All target words in the pdf for area effects are of the burst type, which does not go through cover.
Typically, however, area spells are of the spread type. Fireball and Meteor Swarm, the evocation iconics of AoE, are spreads. All fog spells are also spreads.
Is there a spread type of target word? If not, will there be any? And emanations?

True, but he also stated that spreads were always non-instantaneous.

Not really true. Emanations are Bursts which last more then one turn. Spreads are a burst/emanation that can go around corners. :P

Ah, true, dunno why they bothered naming emanations then. The problem remains though... Current words of power setup only use bursts.

Differences between Spread, Burst and Emanations
Burst - Expands from a fixed source point. Extends out a given radius, but won't bend round corners. Typically an instantaneous effect; there is no effect entering the radius after casting.
Spread - Expands from a fixed source point. Treat the radius like a piece of string of the same length starting at the source point. This means it will bend around corners (multiple times if neccessary)
Emmanations - Expands from a source point (note this is NOT a fixed point, it can be mobile. For example, if cast on a pc, the emanation source point will move with the pc). Extends out a given radius, but won't bend round corners. Typically a non-instant effect, if you enter the are of effect before the duration has expired, you are affected.
