running this right, or did I miss something? I don't think it's game breaking, as it uses up some resources, and chances are an NPC is only going to get it off once or twice. It just struck me as pretty intense and I wanted some other eyes on it before I zap the hell out of one of my PCs.

At 6th level his Pool Strike does 3d6 damage, but it takes a Standard Action to activate (not an 'attack') so can't be used in the Full Round Action of Spell Combat. In theory he could charge both the Shocking Grasp and Pool Strike up beforehand, but it's debatable whether a Magus can hold a Pool Strike and a spell charge at the same time (which probably needs clarification).

You forgot to charge the weapon before combat with a bonus and abilities.

If I'm reading this correctly you can at 5th level add +2 to the weapon as either a +2 or Shocking burst or Keen if the weapon is already magical up to +10 bonus. Then yes you could use spell combat + pool strike to shocking grasp them for 8d6 electrical damage or 9d6 with a x2 crit or a possible crit range of 16-20. You could also instead give yourself a bonus = to your int to your hit in order to increase the chance of hitting combining it with power attack.

After reading the rules on holding a charge I don't think what I came up with won't work. I guess technically the wording doesn't say pool strike isn't a held spell, but I think it sais everything but. When I DM it's not going to work.
